So it sounds like they got exactly what they wanted on their estate, then, and it's only really an issue for people who live nearby who'd have preferred something more exciting or "nice" in their more expensive neighbouring area.

So we voted to leave Europe, on part because the masses rejected our faith in the free market and the inequalities that this led to.

Yet pubs, many of which we should value as community assets and should have some sort of protection, are run to maximise profit beit turning into trendy restaurants or selling off/knocking down as they are more valuable for other uses.

Scores of successful or what could be successful beautiful pubs have been ruined across London - those on the Dulwich Estate, the Dulwich Woodhouse, many lovely pubs in the Youngs Estate.

This is not defending pubs where there simply isn't enough demand. Although it is a shame where you have development of warehouse style or duplex, developments such as the Oval Quatier or more down market lower Sydenham that there will be no demand for treasured pubs yet a Pret, Costa or McDs will be packed.

Good to see that Antic are bucking the trend in the Elephant probably recognising that with the large developments coming on line and some good brand awareness it can work.

Back to my whinge - the Dog was a popular pub. Why not leave it that way?

Hear bloody hear! ?When you have lost your inns, drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England.? I cannot imagine moving into any area where there wasn't a decent proper local within striking distance.

Hi everyone, I live on the Dulwich estate and received the following letter yesterday:

NOTICE FROM THE FEUDAL LORDS OF DULWICH PARISH TO LEASEHOLDERS AND PEASANTS OF SURROUNDING SHIRE:

His esteemed Lordship Chief Trustee of the Dulwichshire Estates hereby proclaims that the threat of subversive merriment in central village has been quashed. Having repelled the onset of progressive, creative modernisation and associated pestilence, the trustees of the estate are pleased to announce the reopening of the Greyhound hostelry to villagers and share croppers. The new controlled space has been wiped of its heritage charm and replaced with a pleasing New England yacht club theme. Taking our inspiration from the much lauded refurbishment of the Clockhouse the new public house resembles a modern day Bernie Inn that we trust should keep civility in check. Villagers may use said facilities for modest enjoyment from Nov 7th. The speedy bar service and reheated M&B food were a firm favourite and shall remain.

A damn well patronising letter. The Dulwich Estate referring to people as peasants? The pub has been given a generic New England yacht club makeover? I for one am fuming at this most horrendous act of hostelry vandalism if true. If I had received this letter I would have driven to their office and demanded an immediate meeting with whoever wrote it and a thorough explanation for their contemptuous lauding of self importance.

Louisa.

I think the letter was a 'tongue in cheek' spoof for the net...

Ah good, a proper Midlands brewery - Mitchells and Butlers. Brew XI and a decent pint of mild. Memories of 1970s adverts with blokes with sideburns, ladies with long hair, smoky background and tankards of beer. http://www.priory-antiques.co.uk/images/uploads/EMBASSY_M_AND_D.jpg http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3851096

I am glad something good has come out of Brexit.

excellent :)

Latest from the Dulwich Society website below.... The Dulwich Estate really are a shambles.

Good and bad news re pubs

It has now been confirmed that the Crown and Greyhound will not re-open until mid-January. While the front ?pub? building is complete there have been further delays on the ?hotel? block at the rear. The Dulwich Estate has not been able to reach agreement with Mitchells and Butler over a partial handover. The good news is that, on the Half Moon, Fullers have now completed the lease and preliminary enabling work should begin on Monday 12 September.

News just in. Dulwich Estates in their infinite uselessness have now put the reopening date of The Dog back to Monday, January 16th.

In other news work has started on The Half Moon, which should take four months to complete so should reopen sometime in February.

    • She also suggested that the 2017 Manchester terror attack (perpetrated by an Islamist extremist) was due to "divisiveness" and tried to pin the blame on the far right. Grim, really.
    • Thankfully, it seems that yesterday's "Red vs Blue" school wars thing has turned out to be a hoax/ nonsense/ whatever. (See link below if you managed to avoid this stuff). In years to come, we might found out who - or which countries - has an interest in testing what happens when you post socially disruptive content online about fake events... In the meantime, thank you to our local teachers and other school workers, police community support officers and police officers. My commute happens to take me past a bunch of schools at dropoff/pickup times, and I noticed a much greater and more visible presence on streets outside/near schools than normal. Annoying as it must have been to be distracted from other important duties, I really value and appreciate them looking out for the kids. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/school-wars-trend-red-blue-london-police-latest-142328025.html https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/jan/01/birmingham-new-year-fireworks-display-centenary-square-police

    • a) Because they published a leaflet in Urdu promising to give "Muslims a strong voice". This is reprehensible - just as a party that promised to give Protestants or Jews or Buddhists alone "a strong voice" would be acting in a sectarian manner. Parties - especially socialist ones like the English & Welsh Greens are now - should not be assymetrically promoting the interests of one religious group. b) Because they published a video in Urdu and Bangla criticising Kier Starmer for meeting Narendra Modi, when Modi has nothing to do with the issues discussed. Modi is a Hindu nationalist bigot - but in this context, the Greens are just shitstirring existing tensions between British Hindus and British Muslims for the purpose of trying to win Muslim votes - see the first point. FWIW I don't have any problem with parties communicating with the electorate in languages other than English (from Irish to Polish to Malayalam). What is very suspicious is when parties pump out sectarian messages only in one language... When Mamdani ran for Mayor of NYC (and won) he released plenty of campaign videos in multiple languages - but always with English subtitles too. There was never a suggestion he was sending different, sectarian messages to different groups.     https://uk.news.yahoo.com/why-greens-made-advert-urdu-164616073.html https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/uk/uk-green-party-accused-of-sectarianism-after-releasing-videos-in-urdu-and-bangla-featuring-pm-modi-and-gaza/articleshow/128826689.cms
