Normally Mr Lwl and I avoid such PDAs like the plague, but this year, the grandparents are down and have offered to babysit and it would seem churlish to refuse!

Anyone heard of any special menus that aren't too 'cheesy' (not in the food sense) - or even better, any places that are sticking to their normal menu, and won't be packed shoulder to shoulder with tables for two, with rose sellers popping through the door every 5 minutes?

Blimey - this does sound a bit 'bah-humbug'. Its not meant to be, I'm looking forward to a night out, but not one that's too OTT on the valentines schmulzh.

Any thoughts?

ladywotlunches, I think restaurants are to be avoided on the big V. Do something else instead - theatre, clubbing, dancing, getting off your face on cheap booze at the bus stop. Anything different really, perhaps something you used to do together when younger, or don't get the chance to now.

Perhaps going to a church and lighting a candle each for all the lonely people.

Then leaving the church together, one turning left and one right.

You both go approximately 100 yards round different sides of the church.

Within a prearranged minute, you go back and light a candle to only the lonely.

As you leave your partner is on the steps, he sweeps you into his arms and you both tell each you why it is you love each other and kiss.

After that, pretty much anything mentioned above, or indeed to come below is fine.

How about 'meeting' in a bar and chatting each other up?

Actually, come to think of it that is the height of cheese. But a could be a nice reminder of why you fell for ChapWotLunches in the first place.

Edited to say - obviously an ED bar. In ED. Or near ED. Anyway, a local thing. :-$

Had lunch at the rye today (I needed to get out) and Di (the owner) told me that their sister pub (The Bridge in Penge) is doing a

"Dump a date, find a Mate" night - Basically you bring someone of the opposite sex to you (i.e. your date) and hopefully meet someone new that evening (the concept relies on even numbers of males and females arriving as couples)

Best Anti Valentines night I have heard about in years..... however it also sounds like a glorified penge version of wife swapping !!!

well CW1 - I feel despite popular opinion, there are more singles than couples in ED. So go out and do your best on Valentines night - most couples will be in the restaurants - so go for the pubs and even single people will be in romantic mood - what could be more romantic than meeting your girl/guy for the first time on Valentines night.

Perhaps the singletons might like to follow what I have come to think of as a tradition.

On the 14th Feb go to Somerfield, and look at all around you buying what you loftily consider to be somewhat incongruous and last minute items.

Make cogent and not at all snotty observations.

"Would he, ever be buying flowers apart from a relative's funeral"?

"Is it possible that she thinks that card is in any possible way anything other than an expression of depraved indifference"?

"That box of chocolates? Seriously pal, there are prisoners in solitary confinement who'll be having better sex than you tonight"

And so on.

I then buy my annual litre of Gordons gin. With of course some slimline tonic.

Get back and toast the lovers with large G&Ts until the pain and numbness levels balance out.

Then I put on the Valentines song, as I like to think of it.

#There's a club if you'd like to go

you could meet somebody who really loves you

so you go, and you stand on your own

and you leave on your own

and you go home, and you cry

and you want to die....#

And there's a thread elsewhere with people saying they're in love with me.

Christ only knows how the rest of you get on.

    • I never said I thought it was targeted or deliberate. There also has never been a “stand off” or confrontation, we’ve spoken to them in a friendly manner about it. Our experience is they don’t seem to care. That’s the frustrating thing for us, if someone politely raises a concern at least take a second to reflect. Treat others how you would want to be treated.  I don’t want them to lose their job, far from it. But considering it could cost me a days work to fix any damage, I’m within my right to try prevent it.
    • The SE22 Evri delivery family are lovely, and always say hello wherever we spot them in the area. We gave them a box of chocolates during Covid as they were working their socks off at Christmas
    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
