I wouldn't say I was a fan. I have a few of his records. The Jam were very much of their time but he wrote some 'classic' material with them at a very young age. I didn't like the Style Council at all and his solo stuff is hit and miss. I can take him or leave him but you've got to admire his longevity in the music business. If he's getting accolades and awards now it's probably because he's been around so long.

Though I've never been over keen on his singing voice. He's a fine musician without being spectacular or show offy and a good songwriter who's learnt his craft over the 40 years he's been working. He's written some great songs and some not so good too. His shows still sell out and he still shifts plenty of units. I suppose you could say he's a bit of a geezer but saying he's a icon is a bit of a stretch and I hate all that Modfather bollocks.

The Jam were massive for teenagers in the punk/post punk period although slighty sneered at by the older in the punk generation, personally, I liked them but not as much as some people who where (and some still are, fanatics); I have several mates who say that the Jam are the best band ever!

P{ost the Jam, all pretty shite - his blue eyed soul style council stuff utter shite; and his 'ive discovered Neal Young' rockier stuff OKish, nut overared.

As a person, apparently a humourless arseh*le and it comes over in interviews too.

But, the Jam stuff deserves recognition, they were massive (UK only 1978-81(?))

Jam were ace, I missed them as I grew up as I was too in to punk and new wave - but when I got into them retrospectively, after they'd split I thought they were red-hot. Was gutted to have not been 'on it' at the time.

Fantastic songs, well delivered, great poetry IMO.

Style Council - maybe one or two songs.

Solo - not bovered.

Met him once in an art gallery. Humourless arsehole sums him up nicely.

Quite like the Jam. Not so keen on SC. Quite like the Wild Wood solo album.

Was never a fan of the Jam, despite many mates at the time being well into them

Unusually, but not uniquely, I quite like a lot of the Style Council stuff

Solo ? Liked the Uh Huh Oh Yeah single early on and then loathed pretty much everything bar his most recent albums which are at least interesting

Never liked him in interviews ? he appears to have softened ever so slightly of late and realised how uptight he has always been. But it?s only marginal

As for all the other men being named as self-satisifed on the thread:

a) Again?

b) Why do it in this thread?

c) People you don?t like not same as self-satisfied and smug ? I would go farther and say many of those named are riddled with lack of security hence the need for public approval

Smug was applied to Jools not PW. I happen to like the way the Mod God carries himself. He might be surly but he doesn't suffer fools nor is he in rampant ego territory...he's just a bit frosty.

It's cool to say you like the Jam. Saying you like Style Council is not cool. But part of the reason for starting this thread was pre-Dulwich Hamlet FC reappraisal. Some of the SC stuff is great and has aged really well.

My other half had some music biz dealings with him and his father back in the 80s. The whole family were humourless arseh*les apparently.

    • He lived in my road, so I bumped into him quite often, but I knew him as Mick, not Mike. We originally met at the opening of The Actress. Crikey, how long ago that seems now. He had a fox in his window 🤣 Not a real one, obviously. I only found out that he had died because I hadn't seen him around for a while,  so I mentioned it  on our road WhatsApp group, and someone on there told me. He had been ill for some time, but he was just in the middle of what must have been extremely expensive private  dental treatment (a lot of implants) so I assume his death was sadly unexpected.
    • Not in the same position but are you able to access the physical meter to take your own readings ? You could do this as frequently as you wanted to. I think TW are rolling out smart meters that don’t need to be physically read by them, and perhaps that’s what you have. I think that TW will only change your monthly direct debit once every 6 months, when you get the official statement.
    • Has anyone else had a water meter fitted in the last couple of years but is not being billed on the actual consumption as measured by the meter. I ask because after our meter was fitted 18 months ago, we could see the actual meter readings on our online account. This was helpful in terms of monitoring the consumption down to a day to day basis. However after about 6 months, the meter readings were no longer published online. I recall earlier advice from TW that  we would have a 12 month "trial" period after which we could opt to switch to metered consumption or stay on the rate based on the rateable value of our house.  As there's only two of us in the house, I reckon our actual consumption is well below the RV based consumption rate so with a bit of cynicism I reckon TW has deliberately discontinued publishing the meter reading.  Had the readings continued to be published, then we could have made an informed decision on whether or not to move to metered billing. Is anyone else in a similar position?
    • DR Yes he had not been very well for about the last 2 or 3 years but was making some progress, we use to see him down LL getting his shopping and stop and catch up on all matters Ed. I Pm'd just before Christmas and received no reply which was not like him so I did have concerns about his health but I had no other means of contacting him. R.i.P Foxy Bob S
