SeanMacGabhann
So tonight on BBC2 you have more Stewart Lee followed by episode 1, series 1 of the WireIf you haven't seen them I recommend them wholeheartedlyYou will probably be non-plussed by episode one of the wire, but give it until Thursday or Friday and things will start to click into placeWorth the license fee alone I reckon Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5805-tv-reminder-monday-30th-march/ Share on other sites

Cassius
I was tempted by The Wire, but 5 nights a week for a couple of months or so is a bit of an investment to make. citizenED
I think PVP is like refined version a CD-R or a DVD or a second generation VCR or module-phased PS2 and by Christ whichever way it is all an acronymised hellhole to me. Moos
Any platinum-plated recommendation is in danger of being a disappointment. But I hope The Wire makes some new friends, though - need some more junkies to discuss it with. bignumber5
So, the Stewart Lee thing...Smug, knowing, obvious and not awfully funny. Is this some sort of cleverpostmodernironictypefing that shot over my head?Sorry SMG, but I feel our taste in stand-up now parts ways...(but bugger, didn't realise it was ep1ser1 of The Wire: have never seen this show and since you all bang on about it, I thought I should start at the beginning. ah well, i'm sure freeviewBBC9 will oblige at some point ;-)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5805-tv-reminder-monday-30th-march/#findComment-186789 Share on other sites
jaybee82
I did let out a chuckle when he described Kofi Annan's breakfast. Not sure why...Coffee. And a Naan. Moos
I recorded it, BN5, it's all yours. And I haven't over-written it with the latest episode of The Unit either (whatever that is). bignumber5
Touche moos. Many thanks. Actually, have deliberately held off getting into yet another addictive American legal type show as I'm distractable enough as it is and I ned to get a bit of work done at some point! (note increased posting rate of late as representation of how much reading I should be doing ;-))(The Unit is a 99% crap, proper guilty pleasure but strangely addictive; what's not to love about a show where the special forces wear jeans when everyone else is in full combat gear, kill some damn enemies of the US of A, then go home to their lovely wives, with whom we have enjoyed scandalous subplot activity?) Moos
Sounds fab, are they all remarkably attractive, too? Or is it the one with the shaven-headed, bull-necked guy? mockney piers
Aaagh, can't stand The Unit and was not surprised to find it's written by David "why use one word when 5000 words of sub-even-tarantino-quality fare will do" Mamet.Yet, somehow, I watch it far too often, I think I like winding myself up. As you say, guilty pleasure. A bit like Star Trek in that respect, it's sh!t....but... SeanMacGabhann
Re: Stewart LeeThe case against: Those sketches. Not only are they piss-poor but they deflate whatever momentum was building on the stand-up front. The show itself is fine but not a great example of his workAnd I too disliked him when I first saw him. Everything else however, I love. I wouldn't call it post-modern or ironic but it is very stylised. Jeremy
So who caught Despatches?I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but this programme was unashamedly biased. Especially the stuff about getting the journalist beaten up, which never actually happened. Moos
I saw about 5 minutes, and switched it off. Am not a great fan of Boris but it was such a coarse hatchet job that it was of no interest. Ted Max
It was a dreadful programme and I'm amazed C4 didn't spike it. Bias or polemic are OK if there's some substance but this programme didn't lay a finger on him, or even get close. Pathetic effort.
