I learnt some interesting history about this shop recently. Apparently it used to be a 'gown' shop - run by a lady tailor. It made me think of the historical photos of East Dulwich which are displayed on Northcross Road - and the mix of shops that would have been seen along Lordship Lane in the early twentieth century. I wonder what sort of gowns sold best?

I know you were being funny by winding people up. Its like my mom who used to tease my very vain grandfather he needed a cane just to watch him explode in indignation :)

Maybe you will get your Space NK

I'm having a quiet day today so - fair questions - would it be a worthwhile exercise to drive to Penge to try to save 51p on butter?

Let's ignore the obvious environmental issues and stick to some easily calculable facts to objectively assess this (it was after all the price of the butter that was relied upon as the reason for driving to Lidl in Penge). To be fair it was never suggested that was good time management, or environmentally responsible.

Assume the journey is made in a new, very economical small car that does a good urban 80 mpg/17.6 miles per litre

Assume also that the drive was only 4.1 miles each way (the shortest route) to High Street Penge from (say) The Actress pub in Northcross Road - that's 8.2 miles round trip.

Assume a good deal on unleaded petrol to put in the small economy car - ?1.09.9 per litre (cheapest supermarket price today).

Assume no wear and tear, no parking charges, no allocation of the fixed costs of owning the car - no other costs at all.

Based on those most generous of assumptions, the trip of at least 38 minutes driving time to get the 'cheaper' butter (in order to 'save' 51p) cost no less than 51.2p. In reality it probably cost significantly more.

I suppose on this occasion at least the multi-national oil company and the petrol retailing chain benefitted from the price of the M&S butter!

Does look nice and a great improvement to the eyesore that was there for so long.

That little stretch of L.L. seems to be being generally developed and improved.

Just need to sort out the pavements further down L.L. opposite the Co-op

Obviously I hadn't read the sign as I was too busy driving, otherwise I'd have known, wouldn't I?

    • We had lunch here today. It was really good. I had a salad bowl with falafels. You don't have to have chilli and garlic - they ask you when you order. It was a really generous portion, all very fresh, and the excellent salad  came with three very  large and tasty falafels, two stuffed vine leaves, hummus and tahini. Excellent value. I can't remember exactly how much it was, but around £6 to £7. My partner had a wrap, which he said was good too, and a freshly squeezed juice. We ate in, but I took half of mine home to eat later. There were people in front of us, but we didn't have to wait long. They have a loyalty card - free drink the third time you go, free side the sixth time and a free wrap or bowl the tenth time. Highly recommended!
    • No need to wait until next year. They always run a post event feedback meeting. And yes, they were using some new contractors this year because the previous ones were not good enough by their own admission.
    • Sorry for dragging this back on topic, but earlier I had a discussion with Luca the site manager who was also singing the praises of the 'new' waste management team. He invited me on to the ground to the east of the 'parkrun start' path to check out how well they'd done. Within 20 paces I'd picked up (and given to him) 2 cellophane filter tip wrappers, 3 fag butts, a 2" screw, assorted scraps of plastic wrappers....! He awkwardly then said they were still onsite, and sent 1 guy out to litter pick. He also made the statement that it's "an impossible task". I will be over there tomorrow to find, collect and document all the remaining litter, to assist with next year's consultation. I think it's important to pass on that type of information?
    • Hi My friend who’s a local tree surgeon unfortunately had his small Stihl petrol chainsaw stolen last week. As a tree surgeon, this is pretty gutting.    I wondered whether anyone on here might have a spare secondhand one that they don’t use anymore. Or perhaps one that’s been left in a shed or garage gathering dust that isn’t needed. Joe would be delighted and very grateful if we could magic him a replacement soon! 🤩 Thanks so much!  Claire (07946) 728879
