David Beckham - The most over rated of men

What on earth has David Beckham done to achieve his reputation and standing.

Neither as a footballer or a man can I see any reason for the high status and respect he is given.

There is a Times article today "The Mythical Beckham". I've not read it but I was thinking along these lines recently. It confuses me. Hats off to the guy but I can't see that he justifies any of this.

I have to agree I don't see the fascination, yes he is a good footballer but so are many others and he defiantly does not deserve a knighthood which was suggested sometime back I think he is the better half of the Beckhams than his trout pout wife.

At the peak of his ManU/England career Becks as he is affectionately know was the best dead ball player in the world.

His crossing and set piece play was almost faultless, he never had pace though but he had the right attitude and probably will go down in history as one of the greats.

Not a ManU/Becks fan but you can't deny he had class.

hardly the basis for the making of an icon but yes he was a decent player

It isn't the basis anyone could create or bestow icon status, he did not give this label to himself. A celebrity footballer living the fairytail life.

There are a load of people ready to promote their heros to ridiculous highs. He's obvously had a lot of help and support via the media machine, the fact ManU turn their players into complete products has an obvious advantage through things like Gillette adds etc. I can't imagine Teves on an advert for aftershave can you?

I see his Icon status (although I don't think he is qute ready for that title) as being a by product of what celebrity is today in Britain.

He is a very likeable man though and does not appear to be a complete selfish git unlike say Jordan or any other host of uber famous people you could point the finger at.

I agree, but its gorgous Dave. That was just an example of the "Brand" known as David Beckham he's a household name.

"He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right." George Best.

I think George got it right about Beckham as player. He isn't fit enough to lace Bestie's boots but then no one is. Beckham though has made the most of himself by playing the media at their own game and at that he's been very successful financially by turning himself into a brand. He's won few football medals too, which helps.

I'm with Sedgewick, I do think he was class at his peak.

With regards to his being "an icon", George Best is also described as such, and why should he be, but Becks not?

For the record, I'm not saying that either of them should be, but if one is, then why not the other?

I don't get all this wanting to extend his England career bit now which was preceded by his wanting to bring football to America bit. He is abusing the yanks and should be told so.

Arry is an idiot if he takes him on board for two months. He may just as well invite the circus to set up on the WHL pitch.

Besides given it was only weeks ago that DB said he would never play for anyone in England again because of his links to Man U, one can only guess that he has changed his tune due to there not being any interest in having him briefly from a suitably important European club.

I'm not sure he has as much respect as you suggest Mick. Now if he joined Blackburn he would go up in my estimation.

I suspect that is exactly what he wants. Sell a few shirts with Beckham's name on the back, lift the "brand" of Spurs around the world.

Blackburn it seems have guaranteed him game time too, which is what he wants. Isn't it?

DB: What do you think of this strip luv?

VB: Nah, don't fink you look good in blue and white Dave.

DB: We'd be able to spend time in Lancashire luv and get free chicken nuggets for the kids. Av a look at their away kit.

VB(wakes up): Dave, Dave, I've just had a terrible nightmare.......

    • Hmmm, millions of animals are killed each year to eat in this country.  10,000 animals (maybe many more) reared to be eaten by exotic pets, dissected by students, experimented on by cosmetic and medical companies.  Why is this any different? Unless you have a vegan lifestyle most of us aren't in a position to judge.  I've not eaten meat for years, try not to buy leather and other animal products as much as possible but don't read every label, and have to live with the fact that for every female chick bred to (unaturally) lay eggs for me to eat, there will be male that is likely top be slaughtered, ditto for the cow/milk machines - again unnatural. I wasn't aware that there was this sort of market, but there must be a demand for it and doubt if it is breaking any sort of law. Happy to be proved wrong on anything and everything.
    • I don't know how spoillable food can be used as evidence in whatever imaginary CSI scenario you are imagining.  And yes, three times. One purchase was me, others were my partner. We don't check in with each other before buying meat. Twice we wrote it off as incidental. But now at three times it seems like a trend.   So the shop will be hearing from me. Though they won't ever see me again that's for sure.  I'd be happy to field any other questions you may have Sue. Your opinion really matters to me.
    • If you thought they were off, would it not have been a good idea to have kept them rather than throwing them away, as evidence for Environmental Health or whoever? Or indeed the shop? And do you mean this is the third time you have bought chicken from the same shop which has been off? Have you told the shop? Why did you buy it again if you have twice previously had chicken from there which was off? Have I misunderstood?
    • I found this post after we just had to throw away £14 of chicken thighs from Dugard in HH, and probably for the 3rd time. They were roasted thoroughly within an hour of purchase. But they came out of the oven smelling very woofy.  We couldn't take a single bite, they were clearly off. Pizza for dinner it is then. Very disappointing.
