there are many threads out there in this forum but no one is really like this one
annaj replied to Azul's topic in The Lounge
Excellent thread Azul, but where to start? There is so much to say about Bellenden Belle. Did you know she can tap dance? -
I propose a 1 month ban on posting about Green and Blue

What Keef said. (which is what Keef normally says about other peoples' posts ;-)) -
Hee hee. I know exactly what you mean MrBen, it always makes me smile to see the dramatic response of a sun-starved population to the first few days of warm weather. I spotted someone shopping on Lordship Lane in a bikini top, vest and hot pants - it's not THAT hot surely? And don't even get me started on sunburn.... Not that I'm immune to the excitement of the first summer days. I enthusiastically forced MrJ and friends to sit outside having drinks on Thursday long after it was too cold to do so and we'd all put fleeces on. For me the best bit is foot freedom. Flip-flops after a winter of too tight, uncomfortable proper shoes. Bliss! :))

Another great night - missing a few regulars, but lots of new faces - most of whom I didn't get round to meeting. Did manage to meet Mrs Brendan (Brendan, tell her from me she's fabulous and I'm still smiling at the idea of her woo-hooing out of her window, Bagpuss (our neighbour!), Hannah6_6, and Strawbs very briefly in the ladies - hopefully you and jaws are completely convince about moving to ED now. Lovely to see evreyone else again especially the ever lovely Bellenden Belle and Moos, although as always no time for a proper gossip. Oh and Keef, I know you did, I'm a bit nervous, but I'll do it....

Thanks Andrew, that was quick! No terrible pictures of me this time either. Have a lovely holiday.

Ooohh, that makes more sense. I thought you had suddenly decided to rename SeanMac Merlin! I think Mockney is right, people on here are pleased for DM, because she's well known and liked (both virtually and in reality by some although I've not had the pleasure)on the EDF and has been posting for a long time. I suspect there is also an element of a sense of shared glory, because she was posting here first, and satisfaction at feeling like we're in on the joke that some people won't get. I'm undecided. DM often makes me smile, but not always and I didn't think this was her strongest work. There is a huge difference between a blog and a newspaper column and only time will tell if DM is up to the challenge. For now I'll just join everyone else in saying congratulaions DM and good luck, I hope this is a sucess for you.

Getting around as a musician in ED
annaj replied to KindredHyperion's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Shame on you MacGabhann! Encouraging underage drinking before running off to the continent. KindredHyperion (reference lost on me - sorry) I'd second the advice to try The Plough again, especially on an open mike night. I think the next one is next Friday, but keep an eye on the What's On section to be sure. I've only watched not taken part, but the open mike nights always seem to be really inclusive and friendly. Sean's right, come along to the Mag tonight - for a lemonade of course - and you could have a chat with Keef who does a great job of organising the Plough nights. -
Oh yes the South Bank, I forgot that. And the nice More London square near the Hilton with the clever water features and the champagne bar!

Sunday 11th May - ED festival fair - Goose Green - Free
annaj replied to Fuschia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'll be there with some friends from North London, so you'd better all behave yourselves! -
Now play fair people, read the opening post, this thread was meant to be about what Ken did well, not another Ken V's Boris debate. I'd like to second the congestion charge, Trafalgar Square, increased bus services AND bendy buses (I like them). His response to the July 7th bombs is also something I'll always remember. I'm not usually a fan of rousing speeches, but in July 2005 we had just come back from living in NZ, cutting short a year-long stay becuase we missed London and wanted to come home. As a Londoner and someone working in the emergency services (not very front line that day I have to admit. On stand-by feeling utterly impotent in and empty emergency department south of the river) I felt quite emotional about this attack on my home town and Ken's response was exactly right at the time.

They probably know that it's International Dawn Chorus Day... http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/index.php?section=places:events:dawnchorusday I'm on nights this weekend and went outside into the ambulance bay just after 4am and I have to say the dawn chorus was lovely. After a night tending to the injuries of bank holiday drinkers it was quite uplifting. I can appreciate it's annoying being woken on you day off, but there are far worse sounds to be woken by surely?

I'm sure you are Mamora Man, but in Southwark at least you're in a minority. 48% Ken 29% Boris in Southwark and Lambeth. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/elections/london/08/html/10.stm Small comfort for those of us who still believe Boris to be very bad news.

It wasn't me! Very depressed, but sadly not surprised.

*Bob* I've edited my original post; I said that the symbol was used by the nazi party without going on to say that it has subsequently been adopted by neo-nazi organisations. I realsie this was inacurate (a sloppy oversight, my apologies) and have changed it. I hope this avoids detention as I have dinner plans tonight. With that small correction, however, I stand by my original post. I am also not asking people to take to the streets in hysterical, reactionary response to a bit of badly drawn graffiti. I am simply saying that any evidence of possible neo-nazi activity or feeling most certainly warrants discussion.

I would say that Jah's ability to eclipse is inversely proportional to he number of drinks consumed!

Louisa, assuming your post wasn't a tasteless joke, let me answer your question. I think we all accept that the Nazis were not the first to use the swastika, as had been mentioned several times before your post, but there is also no doubt that in Europe, in recent history, it's major association is with the Nazi party and, since their demise, other neo-nazi organisations. The systematic killing of six millions people, because of their race, lifestyle or beliefs was a lot more than "political unrest" and to call it such belittles the suffering of millions. Painting swastikas on street furniture and shops may be a trivial act, it may be a dare, or a rebellion, but if there is even a chance that it is done with meaning or worse still intent, then we as a community have a duty not to ignore it. Elsewhere on this forum someone has quoted John Donne "no man is an island entire unto himself" We are all responsible and if we turn a blind eye to seemingly trivial acts of hatred and bury ourselves in our everyday concerns, we are all responsible if those acts become less trivial. That is why this topic not only warrants, but compels discussion. Edited to avoid detention with *Bob*

Another early voter here. I voted about ten past seven this morning and was surprised by how many people there were at that time. PGC I wasn't even asked for my address, just handed over my card. Did have to watch quite carefully to make sure she crossed me off and not Mr J, who has almost the same initials.

buggie, your post made me laugh out loud! I do exactly the same thing: "does it really hurt just there?" "Oowww yes" "Good" What I mean, of course, is oh good I know what's wrong with you and what to do. One word I definitely overuse is the dreadful healthcare worker's pop "pop on the couch" "pop your clothes off" "pop to x-ray" Ridiculous, but I can't help it.

david_carnell, at the risk of sounding like your mother, number 3 is so sweet.

Won't bother next time. *looks for emoticon of sulky face with sticking out bottom lip* *can't find one* *folds arms and turns back huffily*

Swindon is bad. Although, growing up in rural Gloucestershire a trip to the Swindon Oasis (swimming pool with slides Ooooo) was regarded as a spectacular treat. Almost as good as Club Tropicana (outdoor swimming pool with slides(which of course with a good Gloucestershire accent becomes Club Tropi-caaar-neerrrr)) in Weston-Super-Marein the summer!

I'm a bit like you Brendan, there are things I could regret, but ultimately the person I am today is a product of all my experiences so farin life. If I really think about it I can come up with two though: 1. Not telling my sister to go straight to her doctor when she showed me the big lump in her neck. 2. Boring career related one this - not taking the final part of the MRCP exam (post graduate specialist medcial exam). I didn't need it at the time and it hasn't made any difference to my career, but I worked really hadr for the first two parts and I think I'd feel better if I'd finished it.

Sean that's terrible news. Who's lovely girlfriend will I talk at now?

Remember this? All together now.... "Snooker loopy nuts are we Me and him and them and me. We'll show you what we can do With a load of balls and a snooker cue. Pot the red and screw back For the yellow, green, brown, blue Pink and black. Snooker loopy nuts are we We're all snooker loopy!" No? Just me then.
