  1. Wossy started out as a broadcaster who was willing to push boundaries, but hasn't got to where he is simply by being controversial, for quite while he's gone up the ranks via his more mainstream material with just an added but ersatz veneer of edginess. He's an intelligent, witty and affable chap though and good at what he does. I'm really not a fan of his 'flagship' show, it seems to be horribly luvvy and despite appearances of being rude and risque is actually horribly fawning, and utterly standard chat show fare once it's stripped down to its components. But he's every bit as good as Barry Norman on Film xx, he introduced me to so much through the incredibly strange film show and actually seems a pretty decent chap all told. The problem comes when anyone gets the sort of ludicrous contract he was offered by the Beeb. Ones own self worth hits hyperinflation, and people can be tempted to believe the hype, that the rules no longer apply. I think an element of this has happened to Ross and since Hollywood to Brand. They're friends and their dinner party humour ended up being recorded and broadcast. It was not so much in bad taste, that's pretty much a trade mark for both of them in their careers, it was that they blurred the divide between medialand and reality and that generally they really shouldn't actually meet, and that's what happens when you yourself get out of touch with reality. The fact that it wasn't particularly funny just adds to the woes, but I'm inclined to agree that far worse, far more 'shocking' occurs in print and broadcast media pretty much daily, and that this is a classic case of the hypocritical press getting their teeth into something. Whether to sell papers or not I don't know, I'm never convinced sales fluctuate that much according to the story of the day, I think they just love taking people down. So end of the day, poor effort on show noone listened to has suddenly equated questions in parliament and national witch hunt. I'd have thought with an American Presidential election in 4 days time the silly season might be over, I KNOOOW we're all sick to death of hearing the end of the world is nigh, but really, haven't 40,000 people got something better to do with their time? I hear that Jerry Springer the Opera is well worth a watch.
  2. Just who is RB's target audience anyway? I would have thought it was more the likes of Glau's daughter above, hijacking mum or pop's account ;), but radio 2 is more traditionally associated with an older audience, just finding the positive qualities in cords and slippers. For the record I like his football column, but then he is an iron....so to speak.
  3. "CoD 4. Fantastic multiplayer" I'm sure it is, but I find the whole experience of being killed every 6 seconds by puerile american kids telling me I'm gay, somewhat of a spirit crushing one ::o
  4. He is a pretty special guy isn't he, careful, once you pop.... I do love a good RPG (currently on Fable II and DragonQuest IV) but they do eat up time (witness Championship manager chap in Observer sport who was amazed at the 100 hours he'd put into the game, mere childsplay compared to the several weeks of online time I put into WoW*) and consequently I have to be an occasional player of them. *Not proud, appalled believe me, appalled.
  5. I'm very excited about CoD 5 too, CoD4 was just spot on, and using that engine to bring it back to WW2, great stuff. You must watch the Zero Punctuation review of Assassin's Creed, he acknowledges the quality of the visuals, but does rechristen it Faffing About Creed.
  6. "the horror the horror" I'd hazard that's a Joseph Conrad reference, but maybe I'm being all elitist and holier than thou....Monkey dust it is ;-) ps love Monkey Dust pps couldn't give a flying monkey's arse about this so called controversy, but I too am curious as to who these people are who are so mysteriously offended by the youtube clips of the incident they eagerly hunted down. I bet they felt deep and personal grief when their best friend Lady Di errr died.
  7. what a coincidence! http://tech.uk.msn.com/gaming/gallery.aspx?cp-documentid=6532179&imageindex=1
  8. I loved the atmosphere in Eternal Darkness, lovely and gothic and more than a bit Lovecraftian, but it never really scared me at all. First time you meet the flood was pretty scary in halo, though that very soon switched to tedium.
  9. D-Day landings on first Call of Duty on PC, before it became easified for the consoles, bloody hell, if anything reinforced that I'd last 5 seconds in a real war....
  10. Ha yes, that's daisy referring to his game playing. I love this bit too. Brian: Can I borrow a tea-bag? Tim: [sarcastically] Only if you bring it back. [pauses] You can HAVE a tea-bag, Brian, you can't borrow one. [turns around, sees Brian dressed as a painting] You've got paint on you. Brian: It's a literal tribute to the self reflexivity of Rembrandt. Tim: Did he like it? Brian: He's dead. Tim: Bloody hell, that really backfired. Brian: What are you playing? Tim: Tomb Raider 3. Brian: She's drowning. Tim: Yeah. Brian: Is that the point of the game? Tim: Depends what mood you're in really. Brian: What sort of mood are you in then? Tim: Well, I got a letter from my ex-girlfriend this morning, 3 months too late, explaining why she dumped me. It was full of 'you'll always be special' and 'I'll always love you' platitudes designed to make me feel better whilst simultaneously appeasing her deep seated sense of guilt for dumping me, running off with a slimy little city boy called Duane and destroying my faith in everything which is good and pure. Brian: So it didn't really work then. Tim: No, it made me wanna drown things!
  11. So what are the scariest games people have played? Some moments in the first res game quite literally made me jump and lose the controller, though I was a bit jaded by most of the ensuing reses. There was a level with the flickering lights and the teleportery type slaves in half-life where I recall being very nervous. Ravensholme in 2, eeek. First time T-Rex attacked in first tomb raider.....any more?
  12. I own that shop Sean, do I get the book for nowt? What about the buxom bookseller?
  13. As in doctor the verb, rather than the noun?
  14. I think I've an interview with Brooker, Graham Lineham and Simon Pegg discussing gaming in some magazine or other if that helps to keep you going, I could bring it to a forum drinky.
  15. I heard another series is soon to hit our screens
  16. Ooh David Dickinson as the Doctor with Dickie Bird as his sexy sidekick...now that's a dream team. Ozzy Osbourne?
  17. How about Dickie Bird?
  18. Anyone got Dead Space? I'm tempted....
  19. Haven't even managed to consumate my marriage let alone catch an std off one of the ladies of the night. Problem with being a good guy is that the less salubrious parts of town are now jolly nice thanks to my actions. Grrr. How does one going about persuading ones missus to get jiggy with it?
  20. Come join me at DEnmark Hill on the blackfriars train in the morning, hyou know you want to, I'll introduce you to Roy "elbows" johnson
  21. Ahh, the sweary mary obfuscator has obfuscated the hyperlink text too. substitute the sweary symbols for the c word.
  22. West Ham's annus horibilis, how bad will it get?
  23. I've been enjoying it a lot too, though it gets a little repetitive and I'm beginning to sense the main quest is short, and there are AI and control issues, but there are indeed so many nice touches, and loads of sidequests. Loving the pottymouthed scottish Gargoyles. That said, my financial empire is growing quite nicely thankyou (2 grand every five minutes...kerching!), and soon I shall own ALL ALBION!!!
  24. Sometimes you have to look back to appreciate just how little has changed. Every bit as appropriate today: cunt *warning, effing rude
  25. actually that'd be quite a cool doctor, might stop all these rubbish sub plots about everyone falling in love with the doctor.
