That's interesting, because I know someone who works in a shop on Lordship Lane, and she says that the customers come in and completely ignore her, hardly ever a "hello" or a smile, which she finds very dispiriting. ETA: I personally don't like over-friendly shop assistants, particularly in clothes shops, because it feels like I am being pushed into buying things. I'd rather they ignored me unless I approached them for help. Each to their own, eh?

Could this be why they are being so persistent, because the Goose That Lays The Golden Eggs is about to stop laying them? Obviously these companies are making a lot of money out of the government. Bit like all those pushy computer training firms that sprung up when there was government money available for them to run courses. -

You could point this out to your Landlord. xxxxx Good explanation of the issues here ETA: Mabel, I'm absolutely horrified by this. I used to work for Islington Council, and they were actively encouraging people not to pave their gardens. SUDS (see the link above) was taken very very seriously in the borough. If it turns out that the council has acted illegally, and it seems that at the moment nobody actually knows the reasoning behind what they have done, I think you should not just be compensated, but have at least the parts of the garden belonging to your landlady reinstated to how they were before. It's quite possible that the work was incorrectly done. My brother had a whole front wall demolished by council workmen who had gone to the wrong house. His house is not even a council property! The council obviously had to have his wall rebuilt, and pay for it. And yes, James Barber is very helpful but he may not be your councillor. But I'm sure he could point you in the direction of who to take this up with (grammar). He has a thread on this forum with his contact details. Good luck. xxxxxxx If it's housing association, then the tenants should have a clause in their contract which includes not behaving in an antisocial manner, or words to that effect. If you can find out which housing association it is, then you should definitely pursue it through them, and if you have no luck then go to the Chief Executive. My neighbours and I had problems a while back with tenants of a housing association flat who were giving us grief. It did take persistence and not taking no for an answer while the issue was passed back and forth to different people in the housing association, but in the end writing to the Chief Executive had the desired effect. -

Councils are having to really tighten their belts, so the only real reason I can think of to spend zillions of pounds on firework displays is to take people's minds off the public services they are no longer getting for their council tax :-S Anyway, both Crystal Palace and Brockwell Park have had excellent displays in the past, although I think Crystal Palace charges a small entry fee, so we're not exactly short of local-ish choice. -

And at home we always had a roast on Sunday, and things like mince or chops during the week. That continued up until I went to uni in 1967. It might be true that other families ate less meat, but we weren't at all well off and we seemed to eat loads of it. Bloody hell, I've lived through history :))

the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > James Barber managed to get it cancelled. xxxxxx I'm sure that can't be true? But hopefully it won't be that night, as we have a Goose gig to run, and I love fireworks. I heard that the fireworks are back at Brockwell Park this year, though - they were cancelled last year. Will see if I can find a link. -
peterstorm1985 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > When I was a child most households ate a fraction > of the meat that they do today xxxxxxx Really? Do you have evidence for that? When I was a child (in the fifties) we hardly ever had a meal without meat, and now I hardly ever have a meal WITH meat (I'm not a vegetarian) unless I'm eating out. There were very few options for meals without meat in those days - all I can remember is things like Cauliflower Cheese.

She told me the same as you. The council has a schedule and surely if one or two people in a street are reporting a missed collection, they should investigate to see if the whole street has been missed out - and make sure it doesn't happen again. Surely they are not sending a separate van out for each missed collection report?

If you don't want to keep the wheelie bin, you can continue to use the boxes. Some people appear to like all the plastic :-S, judging by some of the posts on This Thread!

DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Brown bin Food waste collected this morning... > > Fox.. xxxxxx So was mine, but it should have been collected yesterday. What is the point of having a schedule if they don't stick to it? And I ordered a smaller green bin on 21 September - exactly four weeks ago today - and there's no sign of that arriving, either, despite the council saying they would swap it for the existing one "as soon as they can". I know this recycling change was a big one, and some mistakes are to be expected whilst it's bedding in, but even so .... we are just the people who are posting about them on here. How many more must there be across the whole borough? Is anybody at the council monitoring the new scheme to make sure it's working as it should be?

Told them I didn't want it > done and closed the door. xxxxxxxx It's true that the recommended thickness has increased, but I'm sure it's not compulsory to increase it. And of course you'd have to clear the loft of boxes etc before they could lay additional insulation, how on earth could they lay it otherwise? I've only got part of my loft boarded, which I use for storage, and I didn't get the extra insulation laid there. I was told by The Energy Saving Trust who give impartial advice on things like this, that boxes of stuff in effect acts as insulation in any case - although it would have been possible to increase the amount of insulation in those areas by raising the floor, but I just couldn't face the hassle. -

I've just had the FOURTH person call at my door about this in a matter of a few days. Apparently they are from a company called S.I.G. Energy. As I have told them EACH TIME that I've already had my grant and had my loft insulated, you would think they might coordinate their records, no? Evidently not.
