I have to say that when I went in (evening), I thought the service was really down to earth. They were happy for us to look at the drinks menu before we sat down. A guy served us and told us to feel free to wander upstairs before we left to see the Moroccan area. We started talking to him and he was really friendly. While he was getting our order, another lady politely (and with a smile) enquired if we were being served. When we wandered upstairs, another waiter asked if he could help (again with a smile) and he was happy for us just to look around. I haven't been in during the day so I don't know what it likes then. I wouldn't pay ?11 for a sandwich though. Overall it was welcoming without the staff being overbearing. :))

Hungry Hippos sounds fun! I think I played it a couple of times when I was young :-S? Its funny but these games can get really competitive!

Thanks Muttley! I think I missed it as it got lounged but I've found it now. I think the tyre shop was part of the row of shops Parkhill bought up a year or so back. Sad to see the tyre place go as the guy has obviously been there a long time.

Sorry in advance if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I can't find anything on it. The tyre shop, next to Moxons and Cafe Noodle, has it closed? It looks like it has been gutted. It was up and running about 2 weeks ago, but now looks deserted. Anyone know anything?

Bizarre - was talking about The Littlest Hobo at the weekend. Hawaii Five-0 is my choice. For adverts, I love: 'I'm a secret lemonade drinker...R Whites, R Whites'

Went in for drinks this evening. They've obviously spent a fair amount on doing the place up and the interior looks very impressive. Comfy and relaxing chairs - I didn't want to get up! Upstairs was very mellow. Drinks were priced the same as a normal bar, so we will definitley go back. The cakes smelled heavenly so will also have to go back for elevenses. Good service and friendly staff. Good to see a place with an original theme.

Some ideas: - Hook up with local Residents Groups. Eg BARA (Barry Area Residents Association, covering Barry Road, Landells Rd, Darrell Rd, Hindmans Rd, some of Underhill Rd and a couple of other roads), the residents association covering the roads near the station (can't remember its name but it covers roads like Elsie Rd, Tintagel Crescent, Derwent Grove etc). Ask them to mention EDF to their members and in exchange you can put them on the forum under 'Local Info'. Groups like BARA don't have huge turnouts unless there is a hot topic that needs dealing with, but they do a mail-drop a couple of times a year to most of the houses they cover. - See if you can have a leaflet at the Dulwich Community Council meetings? - Put up a leaflet mentioning the EDF on church noticeboards. Ask them if they have any events they would like to put in the 'What's On' section. Churches seem to have a number of fundraisers during the year. Same with schools. - Someone mentioned the bag thing again. Being a girl, I think the reason the I (heart) SE22 bags were popular is because they were eyecatching (the heart and the lime green and pink thing was a good combo) and it was a catchy line. I didn't buy one though because they were pricey! - You could think of doing a promotion with the East Dulwich Society - they mention you if you mention them. The ED Society sends a newsletter about twice a year to all its members and they are active in local issues. - Have votes more often, e.g. 4 times a year. The winners seem to like it, Surma mentioned the forum a couple of times in its advert in one of the magazines (was it Living South?) Instead of/in addition to the little cup as an award, how about a sticker or framed winner's certicate they could put in their front window or at their front desk (something eye catching that their customers will notice - could do this for the winner and runner up in each vote) - You could get other businesses to put up an EDF sticker/small poster in exchange for e.g. two weeks advertising. Some shops on LL are quite obliging when it comes to putting something up in their window/front desk, eg Green & Blue, Moo Too, ED Deli. Anyway, this is just some ramblings from me! :))

Yep, we love Keef! :)) He must surely be the forumite who most uses ':)-D' - has anyone else noticed this?! Err...back on topic...a Vietnamese cafe would be nice.

I have a friend who lives in SE24 - Herne Hill, but insists on telling everyone she lives in Dulwich Village. It makes me cringe every time. Herne Hill doesn't need to call itself 'North Dulwich' or the'North Dulwich Triangle' (in estate agents speak). Herne Hill is lovely in its own right. I hear the Herne Hill Society is very proud of being Herne Hill and doesn't like people trying to call the area 'Dulwich'!! Naturally, I love ED the best! :)) Do they also all read the Guardian in West Dulwich? I sometimes feel a bit self-conscious in ED buying a copy of The Times...

Dawson Heights Property Exclusive
Ko replied to peckhamasbestos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I didn't like Dawson Heights when I first moved to the area, but now love it - its a facinating building, very unusual. When you see it as you come down Dog Kennel Hill on the bus, you know you're home :)) -

I was in a shop on Rye Lane about 2 months ago and a lady tried to snatch a handbag from a frail woman who must have been about 80 years old. The security guard was able to help out. I don't know how often this sort of thing happens though. I think the elderly need to be considered - we don't want them to be afraid to use their local shops. On a positive note, everyone was very helpful to the old woman, making sure she was alright and offering to walk her home.

I think the flats may be the ones at the junction with Tintagel Crescent. I think the flats are maybe for hospital workers.

Looks art deco in style?

After writing Chener, I remembered that thread where someone said there is always a bucket there to catch water from the leaking ceiling. I really didn't think about what could rhyme with bucket!!

ChavWivaLawDegree Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > One thing I noticed was that Marmite lovers seem > to like Marmalade and Peanut butter too. This thread is really weird because it seems there are other people out there like Mr Ko! He's a Vegemite lover rather than Marmite, but he also loves marmalade and peanut butter. CWALD - your line is so true. We emailed ma and pa-in-law last week to ask if they can bring over some Vegemite with them. They emailed back to say fine and they also offered to bring over Mr Ko's favourite brand of peanut butter!? He has also discovered Waitrose as one of the rare places that stock medium-sized jars of vegemite - most places only have the small jars and it is just about impossible to get the big jars here. Are you sure that you're not all marmite-vegemite-marmalade-waitrose-loving-peanut-butter-eating aliens?? I used to think Mr Ko was a little weird with all his jars, but it seems like there are others like him. He also likes ginger preserve, but one sniff of that was enough to put me off. What's in Gentleman's relish?

I searched through the Chener book racks But fell over the the famous bucket...

LuvPeckham - great the traders are doing something. I use the shops in Peckham every couple of weeks. Great to have an Argos and Woolies etc nearby and other useful shops. Ther are some small independent shops which are also good. Went into Woolies last Sunday and couldn't believe all the litter inside. It almost put me off but there was something I really needed so I still went in. Not sure if this was because they don't have cleaning staff at the weekend, because its usually quite tidy.

Good corner shops include the one on library end of Lordship Lane (on the corner with Landells Rd - also has a post office there) and the one on Barry Rd (at about the Upland Rd junction). Also Vals near the library. SMBs is always good. Moxons Fishmongers are always very helpful. As is William Rose Butchers. Turkish grocers is also good. Buy my birthday cards etc from Greetings (next to Somerfield). Plough DIY (by Dulwich Library) is very well-stocked and will always help you out with advice, even though they are always very busy - really nice they offer such a personal service. AJ Farmers has good kitchen accessories, cleaning stuff etc - always very helpful if you need to unblock a drain or get a stain out of something. Dulwich Garden Centre stocks all the gardening essentials so you don't have to go to B&Q. Today I did use Somerfield, but I also used the fishmongers, Macey's chemist, bought earrings at the Northcross Rd market, used Dulwich Library and used the post office at LL library end. Happy shopping!

So they got lost in the Village...

I was brought up outside London in a town where it was the norm to say thank you to the driver when getting off. I still see this happen in various towns and it is heartening to see the children doing this too. Within London, I am always surprised at how few people say thank you to the driver. Fair enough, getting off some buses these days does not involve passing the driver on your way out. On other buses like the P13 or if you get off at the front door of a bendy-bus, many people still do not say thank you. Even when you get on a bus and the driver checks your travelcard, I think you should say thanks for this because he is providing a service. Yes, some drivers do drive too fast when pulling out and they need to take more care to prevent accidents happening, especially to the passengers who have just got on - I'm sure it can be scary for many, including the elderly, those with children and the disabled. Today's incident sounds awful. I think that passengers should also be more polite to drivers too. Whenever I have had to ask a driver for advice about where to get off when I do not know where I am going, they are almost always lovely and call out my stop when we get there. I think that if they got shown a bit more appreciation, it would help them take more pride in their jobs. Although there is no excuse for the accident with the child today or the subsequent behaviour.
