  1. The post office on LL is pretty bad with its queues. I dread going there! Start using the Post office at the Plough - by the Lordship Lane / Crystal Palace Rd junction (near Dulwich Library). About a 10 minute walk from Iceland - albeit a little uphill, so the elderly may prefer to use their free bus pass to get there in 2 minutes on the bus! I've never waited more than 5 minutes and there is usually only a couple of people in the queue.

I think the council needs to look at other problems that have been encountered in the vicinity (eg re subsidence and damage to the foundations of other houses) and assess likelihood in this development - which will have an underground car park. Prevention is better than cure. Also, I think I read elsewhere on the forum that regarding Mr Banfield's wood yard on Barry Rd, houses are being built rather than flats because the council thought that there was a need for more houses rather than flats.
  3. I saw Mr Daly 2 weeks ago. Very very good - and doesn't rip you off.
  4. Go to www.catchat.org. The top tabs have advice sections plus there is an excellent forum where some very experienced cat owners give excellent advice. Re allergies - have sent you PM.
  5. Agree with Lorraine - I only had to wait 2 minutes in the queue this afternoon at the Plough Post Office (2 people in front of me). That's pretty much the usual waiting time! Much, much quicker than the main Post Office by Somerfield!

Privet (ligustrum) looks very smart but needs regular trimming in summer. Golden ligustrum only needs trimming twice a year as is a slower grower and has a variegated look. For a softer look, try laurel (evergreen glossy green leaves) or red robin (evergreen and lots of lovely red leaves in spring and early autumn),

    The Garden

Hi Brendan If you're having trouble getting something started in a shady area, grow it in a sunny area first and then move it. By that time the plant will be bigger and taller and have enough leaves to get sufficient light for photosynthesis. Plants often don't need direct sun as such, just enough 'light'. Plants always bend towards the sun so just stake the middle to keep it upright. You need a good groundcover planting to suppress the weeds and save your back. Look at things like vinca minor / vinca major (periwinkle), cotoneaster etc - should be okay in shade. Main thing if its a shady area is to get plants which are fully hardy - otherwise the damp in cold whether will kill off the plant. Most spring bulbs are ok in shade. Foxglove (digitalis) love shade and give a good show in early summer. Dwarf camellia will do well in shade (make sure its not east-facing as direct morning sun will damage flower buds). Just a few ideas. Hope that helps.
  8. I agree with the comment above re acoustics. The Green was extremely noisy because it was such a big space and so echoey. If that could be sorted out, that would be a big improvement. Its not much fun going out for dinner with friends and hardly being able to hear each other talk! It put us off going to The Green that often. Good luck with it and look forward to seeing it opening.

    Re: cat thread

PGC - your poor puss and poor you. :( Pets become such a part of the family and it is very, very sad to hear what has happened. He will right now be sleeping peacefully, dreaming of all the good times you had together xxx
  10. I don't really know much about this but just to pick up on one point: Just assuming for argument's sake that the presence of a YOT team did cause problems (and by the way I'm not saying that it does!!!), then moving the team off a council estate and onto a main road may be a good thing. Why should council estate tenants have to bear the brunt of any problems? Also they are probably some of the people least likely to be able to 'up and leave' if they don't like their neighbours or the area. Anyway a bit off the point but I just want to challenge the assumption I think some people in society have that council estates are the places for putting anything that may be troublesome.
  11. Lilolil also reminded me about Worriedmum's daughter that was mugged. It was quite a long thread so easy to miss it so have copied and pasted the post: Re: northcross rd 12/10/07 4.20pm Posted by: WorriedMum 18 October, 2007 17:00 lilolil Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It seems that the same girls tried to rob someone > else minutes before!!!! Yes. This was my daughter. She was attacked by three girls outside Country Spray florists on Lordship Lane just before this incident on Friday afternoon. The descriptions are: First girl ? dark mixed race/light black skin with dyed curly brownish hair with bobbles at ends with a white head band - about 5?3? tall. She was wearing a white bomber jacket with hood around hair. Second girl ? black skin, black frizzy afro hair all brushed out, very large built girl, about 5?6 ish wearing black jacket with black bottoms. Third girl ? wearing all black. All girls aged around 16. The girls were friendly initially complimenting her and asking to see her phone. She refused and walked quickly across the road towards the Plough pub to head back home. They followed her, tried to pull out her earrings and then turned nasty on the corner of Plough Lane. The girl in the white bomber jacket tried to drag her down the lane beside the pub pulling her by her arm and her hair. Fortunately a boy of about 15 was passing by and pulled them off of her and told her to run and she ran across the road into Plough DIY. They followed her across and waited outside the kebab shop then walked up towards Dulwich Library. My daughter waited until they had gone and then ran home and we called the police. If anyone sees them please call 999. Crime Reference No. 3035053/07. Thanks. From this thread: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,55777,page=2
  12. > macroban Wrote: > > > Is this a commericial venture presented as a > > community initiative? > snorky Wrote: > Whats the cost BARA ? tell us more Snorky - I hope you've had your question answered now. You take every opportunity to continually make digs. You are insinuating nasty things about community projects that people have worked hard to get off the ground. Stop trying to undermine the efforts of these people. Do you get some sort of perverse pleasure out of trying to jeopardise community projects? Its not clever. You're a disgrace. These projects only succeed with the efforts and support of the community. They don't need people like you who are intent on jeopardising things to further your own personal agenda. Take your nasty and suspicious little mind elsewhere.
  13. Macroban 'asks' a lot of questions like this, implying that people could be deliberately misleading others. That's not nice. She says "Is this a commericial venture presented as a community initiative?" Why should people have to keep defending themselves? Its easy enough to ask a question, without having to imply that people are 'presenting' things in a more favourable light simply to make money. Why imply or accuse such things if there is no basis for it? Why should Bara or ED Community Centre have to answer such questions? If they have to justify themselves and answer questions, why doesn't Macroban turn up in person at an EDCC or Bara meeting and ask them in person and repeat some of the language she's used, rather than taking any opportunity on this forum to pick on certain people.
  14. macroban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is this a commericial venture presented as a > community initiative? Macroban, have you really got nothing better to do than constantly slag off the efforts of others? Anyone who starts accusing the work of East Dulwich Community Centre as being a "commericial venture presented as a community initiative" is really low. Why not trying finding out the facts for yourself, rather than starting many of your posts with unpleasant accusations? Why should anyone have to come on here and defend themeselves? You leave a trail of accusations on this forum - because you can't help yourself, and then the people accused don't want to sink down to the level of arguing with someone as unpleasant as you. Instead of whinging and accusing people, how about doing something positive for the community. If you channelled all that negative energy into doing something positive, it might make you feel better so you don't have to spend much of your time slagging off the efforts of others. People who work with the East Dulwich Community Centre work very hard and many give up much of their free time for no payment whatsoever. They don't look for pats on the back, but they shouldn't have to come onto things onto this forum and face unpleasant comments. Macroban - stop being so downright nasty. (Admin - if I have over-stepped the mark and been too personal, then too bad I guess. She needs telling. She really is unpleasant and has no basis for most of the accusations she makes)

James - you have come on and posted since my question, but not answered my query. PLEASE PROVIDE AN ANSWER. Many thanks
  16. Yes if you report it to the council (0207 525 2000), they come and clean it up within a day. Or e-mail [email protected] I can't understand people who have it outside their house and don't report it. Sometimes it gets cleaned up by the council, but just as often it gets trodden in and spread along the pavement making it worse! I certainly don't want anyone coming into my house bringing the dog mess in so I report it.
  17. James Please can you give us the full list of roads which will be surveyed? I live on Landells (at the Silvester end) and I am a 5 minute walk to Northcross Rd and a 5 minute walk to Lordship Lane (to the police station / William Rose butchers). I am very concerned that any CPZ on the roads immediately off LL will just push any problem to the next road along. So will roads like mine get surveyed because we ae only 5 minutes from the main shops? I think the council needs to look at the bigger pictures - efor exmaple, flats being built all over the place without enough parking provision being provided by greedy developers.
  18. The PO on Lordship Lane is very very busy - always. We need the other post offices - if they close, the PO on Lordship Lane will get even busier! I usually use the post office by Dulwich Library - its on the corner of Landells and Lordship Lane. The queues are much shorter and quicker.
  19. Hi Monkey I's be interested in this too. I'm on Landells. Thanks

  21. Hi there We have problems with Freeview and I asked our aerial company and they said it was the Dawson Heights estate (btw, I like the estate - looks like a ship!) That is just about plausible if I draw a line between my house and the CP transmitter (although I can see the top of the transmitter...), but a line between your house and CP transmitter seems to miss the estate. I also asked another workman about an aerial in a different house and they said reception can be difficult if you live in a low lying area even if you live near a transmitter. Could you get an old analogue TV again (if the old TV was ok)?! Try asking you neighbours how their reception is - if its okay, maybe you could see if you could get wired up to their aerial??
  22. He looks a very handsome tom. You must be missing him a lot. :( I will keep an eye out on my road and in my garden.
  23. Sean - you forget to add: It was the night, in your own words, you officially became an old codger! Don't worry, we'll keep quiet on that one...;-) Anyway was lovely to meet you and 'Louisa' and the others
  24. Nice to meet some of you guys last night at the Bishop! Sean - I'm 99% sure I've talked to you before in one of the shops like Vals. I pretty much talk to anyone and everyone and I can never remember them all! People sometimes come up and start talking to me and I have to ask Mr Ko if we know that person and he always says 'That's the stranger you were talking to for 20 minutes a few weeks ago...' As I said, anyone and everyone, although you were more fun than most. :)) Sorry I'm not coming tonight but have fun!
  25. All for Nun - sorry much too busy (ordering clutch bags) to rant! :)) I went past Goodrich School today and saw a number of big bright yellow banners on the railings telling people not to park on the zigzags, although I've not gone past at start time and home time to see if they're having any effect.
