Sighhhhh - why do people still feel the need to "pray" to ThirdPartyGodSendMoney? Why not do some volunteering, or make a cake and offer it to new neighbours, or host a monthly Networking GirlsNightIn with some new friends and work colleagues to get people meeting who would otherwise not have met. The feeling of having done good is equal to that felt - so I understand from having talked to loads of religious church-going folk - when leaving church. I write a diary every day. Maybe some day thousands of years in the future people will find them and then see me as a God. Except some people will take out all the dirty bits to suit their cause. I am a God. Pray to me. You're forgiven. There, better now? Good. Now go out and do it again. Along with air food water and clothes we humans need recreation. So because science, and EastEnders, had not been invented yet, we made God up to explain thunderstorms and rainbows, and clever enigmatic folk who were natural storytellers made up fabulous stories to back it up. When Jesus came along (and there is little doubt he did) he did the same thing, but with the help of some magic mushrooms. What else was there to do? The Wii was several years away. Now science has explained natural phenomena, we realise the stupidity of the earlier explanations while marvelling at the story telling. Our mistake is to confuse it with "truth". But along the way the religionBosses have realised what fun it is to have so much power over people. They're not giving that up in a hurry. So they indoctrinate guilt and fear into us. A mind virus. And yer got it. But that's my opinions! Edited to add - I pray to the god microbite for all the very good information and thanks!

Kings College Hospital - going to the dogs?
PeckhamRose replied to louisiana's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Even if you are not a Member, write to the Patients Complaints Department. If everyone of you did this, they would have to do something about it.... wouldn't they? (inflection going UP on "they")! -
"My advice would be to find a religion that allows you to explore philosophical questions without demanding your subordination to the political wills of others." I think that was Huguenot writing. My advice would be to not look for any religion in order to do those things. The Humanists' Philosophical Group has written several pamphlets and books inidividually and collectively, about many subjects along these lines, and educational books too.

Kings College Hospital - going to the dogs?

Advice to all with a bad story to tell. 1) Become a "Member" then raise your experience at Members Meetings. 2) Write to the complaints department clearly outlining everything. When ever you write to the complaints department, always state you are a member, by your name. -
Our purpose is what we individually and collectively make it then, isn't it Sean? Dunno! But I also don't know why my honesty in what is otherwise a great topic would convert anyone to religion. I would love to hear others' views.

I feel strangely hopeful and positive about him. I admit I did get emotional at Clinton's inaugeration specially listening to Maya Angelou's contribution. He will have so many hurdles including of course the fact racism is just still so rife in America. Indeed just one man. But maybe one honest man who is upfront about what his problems are may make a difference to how the people feel about the problems and what they do themselves to overcome them. I like he has already said that people have to change their attitudes too. Big talk!

Welcome to the Forum. LostThePlot is organising a forum for people who work from home - I'll try and find the link. Meanwhile, I have a better idea re lunch. Get up reeeeeeeeally late and then have brunch which could be anything, - then work through till the evening. Well, it's what I do!

I am not religious or superstitious so I don't see I have been given a purpose in life (to do "His" work or "His" will or whatever, and so it is a question I do often ask myself specially when I am feeling depressed, and especially given that I have never had the slightest feeling or need to want to have kids - which to some people seems to be their sole reason for living, to breed. I do not believe I have a purpose in life. I did not ask to be born. I can choose to die. But along the way so far I have found out that despite the mess others make for me and the fact they insist I hand over money for the things I need or want, meaning I have to work for this money, that really and truly life has a lot of good things to say for it, if like me you're born in a relatively free country with access to food and shelter etc etc. So I think I'll stick around and enjoy the pleasure I receive from seeing as much of this fabulous world as I can. When I am fed up, I'll end it all. No purpose. No reason. Just gas water and chemicals and chance. My only question is where the hell shall I bury all my diaries. I have been writing one every day for 35 years.

Being naturalised at the Southwark town hall

Oh what a fabulous posting and congrats! Did he have to answer questions about the Kings and Queens of England and other stuff that many of us who were born here can never remember even if we were taught? -
Southwark Council Budget Cuts 2009/10 (Lounged)
PeckhamRose replied to macroban's topic in The Lounge
Interesting thread which (as a relative newcomer) I suspect takes us back to the sort of Forum Marmora Man himself feared had disappeared for a while! I believe Marmora Man has a lot of inside experience in this subject and I bow to it, but I do always worry about when society gets sick (which I believe it currently is) because it opens the way for religious / right to dive into the cracks and "save"/indoctrinate the poor. And this would possibly be under the guise of society helping itself / non profit organisations that Marmora Man talks of. This should be avoided at all costs. On another point "The health of the people is the highest law" is above the Southwark Council library in Walworth Road and I always love seeing that. I certainly believe that Southwark Council (and thus probably any council) likes to have things one way. Example, I was at a council meeting where expensive brochures and cards had been made which would be given to new shops and businesses in the area when they set up shop, to let them know what they can and can not do and what would be expected of them. I said I felt it was so outrageous that Southwark wasted all this money and this opportunity, and did not tell those same businesses and shops what it could in turn expect from the council. For examples, responsible and reasonable rating, and free parking facilities etc. -

Answer to number one: Beauty Plus with dulwichmum! -
But some of them go on to be great filmmakers, so ads just give them the opportunity to hone their crafts. In some cases it works backwards. Peter Richardson of the Comic Strip fame never got the big buck films he hoped for and now makes adverts.

Haahahahahahahhahahaahahaha ???? !! I loved Tony Hart, he made art fun when my teachers made it a chore. Are there any icons in the making today, be for the kids of today, eh? eh?

Ah the ol' John Lewis list. Of course they should come clean; it's our money they're spending. I shall write my letter.

Interesting topic. Dad: William Tell Overture. Mum: Mrs Mills and Russ Conway. Seriously. Edited to make the point I did not follow their recommendation. When I became seriously music-aware it was early seventies which was brilliant.

cdonline: "Doesn't everybody go out with some people just because nothing better has come along yet?" No, it's because there's always a chance he'll buy you jewellery. As Rita Rudner said when talking of a boyfriend who had pierced ears, "He knows pain and he has bought jewellery".

fterPrince Harry's Remark Now Charles Is In THe Spotlight.
PeckhamRose replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
Ignorance may not be a defence but if it is innocent ignorance ie you are using language to someone that others may find offensive although you do not realise or intend it, and you are not racist / offensive in your heart, and they are really not being offended or upset, but some 3rd party wants to sue, what happens? Also, as in the porn and sex situation, what about consent? If someone genuinely consents that their friend can refer to them as Taffy Brummie Pommie Paki or Paddy or whatever, and they refer back to their mate similarly, if it is consensual what's the situation in law? I am with James May - One law Don't Be A Prat. All the rest is being sensible. -
Snob! You got an Iceland!

What is it with drivers and pedestrian crossings in this country!!???
PeckhamRose replied to Strawbs's topic in The Lounge
I agree Tony. I have ridden my motorcycle around a lot of UK and I love this country so much. I am a city girl and could not live happily in the country, but I do love how especially in the north you can be in a city one minute and in the vast countryside five mins up the road. However, one thing links it all, many people in cars do not stop at crossings wherever they are in this country! And probably other countries too! However, in USA, I never experienced the same clear disregard. Honestly. -
Indeed PC is the new religion. However, I would love to know how EHughes can call this EXCITING when - since he is asking for ideas - he can't know IF it is exciting yet. It would not excite me. Little does!

Yeah you're right. They are technically an erotic clothing store, I think. Anything else and their council want thousands more in licence fees. -
