Interesting stats on cycle red light jumpers
malumbu replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
I agree on one point, that this thread has long since run it's course @Rockets as said before this us Vs them is so unhelpful and 'usual suspects' is both insulting and petulant. I've tried not to label people, even by association, as petrolheads or the motorist lobby, and if I have done in the past I apologise. As regards the City of London police campaign this has been discussed mainly times. If the police have a targeted campaign they will catch people. This can be equally applied to WMP and catching illegal ebikes, or in the past country pub boozing, day after the office party or when there were far more random speed traps. Added: obviously we all want to have the last say 😊 -

Scroll up and I gave you the link to the 200 years comment. I'd appreciate your views on the reference as I know you like going into the detail Also where we were and where we are on PM2.5 and the sources. I expect predominantly non-transport. -

Best thing about Camberwell is the carrot. Wonder how many people get that reference 😊 -

I find your post offensive. The Telegraph article makes an unsubstantiated claim that billions of pounds are spent supporting cycling. It just adds the manufactured culture wars, echoed by social media, which at times is quite toxic. Not the world I want. Debate by all means but please stop hurling abuse. -

North Berwick is the best place to live. -
No, do come to the drinks, so we can have a proper debate. It would be good.

I asked a fair question. Why on earth can't you answer it? -

It's a fair question. Throwing lines about billions being spent in cycling us misleading and shows bias. -
This is all a bit vague. I heard it from a mate in the pub who heard it from someone in Sainsbury's. Can you explain more?

What is the source? Billions invested in cycling? Really? How was this calculated? -

Obviously a separate subject: Information at point of sale including those providing kits to convert standard bikes, or get round restrictions on road legal bikes Information campaign accompanied with enforcement by police and local authorities. Target grey importers and the like perhaps legislate that suppliers take some responsibility if bikes are inappropriately used. Perhaps a registration scheme, like owning a shot gun, I will only use this on private land with the owners approval. Costly, and no doubt not fully enforceable. But all worthy of consideration by our politicians. Put up a separate thread and I'll see what select committees, parliamentary groups, local authorities etc have said. -
Dangers of current levels of air pollution in the UK
malumbu replied to Sue's topic in Roads & Transport
Academic paper referred to here published in 2019, I haven't seen the paper so can't comment on why it would have taken 200 years to reach legal street level ambient levels of NO2 https://www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2019/03/11/193-years-for-london-to-be-rid-of-the-invisible-killer-that-paris-will-banish-within-two-decades/ Simplistically the calculation should be: No interventions to improve air quality beyond turn over of vehicles and improved technology as emissions standards improve vs additional measures this Mayor brought it (and last one proposed). The 200 years could only refer to a small section of the London road network. -

https://www.lse.ac.uk/granthaminstitute/news/the-truth-about-londons-ultra-low-emission-zone/ Interesting report by LSE on the ULEZ debunking some of the myths and fake news. Focus is on NO2 as this is primarily due to transport emissions. Particulates come from numerous sources including domestic burning of coal and wood. Even before the ULEZ most road vehicles came with particulate filters (diesel) and three way cats (petrol) that dealt with larger particles of soot. Age constraints on taxis and retrofitting older buses, was an important step Greater focus on finer particulates now. -

Rather than just dismiss what I have to say because it doesn't fit in with your narrative why don't you engage with what I have raised. This is the way you have behaved for several years. On your soap box but when points worthy of discussion are raised you fail to engage. It's daft lumping all cyclists together. Most of the public can differentiate between a parent on their bike taking their kid to school, a teenager riding to school through the Village to Kingsdale or Dulwich College, an older person pootling on their bike, and a supersized illegal ebike doing 25mph. Or would you as a cyclist like to be labelled as a the latter? Why on earth is that relevant? I have posted a thread on the joys of cycling, and one on cycle routes, both hijacked by the usual suspects complaining about cyclists. I add some balance to the numerous threads attacking cyclists. I could give you numerous examples of poor driving but life is too short. Haven't a clue why you posted this and what value it has to the discussion. I've never said drivers are a uniform group. I'm aware that some cyclists do daft things. I choose to look at the bigger picture as the benefits of cycling outweigh all the negativity on this forum. This us vs them stuff is so unhelpful. -
Should Rachel Reeves target offshore ownership of residential properties?
malumbu replied to vladi's topic in The Lounge
The worry is that if you target rich people (a) it doesn't generate a lot of revenue as numbers are relatively small it (b) supposedly drives away investors in the UK economy. Obviously for the reasons above it is the right thing to do on principle. The other way round I was vaguely involved many years ago in work looking at how big companies were shifting profit into offshore accounts, the usual suspects BVI, Bermuda and the like. And there's those that argue that is the nature of things to support our pension funds and investments and make the UK an attractive place to manage your money. -
Credible enough that a National newspaper reported it and that he didn't see them. Do you think he is a racist? Or to be more diplomatic that some of his party's policies meet the criteria of being racist?

checked with a DC college and whilst they deny whistle blowing, apparently our Nige has an unpleasant past: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/nigel-farage-fascist-nazi-song-gas-them-all-ukip-brexit-schoolfriend-dulwich-college-a7185236.html It would be good to hear of fans of Mr Farige to say why he has been a victim. I'm with Lammy

Dangers of current levels of air pollution in the UK
malumbu replied to Sue's topic in Roads & Transport
The 200 years is rather exaggerated but great that the ULEZ together with sustainable streets, better emissions standards and move to EVs has delivered. Ironic that more effective emissions standards was due in part to VW cheating. It's world, not EU or UK standards. -
Yes, I like the planting/planters

They end up all over the world. There is a part of china where there is a massive recycling industry. I wish I could recall the article as it had percentages, the west, and South America, being pretty low as final destination. Not sure how many get sold on in country of origin/ownership

You still haven't said what was wrong with his speech. Knowing some that went to school with Farige.... No I'll stop there.
