Pavement Distancing - Visual Guidance On Grove Vale

You must quarantine all the plants you are transferring. First shake them thoroughly in a bucket of water and any loose duck weed will float out so can scim it off with a net. Hand pick any that is still adhering. When you think the plants are clean, leave them in > quarantine for a week or two and check them a couple of times. Even the tiniest duckweed leaves will grow to full size in that time. Do likewise with any mud and water you are transferring. > MarkT Thanks Mark, I did my best to remove the duckweed, but did not quarantine plants and now picking the stuff out or skimming with a tea strainer. Probably futile but I seem to have time on my hands. PM me if you want some yellow iris, it spreads quickly so I have a lot to spare. Delivery can wait until times are easier.

Shocking, I also heard that there was a crash on the M4 today between a lorry of fruit and a tanker with sugar. There was one hell of a jam. Lovely toilet paper readily available on line https://www.amazon.co.uk/IZAL-MEDICATED-STRONG-TOILET-TISSUE/product-reviews/B00FRK2RCC

Probably as absorbent as Izal - horrid stuff we had at school (there will be generations who had to 'hold it in' when at school) and when I first started working https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-izal-medicated-toilet-paper-250219659

I didn't think that it would be worth having an adult conversation with you about patriotism, nationalism and the like. But I have found you a friend. For those interested it refers to Liz Truss and the televised cabinet meeting. Nah nah nah nah nah.

Good thread. I leave it to a mate (when I was allowed to go cycling with a mate) to do the route as he's apped and Garmined up. We went to France using the 'quiet' routes, one included the hardly used 1930 bike lane by the A3 towards Guildford, yuk. In France we ended up on farm tracks and the like, on road bikes, getting caught in long grass in a meadow at one point and the best was when we hit a ford at a small river. As this meant going onto stepping stones I was going to take my shoes and socks off (would have slipped in bike shoes) until a chap walking his dog advised of an old stone footbridge 100m upstream. It all added fun and adventure to the ride. Occasionally I have to resort to Google maps, and on one drive I was getting grumpy as it told me to go through a path by a station, until I realised that my phone defaults to bike routes not motorised vehicles. Obviously my passenger was doing the navigation whilst I was driving.

From my observations in the last week or so the local cemeteries have not been overrun with walkers. In part as we have plenty of places to walk and cycle. We are encouraged to exercise. Nunhead cemetery is a great place to do this. Shame.

It's the Goodies, not really worth clicking on but perhaps others have amusing clips related to panic buying. Glad that some of you can still laugh.....

B hell. I've lived through a sugar shortage and then toilet paper. I'm running out of sitcoms to use to parody the situation. It remind me of the great string shortage in the mid 70s. I've not embedded the video as it really wasn't that funny the first time
-
Shame. They've also closed Camberwell new cemetery. Both nice places to walk and enough space for social distancing.
-
Here's the excellent Citizen Khan video that the government is using for a public info campaign. Shame I couldn't find the actual version that has been aired. Anyway tickled me, and a good way to make the point of minimising use and not hoarding.

I do ten or so miles a day. This is my main exercise and replaces my commute when I used to go into central London which I did for a long time. I keep my distance from others so not braking any advice and not taking the p by driving out or getting a train to my route. Go for it. It was nice to find a local route as my social rides in the past would be out into Kent. The lighter traffic makes riding on the main road much more of a joy.

Sounds pretty good to me, adventurous but still fairly simple. Think you could bulk this up and it will only improve with time. Not eating meet most of the veggy curries purchased in restaurants and supermarkets are gloopy and bland. I've also been across India and Sri Lanka and experienced some of the regional variations. Sorry I'm sounding rather pretentious. Anyway hope I have encouraged others to try. I'll also be steeling some of the suggested ingredients below. > > Well yes, I'd like to think that I do too. Agghhh, not more traffic calming. Need average speed cameras. I've worked in transport and expect we will have met, but government kowtowing to motorists really pees me off. Once we have a culture of speed cameras it will be like the ban in smoking in pubs and restaurants, within a few weeks it will be normal and the world will be a better place for it. As this is a thread aimed at new cyclists a time to remind all of us on assertive positioning, primary where possible (in in the middle of the available space on our lane). The one place where primary is difficult is the Brenchley Gardens race track. Dunno when Southwark did the speed survey, 26mph as they report would be a decent result. I expect the people doping the survey had hi-vis on with a big sign up saying that they were monitoring speed. Or they did it based on a sample of one very careful driver. My experience is 50mph.

Yes try talking to them, as they are probably not reading this thread. I've found most people oblige. Shouldn't do any harm reinforcing the message.

Has anyone in ED actually heard about the virus?

> > F*** the circumstances > Slightly racist..... > Or is it me ?! In deed, this thread can be quite toxic. The earlier post was pompous at the best, going through elitist through to full on hate. I wondered if it may be ironic, to draw the attention to some of my concerns, but it appeared to too specific. The sarcastic/passive aggressive title of this thread seems to attract a clash of middle class sensitivities with Daily Mail/Hate rants. Telling that BJ majored on society (ie the good things that we are doing) distancing from Thatcher stating that there is no such thing as society https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/apr/08/margaret-thatcher-quotes celebrating the cult of individuality. Anyway, whether this crisis will help to mend broken Brexit Britain we will have to see. Let's hope so. Meanwhile can we encourage people (society) to do the right thing and focus on the positives? That doesn't mean an end to political discussions or a ban of humour, including dark and gallows. Ps just heard that you need to wear masks in Austria when going outside. Don't recommend these masks (warning this image can give nightmares) https://www.revolvermag.com/music/slipknots-5-gray-chapter-how-death-trauma-shaped-2014-comeback-album -
Today's route over to Greewich and Blackheath, through the park. Fairly empty - I think the cold is putting people off coming outside. You can combine parts of Waterlink Way. https://www.letsride.co.uk/routes/greenwich-blackheath

Thanks Sally - cycling is great. Others, please do not ambush this thread. Doing my daily walk or cycle every day feels like a Sunday with so little traffic and almost everybody enjoying the outdoors and keeping their distance. Please let us keep this one pleasure and not go down the route of France. Yes, don't drive or get the train out to do your exercise. Sadly Brenchley gardens, even with much less traffic, still feels like a motorised vehicle race track. But that is an issue for another day.

I make a better curry than the ubiquitous/formulaic UK curry house - the basic sauce comes in large bags of dried ingredients. I can't compete with the Babur as they have gone into another food dimension. Now is the chance to experiment and you will find most of the spices that you want in Khans in Peckham or SMBS foods, obviously go there to to a proper shop rather than just buy one ingredient. I'm not beyond finding things on line and Rick Stein's kidney bean curry is a good one. Learned on his travels in India.

I'm also taking the opportunity of upgrading my pond, returning to the original shape using a liner. I'd used a preformed pond a few years ago replacing the earlier home made pond, but it never worked as well. I found frogs and newts as I emptied the old pond, hope they will come back again. Questions for any experts out there. Can you get rid of duck weed? What are the best pond plants? I've got irises (quite evasive) and a marsh marigold and some oxygenating pond weed. I'll have some spare established irises to give away post Covid-19 and the preformed pond which I might as a few quid for charity.

As you lot went off and bought all the toilet paper I was forced into using omelettes to wipe me bum. Good public information campaign by the way with Citizen Khan hoarding toilet paper. Perhaps there is one with eggs too. Of course there is a correlation with eggs and toilet paper.

Maybe something to do with the weather and food availability. Squirrels come into our garden from time to time, and try to raid the bird feeders. Then we don't see them for months. Sadly Louise you seem to have stolen our goldfinches. Had about a dozen last year, now down to 2, after I spent a small fortune on niger/nyger seed. How ungrateful!

Do add your recommendations. Tonight's Now Show on Radio 4 is worth catching up on. Light-hearted but not doing a hatchet job, bringing out positives. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000gn6z, They recorded it remotely.
