  1. Its a bit like catnip for humans - you know you shouldn't, you know it's not doing you any good, but just one more outrageous story.......... an online secret that I now know I share with others.

The point I was trying to make was that when I moved to ED it was a far more mixed area than it is now - there were of course families and young children but the bars, restaurants and cafes (although to be honest there weren't many of those) were not predominently childfriendly. I see nothing wrong with the mix there is now, but the area is not the same social mix now as it was when I chose to buy here, and therefore I did not chose to live in an area that is well know for its high density of families - it has become that over the years.

Funnily enough East Dulwich and some of its residents were here BEFORE it became a mecca for young families.

Sadly though, whether right or wrong it is the few badly behaved/badly parented children that stick out in the memory, not the ones who are well behaved and quiet.
  5. The only thing that I really feel different about from a couple of decades ago is ease of getting home. The night bus no longer seems funny any more and taxis seem to be several times more expensive than they used to be.

LOL! and middle aged women too - however aren't snakebites illegal now??? better still snakebites with a ginger wine.................. or even better snakebite with a pernod and black............

    Breaking Bad

The Killing series 3 starts on BBC4 next Saturday - hope it is better than series 2 which was a bit of a disappointment after series 1 (still good but not THAT good)
  8. Over 50's covers an awful lot of bases. People just into their 50's who probably are still the same as they were in their 40's (albeit with a good party behind them instead of in front of them), up to much much older.
  9. Shingo totally surpassed himself with my last cut - all my friends are wowing over it. The difference between the guys at Kuki and many other hairdressers is that they LISTEN. Yes, they make suggestions but you end up more or less with what you actually wanted. I am still smiling at the mirror!
  10. Bit late in the day to comment on this but just to say how great that things worked out for you so well - you are indeed blessed to have a partner/wife/whatever who has been able to come to terms with the real you and who must have made so many sacrifices and compromises to make it right. I sadly know of two other couples whose relationships broke down under the strain of the necessary (especially physical/sexual) changes in the relationship - you two are to be congratulated and I hope that things remain strong between you in the future.
  11. If you don't want to visit the doctor for anti-depressants and I fully understand your desire to avoid that, make sure that you are eating properly - I know you said that you were denying yourself for your children but tbh if you get ill you cannot help them. Make sure you get some fresh air and gentle exercise. Sorry if I sound patronising but like others I have been down there and it is not nice. Good luck.
  12. No wonder the standard of maths is so low in this country.
  13. Spice of Life on Cambridge Circus before it became a tourist trap, followed by Pollo to keep you going, then 'Alice in Wonderland' night somewhere south of TCR tube station - followed by falling asleep on the nightbus on the way home and finding yourself at Heathrow airport...............

Not sure if it was detrimental to the health of the people using it or for the tree. I guess there was always the possibility that someone could get hurt and then feel that they deserved damages...............

  16. James - why don't you contact the London Wildlife Trust who administer the woods. I don't think it is a winner 24/7 for the reasons raised above, but the woods have had special days for children (Teddy Bear Picnics and the like) so maybe something like this could be included on some weekends over the year.
  17. Re chains vs independents - to me some of it is knowing that the money I hand over is going to the person in that shop/bar/restaurant, or to their immediate boss and not to faceless stockholders anywhere in the world.
  18. There have been many rough sleepers in the woods over the years - some have mental problems, some don't want to be sucked into the system and some just don't know what else to do and the woods are preferable to a doorway in the Strand. It is a real shame that this person was threatening, and as they may well have mental problems it was probably a good idea to call in the authorities, if nothing else they may well be able to help him.

Come on - sitting in the car (or the beer garden) the landlord couldn't see it was YOU drinking the bacardi & coke whilst your driving parent drank the straight cola.
  20. Wagamama 10/12 years ago fitted the bill - the seating arrangements, the ordering and the food all seemed different and FUN - great for a meal before or after a film or whatever - even then it wasn't a destination restaurant. Now so many restaurants have similar arrangements that it is no longer original or fun and therefore needs to rely on the quality of food to get repeat custom................

  22. So the Begging Bowl - any good?
  23. I think the last statement of the ES review (although glowing) would explain why I'd stick to the Thai Corner Cafe - 'dinner and wine for 2 ?70 with tip'. Same at TCC (albeit with brought in wine) - mmm about ?20 max.
  24. Just be careful about putting berries straight into your mouth or the mouths of babes which are at the right height for dogs to have piddled over. Wash those first and keep the ones at a greater height for the snacking!
