I have and I am very interested in visiting another Sunday - sounds very interesting. Elephant is not my favourite part of London (was mugged there a few years ago) but anything that can add to the vibrancy and diversity of the area has to be a plus.
  2. Fushia What about becoming a member - if you use the facilities enough it is as cheap if not cheaper than paying as you go and obviously gives you the opportunity to book in advance. Incidentally if you are a member and book and then are a no-show, technically you have to pay for the class - whether or not that happens in practice I have no idea.
  3. "I would like to see Vietnamese food, Mexican food and other world cuisines." Agreed - there is a 'foodie' market in Venn street in Clapham Common last weekend of the month - offerings such as delicious arancia 'risotto rice balls' from Sicily which are one of my favourites, and it would be great to have similar closer to home.
  4. There was a young lad slumped in the corner by the Gateway/Funeral Parlour, lots of policemen and a couple of crying girls. I tried to avert my eyes but all the policement waving their arms around did rather attract the attention, I couldn't see any obvious signs of violence. This was about 4.50.
  5. Having a proper swim in an overwarm pool is dreadful - you just don't feel refreshed. It would seem that the problem is that there is no temperature that will suit people who want a vigorous aerobic swim, which will also suit children. It does seem a shame that there is no separate 'mother and baby pool' with a warmer temperature.
  6. There were loads of timetables in a display unit next to the door opposite the reception area today.

Seems rather a sweeping statement to me. when I go to the shops in LL I often have a chat with the owners. Obviously they want to make a profit, otherwise what is the point of them putting in the hours, investing their money etc etc (incidentally employing other local people). That doesn't mean they don't give a shit ............

But if the shop owners (mainly small independents) don't stay in profit they will close down, people don't run their own businesses in this current economic environment for the fun of it. Then there will be either chains who care even less about locals and who probably would not offer the same variety, or there will be empty shops. What kind of quality of environment would make up for either of those possible scenarios?
  9. Looked at pool on the way to a class - looks great - will hopefully get a chance to use it next week. Reception area looks fabulous and the staff seem pleased to be in such a nice space. Couple of teething problems with the air con upstairs, but apart from that Stage I looks very successful. Roll on Stage II and the refurbished gym.
  10. Melbourne Grove has improved albeit from a very low standard...............
  11. That's brilliant James, many thanks. So looking forward to an early morning swim.
  12. Bummer - I'm also a Brockwell park regular (esp now that a trip to The Florence can be planned before/after/both). Clapham is a bit of a distance so maybe it will be the Sports Club.
  13. I loved the original - I think it was the first 'adult' drama I was allowed to watch - so deliberately avoided the remake. I had such a crush on James Aubrey.........sigh.
  14. Is East Dulwich the London Lymington? http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/sep/13/lymington-rejects-wetherspoons-pub
  15. The Weatherspoons in Forest Hill is in an old cinema, I haven't been around here long enough to know if there was anything in the building between its use of a cinema or its use as a pub. I wonder if it had not been taken over by JDW it would have been knocked down and flats built there instead - and it is a lovely building. Also local pubs which cater to a different clientele such as the Dartmouth Arms are thriving even though there is a JDW less than 5 minutes away. It is strange that people who are desperate for a chain such a M&S Food or Waitrose to come to ED suddenly get wildly defensive of independents when the chain doesn't suit them.
  16. A lot of Weatherspoons are as described, souless and depressing, however these do tend to be the older ones. In Exeter, Weatherspoons bought and restored an old Chapel which revitalised an area of town which was getting run down. Hopefully they will do a good job on the Vale, which was hardly one of the most popular spots in ED. At a CAMRA do, I was chatting to the CAMRA guys about Weatherspoons, and they said that a lot of people had tried their first real ale in a Weatherspoons which had led them to go out and try different beers in other pubs. I'd probably visit a local Weatherspoons during their beer festivals, and in my opinion the state of the beer served is more a reflection of the manager's attitude than any company wide policy. It's like the Cafe Nero - if you don't like it don't go (I've never been and have no intention of going), but it's what some people want.

  19. Where is your friend undertaking his studies? If he's found somewhere and has been allocated a supervisor they should be very helpful as if the PhD is worth it, then the kudos of supervising it will initiate suggestions of funding. UCL were very patient with me whilst I looked into avenues of funding and were prepared to wait for me to have the funds before taking my money. In the end my project died a natural death but if the project is that good there are people out there who will be prepared to help out. Edited to add that your friend could consider doing a part time PhD to start with - that would enable him to earn whilst he started his studies and once you are an insider it is much easier to find out about funding that it is from the outside. Every university has different rules for how long you have as a part-timer to research and to then write up your thesis so that might be another alternative route for him.
  20. KK - that does sound truely awful. My partner drives a van as do a few of my friends, I will make them aware of what happened to you. I know if must have been dreadful and I expect your attention was on getting away safely but do you have even a vauge description of them so that we can be aware if we see them.
  21. What about a charge for no-shows?
  22. I'd much prefer a premium paid for rucksacks over a certain size, and people who feel that their bag/blackberry/laptop is more worthy of a seat than me or any other person (pregnant or not) should pay a ticket for that item too.
  23. There is a lovely albeit small front garden in Fellbrigg with loads of white lilies in it - I love passing it as they look so elegant.
  24. I don't know if this is true or not but a German friend told me that when the US were forming their first constitution there was a vote to see what language the 'United' states would speak and that German only lost by a couple of votes. How different would the history of the last century in particular be if the US had been a Germanic orientated country and entered the two WW on the other side.
  25. I agree with Evilmaniac. On the couple of times I have been running late for an appointment at DMC I have called them to let them know I was having problems and have been seen without further ado when I finally arrived. What is the point of your mobile if you don't use it under such circumstances? If on the other hand you are one of those rare people that don't have a mobile then obviously this option would not have been open to you.
