  1. We're in Lacon and Goose Green and St John's are the closest. I agree with Mrs Lotte: preferred schools change over the years and whereas Heber seems to be the most popular choice at the mo', it could be GG in a few years time. GG is certainly on the up. BTW, Lacon is a great location. Walking distance to the station and the park, and spitting distance to LL and the market. It's also very quiet and the police assured us that the drive-by shooting a year or so back was not connected to any of the road's residents. Good luck and if you buy, welcome!
  2. Bleak. Are you saying that a life of (relative) material poverty is not worth living? Aren't the best things in life free? 3. I quite like the simplicity of those sites compared with the all-action sites these days. It annoys me when I want to read a simple news story, for example, and have to negotiate the various pop-ups, videos, ads, etc that accompany the story. Time to check out retirement home options I think.
  4. Just to clarify, I'm the Dad. Maybe my use of the phrase 'get on my t*ts' confused.
  5. It seems the applicants have presented 2 options. One plan is to house the pharmacy in the existing building, behind the reception desk, with a portacabin out the back to house the displaced admin staff. The other is to have the pharmacy in a portacabin in the car park at the front of the building. Personally I'd rather the DMC focussed on improving their core service.
  6. Here's an early birthday present: '.' and ','.
  7. Your friend's got a cheek I'd say. I think many parenting debates are polarising because people care so much about the subject, that is, their children! If you think you're doing the right thing by your kids, it's hard to accept opposite points of view because you're admitting you may have got it wrong. Parents who adopt a black and white perpective on all parenting issues, and criticise parents who don't share their views, get on my t*ts. Chillaxed p.s. for the record, we've tried it all on the sleeping front (cuddling, rocking, us sleeping on the nursery floor, him sleeping in our bed, controlled crying, more dummies, more milk, less dummies, less milk, water instead of milk, tea instead of milk, window open, window closed, night light, blackout blinds, cuddly toy, no cuddly toy, stroking back, stroking tummy, sleep training light with pic of sleeping and awake sheep, begging, crying (us), rash promises for future presents that he couldn't possibly understand, and so on. He sleeps well now!

    manners

I'm a fan of doffing my cap in thanks. I wonder whether people miss this sometimes. My wife thinks I'm a complete tool when I do it mind.

    manners

I believe the boffins have already come up with a watertight theory. nununoolio Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Who needs manners when you have money! (and I'm not saying that all people with money have no manners but most people with no manners do seem rather well off!)
  10. Interesting, and you're half right. We actually Googled 'good places to live in London', or maybe 'villages in London', and ED was one of the neighbourhoods mentioned. Being expats we have no family ties so all of London was in scope. We did look at some of the other ?villages? you?d expect to be mentioned (Barnes, Wimbledon, etc) but they didn?t compare to ED on most measures. We rented a flat in Chelsea and bought a house in ED: same cost (rent v mortgage) more or less. But when I say ED is better than Chelsea I mean better regardless of relative affordability: it's greener, better transport links to the City (give me a seat and an open window on the train over a packed tube any day), better pubs and cafes, more accessible shopping, friendlier (by a country mile), a community spirit (as opposed to none in Chelsea), good state schools with student bodies that reflect wider London, and of course the EDF. Newbie or upwardly mobile or yuppie or whatever, I love ED and have the middle-class tat fridge badge to prove it! Back on topic, I can confirm South Norwood did not come up in our internet search for a good, family neighbourhood.

  12. Don't know about that, I'm a so-called newbie and this is the area I really want. Perhaps there are some who see ED as a staging post, but I'd hazard a guess that most do not and many of those that do change their mind after spending a few years here. We came from Chelsea (so downwarldy mobile to use your terminology) and I can say that ED is 10 times better. I walked around ED at dawn a few weekends back and every single person I came across bid me a good morning. No chance of that in SW3.
  13. Agree with MP. The issues associated with snow are mostly predictable and manageable; the train copmanies have dropped the ball, again.
  14. I heard the hospital (the postcode they used in their online poll of preferred sites was the hospital?s, I think). But other posts on this and the proposed Harris school suggest that making any sort of decision about the hospital before September next year is unlikely).
  15. And yet 10 times better than the 'tags' that scrotes do these days. I'd be happy to see something like the above there now, if not a mural. Maybe the kids that painted the catering business's window board could have a crack.
  16. Can't think of an excuse to bump this thread so just going to bump it.
  17. Depending on what your skillset is and what job you're after, try registering with a few agencies (if possible, specialist agencies). We do most of our recruiting through them as (usually) they are pretty good at shortlisting good candidates. And of course, they do the searching for you. I'd also echo what MM said - match your CV to the job you're applying for. A lot of skills and experience these days are highly transferable, but it's up to you, in your CV and in the interview, to highlight this. Good luck.
  18. Does anyone know if the revised timetable is a definite or will they revert to a normal timetable if the forecast snow does not eventuate? Thanks.
  19. Vinyl - Purple Rain, Prince CD - Hallowed Ground, Violent Femmes Download - Purple Rain, Prince (had long since lost or thrown out my vinyl so most of my first downloads were of albums I'd owned back in the day)
  20. Bob, is 'stand-alone oral' really illegal? I'm at work so prefer not to Google it.
  21. Do you wear an appropriate uniform or costume when you are curtailing these crimes? Could I be so bold as to suggest a dull grey suit, black leather shoes and a pocket protector?
  22. H - I think she wants to convert an exisitng buterfly roof into a loft.
