Sean, Ask them to stop! You have to be careful, but I've done it. I sound quite sharp, say please and sit down and make like I am perfectly in the right. Also, the bus firms and the tube are putting up stickers regarding this and headphone noise following a petition. Nero

I read that one teacher said she had two children in her class called 'Unique'. Nero

Seema asked me to start a new thread re Goose Green Dulwich Festival: I looked at the pix from last year. What struck me was how 'PLU" (people like us) it was. I know that ED has a certain demographic, but I'd say 90% were white, 20-50 somethings. There are black and asian people living around here, but why are they not there? I rarely see ethnic minorities in The Palmerston, Black Cherry, Caffe Nero, Jacks, etc. It disturbs me and makes me feel uncomfortable about why this should be. Do the minorities feel excluded? Are there any ethnio minority EDF posters? Discuss. Nero

Who was that red-head who was in ER a while back? My mate got off with her when she lived on or near Goose Green. Scandalabra! Nero

How do you know I am not a parent? I am not passing judgement on you or anyonr, just applying whbat I think is acceptable and healthy detachment, which does not detract from my humanity. The fact that yhou feel under attack suggests you might have guilt feelings regarding your conduct towards your child/ren. I am not blaming, either, merely looking at the picture in the round. I am sure if they were my friends or relatives, I'd have different feelings. But I am not. Just because they are on the telly does not mean I know them, annd as such I feel duty bound to my conscience to explore all the facets to this admittedly tragic affair. FYI, I don't like being perceived as less of a human being because I have not sired and raised offspring. There are many people who are gay, straight, infertile, adult-centric who resent being seen as a proto-person becauuse they don't have children. Nero

DM, Although we all feel for the family, it does seem odd that such a professional, head-screwed on couple should not have used the service. This does not detract from my sympathy for them, but, ultimately, they are not my friends or relatives, but unknown people in the news and I simply can't let my common sense be hijacked by empathy. I am not an ogre, and I don't think STB is either, just a rational and necessarily detached human being. Again, if they were on the dole and addicted to alcopops and Embassy No 1 holidaying in a concrete Costa resort and their kid was called Jakki I suspect at least some of us would have a different opinion. I am so pleased the newspapers haven't given them a hard time for not employing a baby minder. I fear that if the couple were not middle-class, attractive, articulate and wealthy, and instead, scruffy, working-class, tatooed and poorly educated the Mail etc. would have acted very differently. It makes me think of the Ben Needham case, which was never solved. I feel terribly sorry for all involved. Nero

I have to work that day. I looked at the pix from last year. What struck me was how 'PLU" (people like us) it was. Anti plastic bag types please look at the message on the Lounge regarding a petition for plastic bags to be taxed. Nero

Remember when the Plough was the Goose and Grenade, I mean Granite? I got in touch with the pub company and pointed out what a tip it looked - dead ivy hanging down, graffiti, charred sign etc. A while later it got smarted up a bit. Not sure if there is a link or whether it is a coincidence. Nero

Where I live, in the Upper East Side there is less 'gentrification'. There are quite a few houses that are like something from the 70s, and I feel that it will take a long long time before all of the area becomes Claphamised. There is a sense of community and it feels more 'normal' than house after house of similarly zhooj'd houses. Nero

I was searching for a good comparison, and Eccleshall Rd hits the nail on the head. I am still scratching my head as to what we could do with, apart from an Italian or Vietnamese restaurant. Perhaps we should all be satisfied with our lot? Nero

Strange things afoot at the Circle K
Nero replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The man who deals with Tesco stores only deals with the big ones. The woman who deals with Express stores is on holiday, and will be back on Tuesday. I will ring her then and let you know. Nero -
I do, and I think it might be a turn for the worse. Not wanting to rehash previous arguments, but if we get a Tesco and a White Stuff etc. there will be a bit of a shift. It is tangible. But it is good to see Sema Thai and Karavan etc. having makeovers. Nero

If you are mard in Northwest England, especially Manchester/Stockport, you are a bit wet, sissy, cowardly. Hence 'mard arse'. Nero

Just put in a call to Tesco press office. The bloke in charge of this area is not there, so I've left a message. Watch this space. Nero -
Cycling charter from the evening standard
Nero replied to beatnic's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
How do you get them to wear helmets etc? You make sure that they know that if they don't the will be fined. That's the only way, apart from education. Of course, whether the police have the funds and inclination to do just that is another thing entirely. Nero BTW, I am thinking seriously about getting a bike to ride around on and into work, a Pashley, perhaps. (Don't want to have to lean forward due to 2 prolapsed discs.) Any thoughts? Nero -
My great aunt was called Annice. Have never come across this anywhere else. Also, saw a website that said a teacher oop north had listed some of the great names her kids were called. Debenham was one. Nero

Cycling charter from the evening standard
Nero replied to beatnic's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What I meant to say was that according to those twelve points, cyclists could be seen to be getting everthing done on their behalf and not having to do anything themselves. I did not mean that cyclists in general right now not doing anything themselves, but did not express myself sufficiently well. Nero
