  1. Ah but that's where I disagree reggie - I remember when Paddy was loaded with all sorts of connotations and threat - but really, how many people now ever use the term as an insult? The Irish have over the last 15 years been accepted into society in a way that wasn't imaginable 20 years ago. It's not just the absence of "No Irish welcome" signs in B & Bs - it's the proliferation of Irish culture everywhere If someone were to call me Paddy now I wouldn't feel threatened - I would just look at them as some relic from a bygone era. The term "paki" is getting to be the same way - the levels of intimidation seem lower than even 10 years ago - but we're not there yet. The word is still loaded and toxic
  2. Or even if we don't beat Italy, some cold ones and some chit chat
  3. I'm watching these as you post - and laughing out loud. A lot
  4. then lenk would come along - without supervision! - and spoil it for everyone... Remember they don't care about saddoes on the internet - but they are attracted to them
  5. I wouldn't recommend it

    100s

Kel's back! What I want to know is, how many 100s has quid's done. And when he gets to 100 100s - what then The 1000 was spectacular tho (btw Kel - Piers gave a clue with his post - it should be 28 or 29 now)
  9. I'm still waiting for eater81's contribution to that thread. Or this one... I hear you on the baking thing - I'm going with stewing. As in food.. not miserable internal monologues
  10. and the weather must contribute as well. To the dourness I mean But point taken Ted. Having done a driving holiday over 2 weeks I was on both coasts, and the very middle. I did indeed come across a LOT of dour people. But in truth, I quite like a bit of dourness signed A Guilty (ex)Catholic
  11. if someone is indian, why would you need to say "you look like an indian" if someone isn't an indian, why would you want to? And of course all races and cultures exhibit racist tendancies - but it shouldn't be acceptable in any case. As for Dour Presbyterian Scots - if you combine all three, the scottish people I have met who are Presbyterian do tend to be dour. But then so do the irish Presbyterians. I haven't met any Presbyterians from Pakistan tho.. so can't comment That's the thing with presbyterianism - dourness is sort of built in. I don't think it's particularly Scottish. And besides no one is scrawling "go home Scotty Presbyterians" on any houses that I know of
  12. we're cheeky, we're chirpy...
  13. Is this because politicians are weak or is it because the public is contrary and fickle? Bit of both probably
  14. And aliens visit us and conduct scientific s'periments
  15. Peter Taylor gone as well
  16. Castle KO - 8pm (I'm expecting busy so will aim to get there for 7) Association Football, yes
  17. Shame you are away Mick - I thought you'd be a shoe-in So - quids, piers, mrs piers, me - that builder from Penge is unlikely to make it anyone else?
  18. Yeah I regret jumping in so solidly - I still think asking the question "Why is the use of "Paki" derided but "Dour Scots" is acceptable. " is a bit disingenuous tho But cringe or not, a lot of people do want permission to use the term - switch on LBC or almost any talk show discussing the subject now and you;ll here them - so I just asked the question
  19. ooh blimey I just did a refresh and saw it before I read this - yes that's noticeable!
  20. Assuming this all came about because of Strictly Come Dancing, the passnotes on du Beke were amusing Anton
  21. I used it only because it remains government owned - whereas our govt seems to want shot of it As I say, I agree that the need for such a service is diminishing rapidly, and I also agree that the union tactics are self-defeating But the whole thing could be managed more honestly and efficiently. Tell people, we ARE going to run this thing down, you won't get the same postal service you had, other firms will be available, you'll be (mostly) ok. But it'll cost (you) more, Until then we will employ people who know all of the above and won't complain about it, we;ll cross-train as many existing employees as possible but things move on Then stand on that ticket
  22. the music doesn't start for a minute or so but it's this "Something Wicked This Way Comes" I keep singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZIBxo4m-oo&feature=related (not the excellent Herbaliser or Barry Adamson songs of the same name) But Labour need, for their own sakes, as well as ours, some time away from power. As quids said I hope the tories don't get a huge majority.. some balance might be in order for 4 years.
  23. He was and I overreacted I'm trying desperately to make it up to him behind the scenes!
  24. Given Mike's sudden realisation about the suspension of the forum , isn't it probably true that many others won't have read this notice - I'm thinking especially in the family sections where arrangements are often made is it worth circulating the news more widely?
