  1. What SimonM said Jimmy why would you infer that? I am against too much power with the police (only at the turn of the 20th century-ish, have Londoners started to respect the police - before then they were routinely despised) but I am fully in support of the need for a policeforce But as mentioned on other threads - powers need controls
  2. A very good example of what is wrong with police powers - airport security measures as exist are theatre and only serve to annoy an awful lot of passengers. If you feel reassured by them more fool you but it means the rest of us have to suffer whilst any dedicated terrorist can still efefctively do what they want
  3. Normalising Stop and Search for knife crime would mean those powers would then be extended for any other "problem" which comes along. I think Quid's take on the reasons for football hooliganism's reduction is a tad one-dimensional This report for example has plenty of other factors to take into account Are there many countries where the state goes down the road of increased police powers to this extent and done well? I can think of a few examples (Germany, Ireland) where it has been a vey bad thing. It brutalises the state There is a reason knife-carrying (and therefore knife-crime) is more prevelant than in the past. This country, as with America, follows a winner takes all model. The more equality widens the more you will see of it. It really doesn't matter if you or I think "well, it's the individuals choice to carry a knife" - as a society we all have to take responsibility for creating the social conditions which breed this kind of behaviour I'm not inherently against stop and search - but I wouldn't want to see it promoted as THE CURE. As well as curtailing all of our freedoms, it becomes counter-productive in what it sets out to do
  4. Jeremy is usually the goto guy when something needs saying well
  5. * pokes KK *
  6. Do life's winners also put coded messages as their sig?
  7. Another ploy of Tony's is to spend... ooooh 5 paragraphs or so complaining that someone hasn't responded to a point of his Several people rebut some of his points and he just ignores them I don't know why I mention it, I'm only going to get slimed again
  8. Mina You'll be fine - we will look after you. And welcome
  9. You're a grown man snorky. An intelligent one too Take some f***ing responsibility for your actions dammit
  10. Well, judging from the nunheadforum, Nunhead is pretty crime free
  11. Jeremy, when you say "the other side" are saying race is irrelevant, it is Tony who is claiming "p.s For the umpteenth time its NOT, REPEAT NOT, about "colour" but the loss of "Culture" that is bemoaned..."
  12. if it's about culture Tony, that has ALWAYS changed and always will - speaking endlessly about immigration won't change that If I pluck a dandy from the 18th century and place him in London I doubt he would be very happy either with it's current state - but then I don't see you rushing to wear a tight-fitting tight and a ruff (or whatever they are called) It proves nothing apart from the fact that you are banging a very small drum very loudly to no effect other than to annoy people
  13. No need to be facetious Tony, no one is saying criminals shouldn't be caught But you are right that moaning about it won't help
  14. Tony for the love of all that's good and holy - stop dragging race into every goddam thread. You have plenty to say on it in the other thread - leave it there
  15. I think I mooted this a while back - I'm all in favour of it I initially thought it was one of those phases, but it doesn't seem to go away. And when you have peopl starting spoof threads you know something is up
  16. even I was raising an eyebrow at 5 minutes!
  17. Joom - was that meant sarcastically? If Goose Green to (say) William Rose is a hike, you have led a fairly sheltered life. I mean.. "a hike"??
  18. I have bough meat in Nevins the Irish butchers and also some meat in the Chinese supermarket next to HSBC Nevins is ok - the do chop up ribs in a more caribbean way which is good for jerk but the steaks etc were a bit "meh" The Chinese supermarket is awesome and sells things you can't buy anywhere else and is good for some fish I haven't been to any of the others - You fill a street with butchers and the place with smell - I have no problem with that so I'm no snob like Louisa, but a lot of the meat is cheap and therefore likely to be produced in shocking conditions
  19. This last week The Wrestler - 8.5/10 Ghost Dog - 8.5/10
  20. Not really Jimmy - you need a sky subscription watch their programmes online Coming soon to the xbox 360 is the ability to pay on demand to watch sky programmes without a dish - but that won't help you tonight - sorry
  21. And when you set your weekly budget at ?10 or whatever it was last year MM, how far do you think some individuals can "make arrangements" for all of these things. Especially given the fact that in your world the state wouldn't be funding all of the free schools for people on low budgets anyway?
  22. I'm increasingly reminded of teh old SoccerAm sketch which had a spoof Yorkshire news bulletin from t'70s which finished each report with the phrase "And another reason why.. Change Is NOT Good"
  23. Christy Moore's version of "Shine on you crazy diamond" from his new album sublime
  24. reported by people on here There is a difference
  25. I could be wrong MP but that doesn't read like one of your tongue in cheek posts so... Butchers do compete on price - many purchases work out cheaper than supermarkets "percieved" quality - what's with the perceived. Buy any cuts of pork, beef or whatever and do a blind test - note the lack of water ruining the meat. Even premium cuts in the supermarket have been in those horrible cellophane wraps for how long? But the main problem I have when people compare butchers with supermarkets is this: Butchers provide a butchering service. You can't go to any supermarket and have a chicken boned. You can't have your meat trimmed. You can't get bones for stock. You can't ask for thicker or thinner steaks. You can only buy pre-packed slabs of often-watery meat Surely all told that is plenty to differentiate than just "perceived quality"??
