  1. Cost of childcare is a big problem. But I think the costs are so incredibly high that it's unlikely to impact anyone earning close to the minimum wage or LWW.

    Foxes

If you feed foxes and squirrels, you may as well feed rats, mice and pigeons too.
  4. Unfortunately I don't think there is any political will to address affordability of housing. City Hall seem more interested in keeping prices high, in support of a construction industry which is increasingly concentrating on investment property.
  5. I think an introduction fee applies when an existing tenant continues to rent the proprety directly from the landlord, bypassing the original agent. So I would query why this applies to your daughter. Also, I'm not sure what the "secure fee" is, I would ask for clarification.

  7. Yeah I didn't really understand why you thought you'd need a membrane... I would have thought that a little airflow is a good thing, as long as you're keeping most of the heat in.
  8. I've worked at a few local councils and seen how inefficient they can be... would be surprised if the council could beat that margin.
  9. I think that's the issue for me... while I am basically in favour of a higher London minimum wage (and I don't think it would necessariy spell economic armageddon), I just think there are people out there who have a rougher deal than these guys.
  10. For a long time, I owned only black socks, which were near-identical. But then misguided parental christmas gifts ruined the system.
  11. Actually going on a bender isn't such a bad idea. I mean if you're going to feel like crap the next morning either way, you may as well go for it.
  12. I know I've said it before, but if it's along the lines of the Fullers model... i.e. a good four-star hotel with a proper pub downstairs and period character... everyone's a winner. Somewhere to get a decent pint, somewhere nice for friends/relatives to stay, a bit of decent grub, a few local jobs created. We shall see.
  13. Young children and and religion do not mix... we should be encouraging independent, questioning minds in our next generation. Not filling their heads with claptrap, with no rationale behind it other than "because I say so". Of course you have every right to be angry, but personally I'd be relieved to have been turned away.
  14. IMO, turning the Dog into a hotel (retaining a ground floor bar) is a good idea. The area needs a decent hotel. The upstairs function room wasn't really used much (as far as I know), and wasn't very nice. And the dining area at the back rarely seemed busy. As long as it's a proper pub on the ground floor, not just a small bland hotel bar.
  15. At the turn of the millenium, it was a cheap(ish) neighbourhood which seemed to have a higher than average concentration of actors, artists, musicians, etc so "vaguely bohemian" isn't exactly the worst description I can think of. But by 2002, it already felt like an area in the grips of gentrification.
  16. jenf Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Their Mariana Trench is a thing of great beauty. The Ivy House had this on tap last time I went in... really good stuff, but I may have slightly over-indulged..

  18. You should never encourage tech-illiterate (no offence) people to start putting HTML tags in their posts!
  19. Even though I find it hard to get behind the strike.. I don't think Picturehouse/Cineworld have acted particularly admirably here. It's very hard to believe they spelled out these redundancy plans at the negotiation table.
  20. jenf (and Bossman), if I was in your shoes I'd stock as many local beers as possible (Brick, Clarkshaws, Brockley, etc). IMO a nice big box of local beers makes a great xmas present!
  21. We caved in and paid cash, of course!! No problem regarding receipt, guarantee, and any issues with the build were fixed swiftly. Just doesn't feel great to be complicit in tax avoidance.

  23. V511 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I have no reference to go on but that feels > overstaffed Not sure about that... there will be a couple of shifts per day, as well as (presumably) part time workers.
  24. Perhaps Net Income per Employee would be a better measure of what a company can afford to pay, rather than absolute size/profit?
