Why are buses travelling more slowly? Blame Ocado....(and others).

Certainly less congestion with deliveries. Pollution... maybe. As for minicabs - yep, Uber is cheap enough to be a viable alternative to public transport, and there are huge numbers of minicabs on the road. Sorting out the disgusting state of our public transport would be a good start there... -
Some fair points there Rendel.

People need to take responsibility for their own actions. We all know sugary/fatty food is bad for you... fried chicken and snickers bars are quick and tasty, but if you eat them every day, the outcome is bloody obvious.

How can I cross London to get to the A1 but avoiding congestion charge areas
Jeremy replied to Cazz's topic in The Lounge
As others have said... MUCH better off heading NE onto M11 rather than directly north via A1M. I'd head through the Rotherhithe, then turn on Waze... -
Hong Hong is good for your typical British-style, old-school takeaway experience. Wuli Wuli is decent for Sichuan dishes or Noodles... if you order sweet & sour or crispy duck, you might be disappointed. Silk Rd if you're willing to go and collect. Nothing else I've tried locally...

East Dulwich Hotel - any info on what's happening?
Jeremy replied to Jo31's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Southwark did sell off a lot of the DKH... including the whole block over the Cost Cutter, and the derelict building on the corner of Bromar/Pytchley Rd (where five upmarket-ish houses now stand). But to be fair they're also using some of the empty space to build new council flats too. -
Wet paper around bottle in the sun - yep Wet paper around bottle in the freezer - don't bother

It's a myth - the wet paper doesn't add any benefit.

Not sure whether a successful local business need our charity/sanctimony, but yes their cakes and pastries are excellent. Although the past THREE times we've tried to go in, they've been shut with a notice on the door saying "opening 1hr late today" or whatever... so they should probably get some extra help, or publish more realistic opening times!

While other members are just desperate for paint, any paint (as long as it's not red).

Sounds good fox. Would add that the basic burger at Honest is ?8.50 including loads of chips... I reckon that's pretty decent value too. As it's right next to the station, you can call in advance and pick up a takeaway on your way home. Tommi's is overpriced at ?10.50 for the cheapest burger and fries, plus the ?2.50 delivery charge on top of that. Numbers - yep you must be right, I'm sure their actual restaurant is way better.

I'm not necessarily saying that re-nationalisation is some sort of silver bullet. But some privatisations work better than others... in the case of BA, or energy dereg, the element of competition brings benefits to the customers and pushes the providers to deliver better value. Not so with rail. I'm easily old enough to remember British Rail... I'm not kidding myself that things were better back then. But the current state is a mess. Massive investment is needed from the taxpayer regardless of ownership of the operators (network rail is still a public body after all).

There are plenty of examples of the privatisation/competition theory panning out well. But it failed spectacularly with trains. Either there's no actual alternative on the route you need, and you're stuck with whatever crap you're dealt (e.g. East Dulwich). Or the presence of alternative routes/fares causes confusion and people get slapped with ridiculous fines.

Tickets for parking across unused driveways

Abe_froeman Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A real life example: we have a neighbour with a > dropped curb and two cars. That means they take up > two spaces on the road at all times. Well if they didn't have the driveway, then they'd be taking up two spaces anyway. Besides, I'd suggest that two-car households in London are quite rare, so this seems a fairly unusual case. A more typical scenario - a household has a driveway and one car. Allowing visitors and tradespeople to park across their driveway is better for everyone. > Sometimes they park a car outside my house but I can't park in front of theirs under your rules. That's not "my rules", it's the law! If you're against off-street parking and dropped kerbs then fine, but that's a different conversation... -

I think residents should be able to make the decision if it's in front of their own house..
