Actually the portion of chips looks just right to me, Fox. Maybe I should get myself down there tonight...

Hur hur. He said "pentis".

The rumoured McGregor/Mayweather fight would have been boxing rules... so would not even be competitive. Amir Khan - the utter bell-end - is actually talking about competing in MMA. Despite no background whatsoever. Wish he's just shut his mouth and get on with his job.

I much prefer boxing... there's a certain purity and aesthetic value to the sweet science. And a greater strategic element (or at least, a different kind of strategic thinking). I consider boxing to be a sport, and UFC/MMA as a fight under controlled conditions. Of course the UFC fighters would be much more handy in a real fight, it would like asking a ping pong player to play Novak Djokovic at tennis.

Inevitably some people will drive to the new store. Hopefully most will be local and walk, but no point denying the bleeding obvious!

srisky - it's the latter.

Is that normal practice in chippies these days?

Well... it's v local to me, and the previous occupant (Eastern Delight) was really awful... just terrible, crappy food. So despite my slight misgivings, anything is an improvement. Good luck to them, and respect for taking a punt to expand their business.

Have to agree - reluctantly - about Emily's. He's a nice bloke who's been running the place for years... at one point he had grand plans about extending out the back to make it into a proper fish and chip restaurant... but the batter is just not crispy. Interesting to know the owner of Rose's used to own the Upland Road one. I thought the previous incarnation ("fish and chips and more") was acceptable but not great. I remember the Upland Rd chippy being really good around 2002-2005 ish.. CodFellas is OK. Refurb was just a few months back, I've not tried it since but am looking forward to trying the eat-in experience. My favourite used to be the "Dulwich Fryer" (near the station and football ground), before it changed owner around 3 years ago. It was always hard to resist walking home from the station without picking up F&C (with a couple of beers from the shop opposite). Master's Superfish is superb (but of course not local... unfortunately).

I quite liked ED deli. The service did seem slightly abrupt at times... always just assumed it was because they were rushed in there. But anyway, we have other deli places including Cheese Block, General Store (Peckham), "Organic Village", and even M&S might have a reasonable selection of bits of pieces. So I think we'll survive. Hope the new place does well.

I'm always confused at the judgemental attitude some people have towards ready meals and convenience food. Not good to eat them all the time, but very useful for those nights you get home from work late, or kids have been playing up, etc.
-
Yeah... I've done the gravy/stock/soup down the sink thing at least a couple of times!

I fail to see why the colour of the bin bags is relevant. Would you have mentioned the colour of the bags if they'd been white?

I think the main use for this shop will be people looking for quick convenient grub, slightly better than (or without walking to) Sainsbury's.

Not sure about another local Franco Manca! But rumour has it there are three new Peckham pizza places in the works...

I'd rather move to Croydon than Thornton Heath - it would be your local town centre anyway. Better transport into London, quicker drive out of London. Very up-and-coming in terms of eating, shopping, etc.

TBH I don't think Thornton Heath is all that bad by road, it's OK for the M23 and M25. Pretty close to Crystal Palace if you're yearning for a spot of gentrification. If you plan to regularly drive to North London, pretty much anywhere in outer south London is going to be a complete pain anyway.

Louisa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If the formula isn't broke, then why fix it? I realise that the curry house is a British tradition, and I love an onion bhaji, lamb madras, garlic naan and pint of Kingfisher as much as anyone, so I'm not complaining as such. But there are already so many restaurants doing that, it would be good to have more choice. People don't mind paying a bit extra (and travelling) for food that's a bit more interesting, so I would have thought it would be win/win. Michael Palaeologus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If you want truly authentic Indian food, you would > mostly be eating dhal, rice and nan. Personally I'm not hung up on authenticity. But at least cooking a regional style is one way of differentiating yourself from everyone else, and it becomes a bit of a destination as people are interested to try it (Ganapati and Silk Road are good examples). And also "authentic" needn't equate to simple/everyday food.
-
Yeah, one of the guys at work is always going on about Everest... really need to try it soon.

Yeah, I still fancy the typical Cantonese-type stuff sometimes.. sweet & sour pork, salt & chilli squid, etc. There are a handful of places that do it quite well, e.g. Royal China, Phoenix Palace, etc. And dim sum too (locally Hong Kong City is OK... and actually quite reminiscent of a typical neighbourhood HK joint). Silk Rd is v good, but to be fair Xinjiang is a completely different style of food so direct comparison to your favourite Chinese takeaway doesn't really stack up.

I saw E.T at the cinema. I must have been five years old. My mum cried at the end, which seemed pretty odd at the time. Sorry, not really the point of the thread I know. I was going to say that I'd never been to a football match, but then I remembered that I was once forced to watch Hertha Berlin on a stag weekend...
