It's the same bubbly batter-like pastry the apple pie comes in, but with mincemeat and custard filling. It's quite something.

  5. I think pretty much everyone by now knows the pros and cons of pink burgers, no point going over it all again here. If you want to be that little bit safer, order it well done. It will be tougher and dryer. Your call.
  6. Lou, if you're going to get your burger well done, then don't even bother going to ML. You'll be wasting your time and money. You've obviously already made your mind up about the place anyway.
  7. Yes, the Tivo box is a bunch of crap. Very, very unresponsive interface/apps. Don't really watch much broadcast TV these days anyway. I think I'd be better off with a Fire TV and a broadband-only package.
  8. Huh. I did actually get a takeaway from there the other day, and enjoyed it. So nur. I kind of figure that any takeaway worth eating is going to cost at least a tenner a head anyway. The price of the chips does annoy me a bit though. Surely they're just bog standard skinny fries... the type that McD's charges ?1 for?

I'm up for trying xoco some time, but it still all sounds so bonkers... olives/hummus/etc before a curry, etc. The new Ali Baba place (https://twitter.com/alibabajuice) seems to have opened now... was busy-ish last night. Again, it seems like an odd combo... juice bar, cocktail bar, caf?, restaurant. But I'm sure will do well with the burgeoning hipster crowd.

The K&W "restaurant" area is at the back. They certainly never used to do falafel (although haven't been in there for a few years now). > Far fresher and healthier than anything in Subway. Subway... definitely not healthy, but when you look at the fast food outlets you'd realistically pitch it against, I certainly don't think it's any worse. It is what it is.
  11. Like Quidditch says... any opportunity to escape the tedium of the corporate environment would be most welcome, but I would certainly want something else to give me goals, and to replace the (occasional) satisfaction which comes from working on something and doing it well. And earn a bit of cash so I wasn't always feeling like I was blowing my savings. But as it is... will probably be paying off the mortgage until I'm 60 (even later than that if we ever want to upsize house or move somewhere with better schools).

A shish, potentially. But not a doner, no way. K&W don't do falafel. ontheedge Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Remember reading subway food is on one of the > worst type of foods to eat lists, ranks way lower > than McDonalds source?

DulwichBorn&Bred Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I can't see it succeeding personally given all the other tastier > places to eat on the lane with our cafes and bakeries I think you're kind of missing the point. It's not competing with Boulangerie Jade or Brick House... it's more of an alternative to fried chicken or a kebab.
  14. I have some blackcurrants in the freezer I picked from the garden earlier in the year... will pop some of those into the crumble. This is not, of course, even vaguely healthy. But at least it should be seasonal and cheap. Pear and blue cheese salad tonight, I think. If anyone wants a few pears, PM me...
  15. It's borderline junk food, but am not averse to the occasional Subway as a bit of a guilty pleasure.
  16. Yep I am certainly familiar with poached pears, but I don't find them particularly exciting. Besides, they're probably too ripe now, and are likely to fall apart when cooked. I have about 25 of them sitting on my worktop. Crumble was my original plan...
  17. lavender27 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Apple Fritters Sounds good. I have a load of pears from the garden which are turning over-ripe and I don't have a hope of eating. Maybe a huge pile of pear fritters is the way forward.
  18. Looks like a bot advertising a Canadian plumbing firm. But anyway... tenants should take basic steps (e.g. unblocker liquid ), then call landlord/agent. If they don't fix it, move out.
  19. I can see both Sadiq and Chuka throwing their hats into the ring after the next GE. Corbyn will be an old man in 2025.

No... I can agree it disadvantages single parents (as someone pointed out earlier). But for two-parent families, childcare duties are their own business. There's no reason it needs to be the mother who leaves work at 5pm to look after the kids.
  21. Certainly looks as though it was subjected to a hefty dose of media spin! So yeah maybe I got the wrong end of the stick on that one. Still don't agree with him though - it's not a sexual discrimination issue as such.
  22. Surely Saffron has already nailed it?
  23. If a family choose to follow traditional gender roles, that's their business. Not appropriate for JC (and lobbyists) to get involved.
  24. rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > for a role of the state in the provision of key public services For me, it comes down to whether it benefits the public. In the case of rail, we're not feeling any benefits of competition, and I'm not ideologically averse to nationalisation (of course, provided they do a better job and provide better value) But then with things like energy.. deregulation and privatisation have worked OK. I do not understand why the government would want to take a controlling interest in energy suppliers, etc. What's in it for us?? It's a level of meddling that I fundamentally disagree with. And then he starts saying frankly bat-shit-crazy stuff like after work social events should be forbidden... and I start to imagine some sort of dystopian nightmare...
