  1. We went in the summer, just for a couple of nights. But for eating and "independent designer shops", I'd say the "So-Fo" area is the place to head to. Lots of little shops, restaurants, hipster coffee places, etc. Everything was bloody expensive, even before the pound plummeted! We ended up cooking a couple of meals in the apartment as everything is so expensive (and the food's not as appealing as most other European cities anyway IMO). If you want to buy beer/wine to drink at home, forget the supermarket or corner shop, you'll need to locate the nearest "Systembolaget" (state-ran booze shop).

I'm not totally convinced about the kitchen extension though, especially not when you add up the true cost of getting it done to a good standard. We're actually planning one at the moment, but we are planning on staying put for quite a long time - I'm not convinced we'll make money from it, but that's not why we're doing it.
  3. Herne hilly, you're wrong about Franco Manca. Pizzas are from ?6-?7, it's one of the cheapest places to eat out. If you can afford Harvester you can afford FM. I think Subway would probably be reasonably popular though.. early morning bacon butty and coffee... quick lunch on the go.. pre (or post) pub filler. Fast food can serve a purpose. Besides, if someone likes Subway, that's their own business.

The obvious answer is that it depends whether the common usage is derogatory or not. Aussie, Kiwi, Limey, etc - OK. The first two you mention - almost always used as an insult and clearly not OK. Frog - somewhere in between. You'd need to judge your audience. OK if you know it will be taken in jest.

You might get your money back when you sell, but not much more. You have to really want it, and plan to stay there many years to enjoy it. Also bear in mind that you'll be living in a building site, without a kitchen, for many months.

  9. Don't think it works quite like that, RD.

  11. Yep sounds cheap to me. Must have been exc VAT.

  13. I don't get it... If shop owners starting hanging neon signs precariously hanging 2m over the road, and someone said "Lordship Lane is starting to resemble Hong Kong".. would that be racist? If there was a row of empty shops, and someone said "Lordship Lane is starting to resemble Hartlepool". Would that be racist?

  16. If I was booking a flight and had the choice between transferring within the same airport, or getting on a train for half an hour to another airport, I know which one I'd choose! Even if check-in and baggage were somehow miraculously handled seamlessly (they wouldn't be), it introduces new possibilities for your trip to go disastrously wrong. I'm just not convinced anyone would find it an attractive option. I totally get the arguments against... emissions, impact on local area (noise, homes, greenbelt), flight paths over London, etc. But from a perspective of capacity and economy, it seems to add up.
  17. The website has never worked for me at all. http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk:8190/online-applications/ won't load and just times out. Anyone else? (The map view works better, but is very clunky and dated)
  18. The Scandinavians are a pretty liberal bunch, right? Time to get out that little black dress?
  19. Never had a problem with Dulwich DIY.. aesthetically, or in terms of getting past on the pavement. But racism... come on, that's just daft, even by EDF standards...
  20. I'm gonna defend Jenny here. While I'm not convinced there's a clear cut income division (plenty of well-to-do home county types will have voted 'leave', as well as plenty of business-savvy people who stood to benefit), the article specifically highlights a town where it is generally accepted that wages have been kept low due to availability of cheap EU labour. So if these people are worse off in the medium term due to the leave vote, then yes I agree there's a certain irony in that. I also agree with Robbin that patronising attitudes towards leave voters (blanket accusations of racism and parochial attitude) probably just hardened their resolve.
  21. My gut reaction was that it was the right decision. They weren't being asked to endorse the message, just reproduce it on a cake. A victory for common sense over prejudice and superstition. But it does beg a wider question - should a print facility, sign fabricator, advertising company, or indeed a baker be obliged to accept any order within certain parameters (e.g. it's legal, not intrinsically offensive, etc)?

Definitely still there. I think it's a small chain. I bloody love Indian sweets, even if they sometimes tend towards sickly-sweet.

Indeed - and they may even be amenable to soul DJs on other nights too. I'd come along... not a soul boffin by any stretch, but I do enjoy a bit of Northern Soul & Motown.
