But surely his campaign showed many echoes of fascism... the cult of personality, racism, excessive nationalism/patriotism. Threats to imprison his rival (and "jokes" about assassination) demonstrate a contempt for democracy. It's an understandable comparison.

When they (eventually) get to the stage that they're driving unsupervised, we'll have millions of automated Uber-bots zipping around... private car ownership in cities will plummet.

BMW drivers do seem particularly bad... I don't know why, but dickheads seem attracted to BMWs. Same applies to Range Rovers and Porsche Cayenne. adonirum Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > where do Jags and Volvos fit into your hierarchical grading system? Volvo - worthy types who want it to be known that they don't flash their cash, and probably claim to be fans of the Nordic economic model Jaguar - very old men

I've always liked him, yes he comes across as a bit grouchy sometimes, but I warm to that sort of straightforward unpretentiousness much more than I do to someone like Federer, with his flowing locks and absurd monogrammed costumes. And he's a fantastic player to watch, a "battler" who seems to chase down every ball. I have no problem with him representing Britain - although I guess the flag-bearer perhaps seems a little incongruous.

Yeah I don't think there's a need for new infrastructure, the cars will be self-guiding based on image recognition and motion detection. You won't need to ban manually driven vehicles, but there may be financial incentives/penalties... e.g. vehicle tax, "congestion charges", insurance premiums, etc.. market forces would ensure that eventually almost all new cars have a self-driving facility. I can certainly imagine a situation where one's insurance might be voided if you're in an accident and it transpires that you've turned off the autopilot. Bit of a shame in some ways, as I do enjoy driving (outside of London at least), but the safety advantages will eventually be undeniable. Traffic optimisation is a separate topic really. But with self-driving cars relaying their progress back to a server (similar to how Waze works already), efficient routing would seem very feasible, even with a mixture of self-driving and manually-driven cars on the road.

Yeah frightening in some ways, but surely inevitable? It is only a matter of time before the technology is safer than a human driver.

EDT - what others said, good beer, nice staff, nice atmosphere, nice mix of people. Has always been my favourite pub in ED. Also... Brick Brewery and Four Quarters in Peckham. Blackbird bakery and Boulangerie Jade for both selling amazing cakes. "Fabulous Ice Fires" for the best ice cream in South London. Rye Books - great for kids and all round nice people. Caf? Viva for breakfast, and Miss Tapas next door for dinner. Ganapati, for making my parents actually want to visit.

Car wheels stolen for the 2nd time
Jeremy replied to iainhagger's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
pop9770 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Best way to avoid this is smash your wheels up on > curbs they'll be safe then :( Yeah that's our tactic too. If the OP wants, I'm sure "a certain member of my household" will be happy to lend their services for a day. Nobody will ever want to steal your wheels again. -
They appear to have two websites : https://www.dulwichdentalclinic.co.uk and https://www.dulwichdentaloffice.com... I know it all looks a bit shoddy, but I am a satisfied customer.. don't let the confused internet presence put you off.

We need to remember that nothing's really happened yet! There's no point trying to draw any conclusions until we find out what sort of trade deal we're going to get with the EU.

The Daily Mail being nice about Peckham
Jeremy replied to Louisa's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Wishing Well - indeed like the CPT - was a perfectly good pub, but rarely seemed busy. The Victoria Inn (previous incarnation) was a good spot for lunch with kids (despite the revolting "play room"), but for going out drinking in the evening, it was never my first choice. -
Get a room, guys.

The Daily Mail being nice about Peckham
Jeremy replied to Louisa's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Did they pay for that "review"? ?90 a night.. sounds a bit steep for a pretty basic room in Peckham. It used to be a lot cheaper. But what do I know. Good that they've doing breakfast now, though. -
Could always get the subscription yourself, and burn the show onto a DVD for him. A bit of a hassle though.

Is it unethical to approach vendor to check if they received my offer?
Jeremy replied to PINKSHARK78's topic in The Lounge
It seems quite unlikely that the agent is really pushing for a higher offer. If they're on, say, 1% commission, than an extra 10K is nothing to them. If anyone is holding out for a better offer, I'd think it would probably be the vendor. I don't think it's "unethical" to drop a note through the vendor's door, but it's unlikely to get you anywhere, and could sour your relationship with the agent. -
Mick Mac Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think Peter Luger is in Brooklyn but yes > recognised as the best. Yep it's in Brooklyn, but only just on the other side of the bridge... very short journey from downtown. Besides, Williamsburg is firmly on the tourist trail these days anyway. > I went to Wolfgang's on Park Avenue and it is the best steak I have ever had, We went there too.. in terms of steak there's little to choose between the two. PL has a more rustic "beer hall" like vibe. Wolfgang's feels a little more upmarket, and has a better choice of starters, etc.

IMO if you want a blow-out meal in NYC, it has to be steak. Peter Luger is the obvious choice, but there are other good ones too...

We (and importantly our daughter) like Little Clipper. But agree that the response above is off-key, everyone has the right to post feedback on here, would have been better to invite them back and try to turn it around. Oh well.

I like the sound of this 1940's "short back and sides" barber. I might try him... if he doesn't ask me what team I support, or where I'm going on holiday, then even better.

Do they still sell beer? The option of booze made it a great spot for dads to take the kids in the afternoon. Apart from that - I had no great love for it really. The service was painfully slow.

Good food that travels really badly via Deliveroo....
Jeremy replied to DovertheRoad's topic in The Lounge
Actually we had ML last night. Burgers were fine but fries were strangley chewy (and I'm not sure that's entirely down to the delivery either!). Honest Burgers still has the edge for me but for some reason it wasn't available on Deliveroo last night.... -

Pizza or anything deep fried suffers a bit. Curry works. Not found burgers too bad.
