  1. I kind of get Huguenot's point, in that if there is a future in manufacturing in the UK, it is in niche/innovative/low-volume products... not vast quantities of low-cost consumer goods.
  2. Irish Banking... whatever next?
  3. Crossing Barry Road is difficult... visibility is terrible, so you sometimes have no choice but to edge out into the road. Obviously you have to do this very slowly, so you don't suddenly pop out in front of someone. But it would help a lot if people didn't drive so fast along Barry Road.
  4. Worth also noting that when it comes to paying staff, keeping the company (our investment) afloat is more important than making a political statement or keeping the tabloids happy.
  5. What do you mean, "we won't get that money back"? In the majority of cases, it wasn't "ours" in the first place. The banks which have been bailed out have already slashed bonuses (and headcount). And let's not forget the 2010 bonus tax... and income tax on top of that... actually maybe we did "get it back" after all...
  6. If you are sitting there shivering in gloves and hats, I don't think a few curtains will really improve things enough. Sorry to state the obvious, but why not move somewhere else? No matter how much you like the flat, it's not worth it if you're freezing cold for half of the year.
  7. What an insightful post, Jah. It's as if people have forgotten all about it. Although... I would point out that Lloyds and RBS will not be paying huge bonuses this year - partly due to political pressure, partly because business is still tough. In fact, RBS have lost staff precisely because bonuses have been slashed. That's on top of making thousands of people redundant and selling hundreds of branches. I could also point out that in general, this is going to be far from a bumper bonus year in the City. I could also remind you that the banks did not run away with tax payers' money. The government took a lot of equity in return, and will - at some point - actually make a profit from these shares.

  9. It is in East Dulwich. The Vale Bar 31-33 Grove Vale, London, SE22 8EQ East Dulwich Station, Sainsbury's, and DHFC are also in East Dulwich. The border is clearly visible on the map.

  11. I think the original post may have been a wind-up, but strangely there seems to be several serious posters backing her up. Some people seem to think that East Dulwich is something it's not. And others want to turn it into something it's not. And others cannot accept that not everyone in the area has disposable income. Clapham and Fulham both have Iceland stores, by the way. So if those are the areas people aspire to... perhaps you're closer than you thought!

  13. Return the parcel to the sender. This isn't your responsibility.
  14. Surely if you believe in Heaven and all that, the survival instinct would not be as strong?
  15. Why did you visit these bars (assuming you really did)...
  16. The local market did indeed drop... it recovered a bit, but the lower end is still down from the peak. A bit of a drop is probably a good thing though.
  17. Emerson, I don't think you can win this one.

  20. malumbu, most of the events you list above hadn't actually sold out - this one had. Did you expect the promoter to let in everyone who didn't have a ticket, or just you? Also bear in mind that Sue and co don't do this for money, they do it for the music... and I'm sure they don't want to risk putting their gigs in jeopardy by exceeding the venue's capacity.

I don't see it that way. You don't have to attend a specialist religious school if you (or your parents) are religious. There are plenty of other ways to get your religious fix. In fact, I would say that religious teachings are best done outside of school... it shouldn't interfere with mainstream education. It would be healthier to have a division between the two. silverfox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > However, if parents believe the mumbo-jumbo why is that wrong? The answer's in the question... the parents believe it. Is that a good reason to indoctrinate the children too? To teach mythology and tales of the supernatural as if it were fact - alongside maths, science and languages?
  22. KK, I don't think that's how it works... say for instance, Wlad got himself into a position as the mandatory challenger for Vitali's WBC belt. Wlad would not be obliged to take the fight if he didn't want it. Also, all the bodies have their own rakings - your logic implies some sort of cooperation between them, which simply doesn't exist. Wlad vs Chisora is every bit as meaningless as Vitali vs Sosnowski or Haye vs Harrison. But it is not uncommon for fighters to take the occasional "tune up" bout in between the genuine contenders. It is not a new thing, and it's not exclusive to the heavyweights. Here's hoping that Wlad and Haye take on more dangerous challengers next time, i.e. each other.
  23. If people want to practise mumbo-jumbo and mythology that's fine with me, but it absolutely should not be intertwined with the education system. It's completely, utterly wrong. The current situation - whereby parents pretend to believe the aforementioned mumbo-jumbo in order to get their children into the best performing schools - is absurb on every level.
