  1. A lot of these shops must rely on passing trade. I would rarely (maybe never) go out of my way to go to a shop like ed or Roullier White, but if I'm walking past I might take a look inside, and maybe even buy something. So I think being mixed up a bit works in their favour.

  3. Perhaps SeanMacGabhann's over-optimistic walking estimates are rubbing off on me...
  4. Seriously, walking from Goose Green to say, William Rose or the top of Northcross road probably takes 5 minutes.
  5. re Crossings - mattham, JohnL, I totally agree with both of you, that drivers always need to stop for pedestrians at a crossing, or if a pedestrian is already in the road. But this is different to the earlier blanket statement of "pedestrian always has right of way on our roads". This is untrue, and this assumption can lead to dangerous and irresponsible behaviour (i.e. pedestrians stepping out into a busy road and expecting/forcing cars to stop for them). re lights - Beardy, to be honest I don't think you realise how complex traffic light design/phasing is. Especially in this city with our ancient road network, which weaves around, merges and diverges chaotically. Throw in bus lanes and pedestrian crossings... there's no way you can keep everyone happy.
  6. matthew123 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > "watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into > which you are turning. If they have started to > cross they have priority, so give way" Thanks for clarifying. This makes perfect sense, as the pedestrian may not have been able to see the vehicle when they started crossing. However, this is a specific scenario... as thebeard is saying (I think), if pedestrians always had right of way, we'd have no need for zebra crossings!
  7. Hi Matthew, please could you tell me the source of this information, as I believe it is incorrect. Pedestrians have right of way on pedestrian crossings, not on the road in general. The road is for vehicles, the pavement is for pedestrians. You are right, of course it is dangerous when drivers drive too fast, not paying attention to pedestrians. But it is also dangerous (and stupid) for pedestrians to walk out into the road assuming traffic will stop for them.
  8. matthew123 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 1) To re-emphasise to poor drivers that > pedestrians have priority on those minor junctions Isn't it the norm to have a pedestrian crossing, when pedestrians have priority?

  10. Over the last few days... Delicatessen Ip Man Hackers (makes War Games look like a documentary) Milk
  11. Indeed it could, one of the guys I work with thinks this is the case.
  12. To be frank I disagree with a lot of what TLS has said here... but it is a mistake to confuse it with racism. We're discussing social and cultural issues, not whether one race is superior to another.
  13. beaver14uk... fair points, but I have been on buses where they did not go as far as the displayed destination, and no "transfer ticket" has been offered. Instead, the driver ignored a load of angry passengers, then drove off at full tilt. Although I'm sure this type of thing happens rarely, it is nevertheless a reality and a flaw in the system.
  14. There is no shame in doing what you thought was the right thing.
  15. It sounds like you actually admire the US healthcare system!
  16. It is grossly unfair that you have to pay twice because the driver (or operator) decides to stop prematurely. It is also unfair that you have to pay twice if you need to change buses... it's not your fault that a direct route is not available. The lib dems proposal sounds reasonable to me.
  17. johnnyc - I got exactly the same thing today in the City, it must have been the same bloke. The wound looked nasty and deep, but the blood round it was dark and dried... it looked like it had been re-opened on purpose. He was asking for a taxi fare to Homerton Hospital. I suggested he walked to Barts instead - I started to give him directions but he just ignored me and walked off. Edited to say - according to the guys in the office, he is quite well known round these parts. So either it is a wound which he never allows to heal, or it is just makeup.
  18. I always thought that the "fresh meat counter" was pretty much the same thing as the packaged stuff... just taken out of the wrapper before they put it on display.
  19. Sean and EDmummy are right, this in no way indicates that more crimes are actually taking place. Still, I think it's good to remind people that these things happen, and to be vigilant.
  20. Woof, if you eat at Wong Kei - and actually choose to go again - you deserve all the abuse they throw at you!
  21. "sweet and sour chicken hong kong style" is an oxymoron!
  22. Not everyone has the money, time or inclination to join you and *Bob* on your wonderful antique hunts (although I'm sure you have a super-fun time).
