Waitrose.........wait for it.......are looking at "Dulwich"
Jeremy replied to Mick Mac's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Gubodge, I agree that we should have options for different budgets. -
Stop being such snobs!! Perhaps the original poster already has a load of basic Ikea stuff (like me) and just wants one or two slightly better bits of furniture which are in a similarly plain style? Not everyone can afford to furnish their whole home with "proper old furniture". Perhaps they don't want to spend every spare weekend hunting around for this stuff. Some of us have hobbies which don't involve antique-hunting. Perhaps they are busy, and just want to order something online, and have it arrive on a Saturday morning with no hassle (maybe HNHY has one of those "job" things?) Perhaps they prefer modern furniture. (the second one is better)

I agree that there's not really a need for another supermarket. I wouldn't lose any sleep of Somerfield were to go, I don't really see what sector of the market they cater for... perhaps people in need of bog roll who don't drive? -
Personally I have never really felt such a strong association with a place that I would get so upset if it changed (and still stay there regardless). I think - with respect - that it's a slightly outdated concept, because people move around so much more these days. People move between the city, suburbs and countryside to suit their lifestyles. People move overseas for work or for new experiences. The community spirit Tony remembers from his youth doesn't really exist anymore, populations are transient, and it's not just because of immigration.

People don't commit suicide because their home town has changed. Tony, I put it to you that this person was mentally ill. What is your proposed solution to counteract the decline of british culture, and ensure the preservation of communities?
-
I really don't think it's true white British people and their culture have become almost extinct. Sure there are pockets which are largely inhabited by certain ethnic groups, but this "herding" is human nature. It is also inevitable that this occurs in the big cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester where there are more employment opportunities. But I think Tony is overstating the issue - I mean are there any other white people on this forum who feel as though they are in a minority? I certainly don't. I can understand why some people may perhaps feel disillusioned about changes in their neighbourhood... I am not totally unsympathetic to Tony's point. But personally I feel that we have gained more than we have lost, through the spread of other cultures onto our shores. The whole WWII thing is a red herring, nobody was fighting to retain white british culture, it was to stop the spread of a totalitarian dictatorship and ethnic cleansing. And I think it's a bit of a cheap shot to drag it into the debate.

Marks and Spencers the Tony Blair of the food world !
Jeremy replied to AllforNun's topic in The Lounge
Yes, home cooked food is better and usually more healthy. But... - Not everyone has the time or inclination to cook a proper meal every day - It would presumably be open after people get home from work - unlike the local shops, which most of us can really only visit once a week. Personally I'm happy with what we've got, but I can see how some people may find it useful. -
East Dulwich - Featured in 'The Times'!!
Jeremy replied to *Bob*'s topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh for christs sake, that article opitimises lazy journalism! Has this person even been to East Dulwich? Don't they realise that it's the best place ever? WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM!! -
Did the culprit have a suitcase?

I heard it was drugs. Apparently the suspect disguises himself as a clown.

I think it's fair to say that Abeno is NOT the best japanese restaurant in London! Although I agree that okonamiyaki are tasty (as discussed in another thread), it is basically Japanese fast food. The thing is, everyone has their own favourite which they swear is the best. They have inevitably either been to Japan, or knows someone who has been to Japan, or has a Japanese colleague... which makes them an expert and undoubtedly correct. If this thread carries on much longer, we'll probably cover every Japanese restaurant in London. (for what it's worth, our favourite Japanese restaurant is fully booked every night of the week, so it looks like that particular "secret" is already out. must... try... harder...)

I am naive to the workings of the legal system. If she pleads guilty, do the jury still have a part to play?

This indicates that the sign is in the wrong place! Check out the road signs heading up the hill... St Francis Road, Quorn Road, Edgar Kail Way... all SE22. -

Apologies for answering on his behalf... but I seem to recall he has a japanese wife. I think "shu kurimu" is a japanese pronounciation of "choux cream"... cream filled choux buns are very popular in Asia (one of the chains, "Beard Papa" has a store on Oxford Street). I imagine SKS is a fan of these.

I didn't mean to *call* you a snob, just pointing out that that's how you may have come across. I thought you were saying that this school belongs in Peckham instead of East Dulwich, indicating that you have a narrow minded view of residents in both postcodes. But it seems as though I misunderstood, in which case I apologise. -

The same quality of state education should be available everywhere, in my opinion. You same to feel otherwise, when you say that this school should be in Peckham instead, or whatever. -
