Good local ballet class - goose green centre
Cora replied to Tara's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My boys have been doing street dance with miss Danni for about a year now and decided to have a go at the ballet at 4pm Tues. After a free trial they've both decided to go on for the three week trial. Really pleased they're having the chance to expand their interest in dance..Anyone out there with boys who might be interested they'll have some male company! (And can always beef it up with some streetdance at 5pm afterwards!) -
Polly D is Dalmain near you? Think that's got a good reputation...Kelvin Grve also looked like it was up and coming a few years back...

Bessemer Grange - Turning away nannies
Cora replied to espolea's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This is a result of the new surestart priorities I think. My understanding is that they are no longer focusing on supporting all under fives but instead priority groups from the surrounding communities. My guess is that if you can afford a nanny your child is not on the governments priority list. A policy shift across surestart and huge shame for all families of under fives whatever their background and needs. -
What is the reason behind enforcing a strict school uniform? Are school shoes better for them than trainers? If so, fine but if not why is the school getting hot under the collar? Do log'd polo's produce smarter, happier children - no. So what's the point? I can understand them saying logo'd uniform needed for school trips so it's easier to recognise the group but apart from that I would feel very annoyed that this is the sort of thing a school focuses on. Pointless.

I think if a child goes to the teacher for support after grazing their knee then they should receive help. As a parent I would not be particularly worried about it getting infected but I do think it's very important that a child in the playground feels like they will get support if they go to an adult with a problem. Dismissing problems early on means a child is less likely to go back with a bigger issue. It's about building trust.

After recommendation on here went to Charles at Hunter and Paine on Lordship Lane for my 5yr old. He was fantastic both at explaining to me what was going on and keeping my son involved and at ease. Really impressed and a check-up is free on the nhs for children.

Being on of the poorest councils in London I imagine Tower Hamlets got large injections of money into their library services during the last government?...that's just a guess. Peckham library has got lots more going on I think, again probably because it attracted central funding targeting more deprived areas...I'm guessing Dulwich is/was not a priority when funding comes up.

Training to be a baby swimming instructor
Cora replied to susyp's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you are looking to volunteer to get experience I would contact schools. Most of them take kids for lessons locally and because a whole class is being taught at the same time which is hard with different levels there would probably be scope for you to help with the class or take the good or a fearful swimmer and do your own mini class with them or you could offer to take people's kids swimming on the forum (could even earn some money!). As I am sure you know it is hard to get lessons locally so people might be delighted to have you take their kids swimming and teach them what you know? You would need to get CRB checked of course. Another thought is to contact the Albrighton Centre Youth Club. They take kids swimming every week and again you could volunteer your skills there for experience. Sorry have just re-read your post and realised you say BABY and no longer ED but I am guessing you would need to learn to teach at all levels? Good luck. -
and you can apply to as many school nurseries as you like giving yourself more chance of getting a place somewhere.

Surely walls are not built to be whacked weekly by full wheelie bins?!
-
Happened to us too, a few months ago....was also **** off - just the way there is no admission, apology, compensation, just a mess left. They shouldn't be touching the walls if they are wheeling the bin.

Great tip. How long was the train journey?

Think you can stay with kings as it is a foundation hospital which I think means it doesn't serve on catchment area - my understanding is that you can stay with them even if you move. Also you can travel to the hospital, depending on how quickly your labour is progressing but quite stressful to know you have a journey ahead....Is there a friend you could travel up to the moment your labour starts so that you are nearer by for when you are far enough gone to be admitted?

Dulwich Hamlet Multi-Sports Academy - any good?
Cora replied to Sambeitou's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yep, my 7yr old has done a few and enjoyed them. -
How do you know most ED residents watch films on their tablet or handheld? I think nappies and cinema go well. I am more interested in going to the cinema than before I had kids as I no longer have the stamina to regularly go for full on nights out. I am more than happy to pop out locally to see a film without my other half therefore not costing me anything in babysitting but giving me a break...and for those who don't have the other half to cover the kids, but have friends happy to help out it's a shorter sit than having to go elsewhere. Easier for me to get friends to sit while we pop to a film than go off into town.

I would go for a childminder until at least 2 but do a lot of research to find the right one. Recommendations, OFSTED site, Southwark council site and Simply Childcare magazine are a start.

If you are free this afternoon some of the parents are gardening in the school's wildlife garden opposite the school. Your son could run around while you ask all the questions you like. They will be more than happy to see you. It's a great school, I have two son's there, in Reception and year two. Feel free to pm any other questions. Is the P4 any good for you? That goes close to the school.

Just dropped my sons off (5 + 7yrs) to learn how to bath a baby and change nappies.....Life skills!!

If he's willing to work for free I would get him 'to dream'. This is one of the few times in his life when he could think what his dream job would be and contact suitable organisations/companies asking to shadow someone/help out. I always wondered what an administrator in a theatre did. I contacted an administrator at the Rsc saying that I would love to learn more about her job in exchange for helping out with whatever menial stuff I could. I had a great time and we're still friends 15yrs on. If not, he would be a godsend (although CRB check may be needed) for a community summer play scheme. My son goes to the one at the church on Red Post Hill for two weeks in the summer. They are all volunteers doing it to support local children in the community. The Albrighton also do summer schemes for the kids and runs on volunteers. It's worth talking to Steve or Jackie there. If he prefers older people Dulwich Helpline are always looking for volunteers for various things. Again, if he likes reading I used to read regularly to a lady who was elderly and blind. I am sure they could match his interests with a need/project. Hooray for him....hope he enjoys his summer

What a sad ending :( -
Not an idiot...well done for having the guts to say something...I always sit there festering and spend the rest of the day wishing I had said something. You can't win! Although she didn't seem like she would change her behaviour after your spat I'm sure she won't want to go through that again and may think twice before letting her dog in again?
