  1. I guess we could pass that logic onto all the deprived folk who shop at Iceland eh Sean? Last thing I heard was Iceland and Morrisons along with Lidl and Netto were the only stores performing well at this time. Says it all. Bring on the 50 piece chicken buffet I say ;-) Louisa.
  2. Or maybe Bromley could annexe the government and do everyone a favour eh? Sean how many of you will be there this evening? Louisa.
  3. ronniemama, dont start saying you like Iceland on here, you are considered some sort of freak by most of these people. They all seem to think everyone is on a 30k+ wage and able to shop in all the independents because its ethical or some other dodgy reason. Louisa.
  4. Sean, working class people want variety just as everyone else does, but considering this particular thread is about the ridiculous words of a politician, my comments about the lack of variety along LL and the damage this does to the deprived communities who cannot afford to shop in the likes of JoJomamanbebe et al are what particuarly concern me. At least in places like the Walworth Road and Camberwell the shops are more reflective of the local population and go some way to serving the vast majority of the community. Here in ED the reverse is apparant. Someone on a restricted income who cannot or will not travel far has limited resources in ED compared to other parts of Southwark. Why is it when higher income brackets decide its ok to move postcode the shops can move with them and the effect this has on the settled population is not considered. Harman obviously thinks because 20 or 30% of ED is now relatively wealthy, the working classes should be neglected because there are even more poor people down in Walworth and Camberwell. It seems just the most ridiculous thing to say?. Surely this deprives settled populations of something? Why should I have to travel all the way to Bromley just because the likes of White Stuff and other overpriced places want to move in and restrict my shopping choices? I agree LL cannot accomodate big stores, but Peckham equally restricts a huge chunk of the population too. Huguenot, obviously not you eh? Louisa.
  5. Before we "work this", how about you answer the responses I have given you in respect of some of the apparant contradictions you suggest I make based on what I say here. ED does not have the space for any of the above stores you mention (with the exeption of a Simply Food), but it does seem a little bizarre that in under a decade the vast majority of shops now only seem to reflect a small proportion of the local population. If anything, working class people are even more deprived in an compared to Peckham because many are elderly and cannot walk the distance to Peckham or be able to catch the bus. Louisa.
  6. Yes Devon is preferable for living in later life as many rural locations are for people considering retirement or moving out of the big city in later years. As for my class, since when were working class people excluded from Devon? Have you ever been to Barnstaple or Ilfracome? People on here who know Devon will know EXACTLY what I am talking about. What is your point? Bromley is preferable for shopping because it has a shopping centre that suites my needs, it has variety, just as Peckham used to have, unlike ED which seems almost exclusively aimed at one small section of the local population who moved in within the last decade. What is your point here? M&S is a decent shop, I have always liked M&S and that is in no way reflective of class. Let us not forget that the so called deprived Walworth Road has an M&S unlike the over qualified ED. Again what exactly is your point? This Labour government has isolated working class communities for years, the Peckham example is a fantastic one whilst we are on that. Harriet Harman suggests certain areas deserve investment over others, from what I see all the EU cash and government funds stuck into that area have created nothing for local people. The shopping centre remains s*it, and the place still stinks. Where has all this wonderful cash gone? All on a new library? (I think not). This woman has the damn right cheek to turn around from the comfort of her lovely salary and suggest some deprived communities are more deserving than others, what a f*cking cheek (pardon my French). I have no respect for her or any politician who sits up on their high horse making ridiculous comments about things they do not understand. Louisa.
  7. Harriet Harman really should just keep her mouth shut to be frank. The amount of money this government have pumped into supposedly deprived areas like Peckham and what is there to show for it? ED has just as many deprived families as any part of Southwark, just because the number of shops along NCR or LL no longer reflect the population does not mean that somehow we are now Kensington and Chelsea. The same goes for Bromley, it is NOT a wealthy part of town exclusively, the large council estate at Grove Park in Bromley has been left to ruin for years and no one from government has helped, at least Camberwell and Peckham get some cash, even if it does nothing at all. Why not just keep your mouth shut in future I say to politicians of all colours, especially someone who has been involved in a government which has done nothing but isolate and put off the genuine working class vote for the best part of the two decades. Louisa.
  8. Waitrose ARE NOT considering a move to ED, lets put a bag over that rumour before it escalates further, I know what this forum is like. Louisa.
  9. I hear that the 17th century structure at Woods Roads in Peckham was set for the bulldozers until very recently. Was this another of his stunts? Although I have driven past the building many times since and a full restoration project seems to be afoot, not sure if this was one taken on by English Heritage. Apparantly the oldest building in SE15. Louisa.
  10. Maybe it is going to be a BetFred and a Starbucks all in one, to reflect the population trends of the local area and to accomodate everyone. Sounds like a giggle to me. Louisa.
  11. I can appreciate some of the fear amongst older people that has been generated as a result of scare mongering by the tabloid press, but that really does sound way beyond the mark to be telling people in an empty bar to remove certain items of clothing. Youd never have had that 10 years or more ago in ED let me tell you! Bloody snobs! Louisa.
  12. Asda dont do small unit shops like that. I would suspect it isnt large enough for a Waitrose unit, plus no parking. I am not a huge fan of overpriced Waitrose anyway. I hate to return to the speculation of M&S, but it is very much a store that would fit the bill in terms of size and location for a Simply Food outlet. However, I would much prefer the Co-op to have stayed. Louisa.
  13. Perhaps, and this is purely speculation, if indeed the current Somerfield has been sold off to someone else, then the smaller unit at the Plough end of LL would be a suitable downsizing location for the Co-op store, and would perhaps be a more suitable location for them. Who knows. I'm now more concerned as to what will replace the current Somerfield. Louisa.
  14. I have just come off the phone to a person at Somerfield customer service department and they seemed to be under the impression that LL (lower end) store had been one of the sold off stores via Co-op. They have taken down my email address and have promised to forward any relevant information onto me as and when it is officially released. Surely this cant have been bought by Waitrose or M&S? Louisa.
  15. Sean - Let us wait and see if the first warning was right or wrong, if I hold my hands up and say you were right now and we end up with a rush hour blizzard I would hate for you to eat your hat (if you have one) ;-) Louisa.
  16. Thank goodness the snow band was positioned further to the west hence us missing anything like what we had sunday into monday. However, still a continued threat for 1 to 3 cm in evening rush hour, Greater London remains on yellow alert for snow causing disruption into this evening has the band tracks south again. My gut feeling is that it will fall as rain this time. Louisa.
  17. Thankyou Philip for correcting me, I have not seen them in a while so was unsure who was who! Louisa.
  18. Risk of disruption Warning : - Heavy Snow Valid from 0200 Fri 6 Valid to 1500 Fri 6 UK regions: 60% East of England 60% South West England 60% London & South East England 60% East Midlands Heavy Snow There is a high risk of a severe weather event affecting parts of southern and eastern England on Friday. Periods of snow will be heavy at times and will give accumulations of 5 to 10 cm over large areas and locally 15 to 20 cm over high ground. This is likely to cause disruption to travel. Issued at: 1141 Thu 5 Feb Met Office
  19. Angela? that is a new name on me, unless he suddenly remarried! This is the same couple who used to run skeehans freehouse on Drakefell RD in Brockley? (heading up the hill out of Nunhead). Louisa.
  20. Sean you are such a tease! I am very glad to hear you will be at work sharpish tomorrow despite the potential for yet more life threatening wintry conditions. Is Maureen and her husband still running the Black Cherry do you know? Louisa.
  21. Sean, I would usually agree, but the setup for snow is sadly still extremely likely. Cold pool of air over the UK, raw ENE winds and moist Atlantic air approaching. He may well have just been trying to play safe, but the Met Office have issued an amber warning for London and the South East, and they did the same sunday night and were pretty much accurate. Louisa.
  22. Pickle, it seems a shame because as I said earlier the previous guy was very chatty nd always delivered on time every time. I just hope I get some letters within the next few days otherwise I may think that I dont have any bills. Louisa.
  23. This snow event looks as though it could quite easily match or surpass sunday/monday's event. Peter Cockcroft (distinguished weather broadcaster) suggested than we could be in line for anything upto 8 inches even in central London the snow is likely to settle and that is despite the wet roads. If he says this, then I believe him. Come on Southwark where are your gritting lorries? Louisa.
  24. I am really pleased that this landmark is going to be saved. Considering the old war memorial has been fully restored, it seems fitting that another local landmark can be given the same care and attention. I would like to see the place turned into some sort of East Dulwich museum, with the interior taken back to what it would have perhaps looked like when it was first built. Louisa.
