Everything Quidsy says Apart from maybe - had Starmer (justifiably) jumped ship during the Starmer era it would have strengthened the Corbyn position and we would still be down that rabbit hole By opposing from within, by being clear but compromising he positioned himself to cure the disease Now I?m looking at our ruling party and wondering who their Starmer is. Can?t see anyone

Nobel peace prize? Go on. When was this?

Corbyn behaving exactly as badly as I expect him to But looking at the endless shite from his followers on social media of all kinds is genuinely depressing

Tighter restrictions/ second national lockdown aka circuit breaker?

although I would say "unnecessary" is suggestive of an unpleasant malady that will pass I still don't think most people have reckoned with the interruption, damage and uncertainty to come -

Tighter restrictions/ second national lockdown aka circuit breaker?

Nothing KK said indicates he is a lefty. He is just pointing out objective truths. Yes Johnson won a landslide. Against the worst leader imaginable But winning is not the same as using power wisely. And Johnson just isnt. He is awful. And if after this year if you can?t see that the it speaks badly of you Many lifelong tories can see how awful he is and are embarrassed. So don?t just reflex ?lefty nonsense? -
plus tier 2 hasn't really worked anywhere plus tier 2 is worse for hospitality than tier 3

We know some things - infections are rising in many places. So in that sense the government isn't alone However - since the very beginning, it has tried to DO the least possible, AND weeks later than it should As we see other parts of the UK trigger circuit breaks it is inevitable that England will do the same at some point - so why not now? But that takes us to second part of the problem - yes a circuit break would help reduce infections. But that is only useful if you use the time wisely. And we have seen over the summer that apart from spaffing money and seeking surface headlines, this government hasn't used time wisely at all So I think we will limp along until January. When, whichever way Johnson jumps on Brexit, his party will ditch him and start the ball rolling towards another election With another government in place we can at least hope for some strategy around the virus and not constant finger-crossing , deaths and economic harm Of course we may not get an election in which case we will just keep limping on for a lot longer -
He is exactly the kind of academic who would have gotten behind teh rise of poulism in German back in the 30s, using all of teh same tired argumenst. "can't trust politicians so go for this guy!" Instead of viewing populism as a problem, he's a supporter of it regardless of outcome Here is news - all of the reasons he gives in that article (and he has written many - oh so many along the same lines) are felt my most people - including liberals!. the difference is most non-racist people don't look at the likes of Trump and think "well clearly he is the person to sort out such problems" They see a racist snake-oil peddler - because that's what he is And the people who refuse to see that? Well you can call them many things - but being on the right side of history isn't one of them
-
I would say you think that because your views are... well, we all know Populism isn?t rampant everywhere. And ?populism? is often code anyway

One would be pushed to describe Matthew Goodwin as an expert in anything

Hospitals in north west on course for close to 1000 deaths a day again I?m sure TE44 can still prattle on about not hearing a cough - but government inaction and indecision is in part down to people like them pushing back https://www.hsj.co.uk/coronavirus/regions-hospitals-set-for-850-covid-deaths-by-mid-november-says-leaked-modelling/7028613.article

"is she Xenophobic? or just highlighting practicality/reality of a society that has changed over the course of her life?..." depends on what her proposed solution to the communication problem is doesn't it?
-
When you say people are being silenced, who exactly do you mean? "A pandemic would see people dying in the street, I can't even hear a cough." Where do you get that definition of a pandemic? You can't even hear a cough? That's just a weird thing to say in a country which has suffered so much. We can agree that the government is not handling it well (compared to many other countries - especially comparable countries) but if you are going to deny it's even happening well... that's just dangerous

It's easy to pluck some random "scientist" out of the air with a contrary view - but you need to back up their bonafides be it promotion of tobacco, climate change or economists for brexit we hear the same thing - "the experts are divided" - but it's never really true - a small number of outliers are held up as "balance" - but the core message remains true https://www.wired.co.uk/article/great-barrington-declaration-herd-immunity-scientific-divide

Clearly Johnson speech is a load of drivel. Not because wind power isn?t doable (I?m a wind power supporter) - it?s just he and his government havent got the attention or actual interest in doing it And I didn?t revive this thread to discuss nuclear. It was just the one I remembered arguing about wind power in. And how weird it is that it was all warnings about miliband and labour that would lead us down a bad path
-
Who knew 7 years later it would be a tory govt with a large majority giving it the large one on wind power eh?

TE44 believes they have an ally in the madness and is getting more aggressive. Doesn?t change facts - proper off the charts weird beliefs systems. Whilst believing they have a truth most people are too blind to see You are a crank te44. Certainly on here if your posts are anything to go by. It?s not a difference of opinion. The Cat has opinions I disagree with. But you? It?s literally impossible to engage

I?d say your worries are broadly justified Spartacus. I don?t think there is A Big Brother tho. Just several competing companies with designs on your data https://daringfireball.net/linked/2020/09/29/amazon-palm-payments

The Margoyles thing isn't quite as clear cut as that is it? "When Miriam Margolyes was ?cleared by Ofcom? last week over remarks she made on Channel 4?s The Last Leg in early May, I was broadly pleased. But there was a lot about the situation that vexed me. Here?s what actually happened. On a live late-night comedy show, speaking from her kitchen because of the lockdown, Margolyes described the government?s handling of the coronavirus crisis as ?a disgrace? and ?a public scandal? and then went on: ?I had difficulty not wanting Boris Johnson to die, I wanted him to die, and then I thought that reflects badly on me and I don?t want to be the sort of person who wants people to die. So, then I wanted him to get better, which he did do, he did get better, but he didn?t get better as a human being and I really would prefer that.?" A lot of what is described as intolerant left is actually made up nonsense by the right (see also Last Night of the Proms") Which isn't to say there isn't a side to the left that doesn't fit the descripion "intolerant"

Simple correction: blair didn?t lose the country because he became a warmonger. 2/3rd population backed it and even afterwards re-elected him. It?s just millions of people forget they wanted something when it became obvious it was a shitshow. Sound like anything else about to happen? The wider debate on this thread has had me thinking but haven?t been near a keyboard big enough to compose a reply yet I don?t understand any post that says ?discussion is being stifled tho? - the arguments are being had but no one is prevented from airing their view. But I do think the original post is fundamentally flawed, Based as it is on the premise of BoN quoting ?liberal? words from Trump as an example of his liberalism.
