Moving out of East Dulwich to release capital - but where to??
Sephiroth replied to GrumpyOldGitLady's topic in The Lounge
"But I'd need the comfort of knowing I was still within walking distance of an outlet selling ?3 coffee and ?5 bread, with a nice large window so people could watch me buying them." no shortage of that in Lewes tbf -
"Anyone tried the Sky Soundbox ?" It's expensive if you don't get the offer - even then it's not meant to be great in comparison to other soundbars (compared to the TV itself it will be amazing) Because I'm a Sonos house I use a Beam for my telly - if I was JUST buying it for a soundbar I think that would be pricey for the job as well (it's good tho)

Moving out of East Dulwich to release capital - but where to??

Yeah, Rochester is an odd one 6 years ago we left East Dulwich for Lewes. And still very much happy with the decision (reflecting on comments fishbiscuits has made in the past, I know people do tend to say that anyway. But it's very much true) We spent several months travelling to towns within commuting distance of London, often staying overnight to get more of a feel. I'll be honest - not many towns felt great. This was pre-referendum days but that vibe was very much present The Lewes/Brighton/south downs combo has been a real winner for us. But in many ways we were already "ready" for a move. We didn't want to recreate the life we had in East Dulwich in a different part of London - we wanted to change things up a bit. But not everyone feels the same way - it very much depends which bits of life you get out of London living now and how much you want to retain -
Well you?ve obviously made your mind up on this issue It?s not an opinion - it?s the facts. If you brits want to absolutely control your borders it means you need to erect one. That?s not an opinion. The opinion is about why you feel the need to do that As for the previous border, many Irish people would object to it being called a border in name only given the problems it caused. But even with the border of your imagination don?t you agree it was more trouble than it was worth? And by working together in eu we have had a better time of it?
-
I know where the border would need to go keano. I?m asking you how you would control a border in a locked down uk? Presumably a uk that wants to control its borders needs a border between uk and Republic of Ireland? So that?s why your talk of it being just an eu imposition is rubbish
-
THAT woman on question time last night seemed very keen on borders. She wanted a total lock down. I keep asking keano how he imagines this is possible without a border but all I get is ?we don?t want a border the eu does?
-
Non-sequiturs and strawmen a gogo You keep being you keano. You won?t change now
-
?Another reason it ought to be rethought is because Sephiroth (above) probably wouldn?t even get those 10 points on the new system because of his English. Then we?d all miss his entertaining contributions. ? What a love you are keano

But just because no one can predict anything with 100% accuracy doesn?t mean we can?t weigh up probabilities. The eu has been a stable and useful environment for its existence - it will evolve and if we stayed we would have helped shaped that evolution. As it is we will be a small country alone, buffeted by other larger blocs. So on balance remaining provides that far better probable outcome Remainers have lots of reasons to complain. One of them Being Dealing with keano and uncle and their bizarro world interpretation of events (the eu will impose a border. Not us!!) and yet here are on the day the government publishes its point system to keep people out (without a border how does it propose to do that?)
-
Still, I?m here now Living in same country as keano and uncleglen Only I have more rights and freedoms than they do
-
When I moved to England, I?d score a 10 on that new test
-
Not sure the plans announced by government today are compatible with keano?s desire for no border and it just being an evil eu plan https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/feb/18/uk-to-close-door-to-non-english-speakers-and-unskilled-workers?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
-
Yep both uk and eu want a good deal Now. Who holds the balance of power? There you go. It?s ain?t the uk. It hasn?t got nothing but it?s pissing away any leverage and goodwill by being arrogant hissy babies. Demanding what it already has for nothing. The uk is the antagonist in all of this. Eu never asked for it. Uk will come out badly because it doesn?t have the heft it thinks it does. And it will lose two nations from its kingdom. And it won?t be the eu fault
-
Gotta love a country that agrees and signs a working agreement only to renege on it weeks later The world is watching They aren?t looking at ?brave adventurers?
-
"...it would insist on checks on the border... ie the EU would insist." which was why remainers said all along and were called scaremongerers. You wanted to leave a perfectly stable union TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR BORDERS!!, where this was always going to happen and you did it anyway Now you complain it's only the EU insisting as if you don't care about borders -- breathtaking
-
I thought it was Britain that wanted to take back control of its borders keano? Was that not the case? You have a better plan for Ireland?
-
"I took it as the usual dick-swinging from the UK" This is an element. But I also think "this government continue to underestimate ALL of the logistical, cultural, political, economic challenges" is way underpriced
-
"Is the UK Gov planning on breaking the agreement and forcing the EU to insist that the ROI enforces a border on the island?" yes Is this despicable and irresponsible? Yes
-
Alan!!!!!! Even mardy me hasn?t had a twitter ban. What did you do?
-
"But surely that only applies to Labour leave voters. Tory leave voters could vote for their natural side." well yes, in this election But that makes non-tory leave voters worse - because clearly brexit NOW will be shaped by (waves hand at whatever this government is) as they were always going to be elected in this election. But just as Corbyn fans (not saying Cat is one) imagined He would win ( I know, I know), they imagined their own version of brexit But even then - tory leave voters have to accept there will come a time when they won't have power - and then (waves hand at whatever the opposition is now) will be doing a lot of things they won't like Basically all leavers on all sides could only see the (mostly imaginary) benefits as applicable to them, and dismissed any Actually Very Serious downsides
-
"The longer term 'concept' was of importance to many leavers (myself included)" but again the longer term concept is irreconcilably different amongst many leavers - never mind Remainers. Therefore it will forever be a mirage and never a remote possibility. That's the problem that most remainers see - apples and oranges are different fruit and people will have their own preference. But leave vs remain is Unicorn vs Dog(or cat, according to preference) It's profoundly irresponsible
-
"Can you expand on this please..." I know many people on the left and on the right (and in the centre) who voted Leave (neither side can see the problem with leaving and The Other Lot getting in) So I don't think Cat is unique or needs to expand much - to me it just reads that people all had their own reasons for leaving It's why so many insist "I know what I voted for" - but rarely acknowledge that might be for very different reasons to other leave voters (I think Cat has said they do acknowledge this in the past tbf)

Another view re Mifid 2: https://citywire.co.uk/wealth-manager/news/eu-targets-post-brexit-london-in-shake-up-of-mifid-ii-research-rules/a1321186 Specifics aside - I would say that in the 2 and a half years, the EU have consistently been significantly way more prepared and serious than any UK govt in discussions. They understand the impacts better and are better prepared And all I'm seeing from the UK side now is even more bluster
-
?Project fear? they screamed at us
-
Gove confirming today that barriers and tariffs will very much be ?a thing? All those hours trying to convince leavers that would be the case and was always going to be - never to be recovered
