Because the sovereign power want the benefits of proximity to the eu without the obligations Sovereignty isn't a one-way "win/win" - there are tradeoffs. And the UK is unwilling to countenance the cost of it's folly. They aren't restictions "imposed" on a sovereign country - they are the consequences explained clearly during teh referendum and dismissed as project fear.
-
it wasn't the eu begging for previous extension and they aren't this time either - but they are open to the idea so that we don't embarrass/damage ourselves farther. And Johnson will request it because he knows the damge done to the UK will be on him if he doesn't
-
"I?m sure you don?t need a history lesson from me but it?s because a coalition of Remainers forced BJ to request one." well I wouldn't WANT a history kesson from you, but that's very different Johnson was forced to by reality - not a coalition of Remainers Still - he's running out of excuses to hide behind now. And when he requests another extension in a couple of weeks we can chow down on some more popcorn
-
that hoary old excuse is quite mouldy by now The EU haven't blinked so far, have infinitely more resilience to this than the UK If the EU are close to blinking why are we even in a 1 year extension already?
-
"Only a lunatic would persist with a hard Brexit right now." or several million of them I know the surveys at the weekend had "more than half" of the public support extension. But that means almost half don't support an extension.
-
?The antifa fascists? You couldn?t make this up Why is it controversial to be ANTI FAscist glen Isn?t that exactly the position Britain took in WW2?
-
Keano. I wouldn?t get excited about wto terms if I were you World Trade Organisation: No-Deal Brexit will put UK at risk in new depression. A NO-DEAL Brexit risks extra trouble for the UK during an oncoming recession that could be as deep as the Great Depression, the head of the WTO has said. 'Let's go WTO!' https://www.thenational.scot/news/18516523.wto-no-deal-brexit-will-put-uk-risk-new-depression/?ref=twtrec

? We hear that Coronavirus affects the BAME community disproportionately higher, with behaviour such as this protest, you can begin to see reasons why.? It?s barely a subtext to be fair. Snake is saying black peopel bring it on themselves? Or am I misreading and being unfair Because if these protesters aren?t helping the spread of the virus, surely same is true of the large, mostly white gatherings at beaches this weekend. But i can?t see anyone saying ?white people bring it on themselves?
-
Wingless. I can read the subtext of snake?s post just fine thanks
-
Jesus Have you seen pictures of crowded beaches full of white People everywhere this weekend??? But you want to scold black People for protesting about being murdered by police
-
"But you know... social distancing is still important too. People are still dying (several hundred a day in UK)." Fair. For some reason I'd suspended this angle
-
Starmer is not leading the country (not yet anyway) Don?t you get it. People follow the government message and actions. And there is the problem.
-
Amazing how these individual scumbags generally exercise power in one direction. It?s a stunning coincidence how black men suffer this kind of death for no reason so often. And yet groups of white men can turn up with guns protesting at lockdown and... nothing happens Talk about being wilfully blind
-
Are people seriously complaining or belittling other who want to protest at disgusting events in America. I expect better from you fishy People should be on the streets. I?m amazed the reaction is as muted as it is tbh
-
Leaving aside for a moment they are all answering to different accusations, the last time I checked, none of those people are in anyway involved in leading or writing policy for uk government during this crisis?
-
think the boo thing is a bit rubbish - however "Agree or disagree with him he's here for 4 years" is categorically not going to happen - in 4 years: Boris will be long gone UK on way to being gone possibly election well before 4 years time as well "We are not a banana republic" Then "we" need to stop behaving like one. Action without consequences is what happens in banana republics. Scotland had no problem telling senior people they had to leave when they broke with policy
-
Starm Troopers surely?
-
Wow. What a profound response to real problems which will massively damage people?s lives. So deep.
-
So will of the people. Glen What is happening with the border in the Irish Sea? The one we were assured would never be accepted by any British prime minister. But is actually happening Reasons? If you don?t extend transition period, a country (this one) which is struggling badly with a pandemic will be on its knees as the cost and disruption of no deal takes place. I know you still have your fingers in your ears (will of the people!!!!!) but please. For the sake of the country. Face up to reality (If a referendum was held today to nullify Brexit btw - I reckon your will of the people would net you about 35%) But you won. On you go. I will be blaming you tho

But how is it CLEAR Cummings has done nothing wrong? Clearly vast swathes of the country, of all persuasions can see he has done something wrong. Of nothing else he has told the public to do one thing and has done something else and now the police are having to deal with portions of the public who say they don?t have to bother with lockdown because of Cummins behaviour. As the architect of the uk lockdown policy he has to comply. Country face ls a longer lockdown with a strong her second wave with an uncompliant public, because of his behaviour. How is this ?doing nothing wrong??

I?ve been full of advice - to go over the big ticket items of the last few years Don?t vote to leave the eu Don?t give either Johnson or Corbyn a big majority Actually don?t elect johnson as replacemnt for May Lock down at the start of March - don?t wait until nearly the end replace Johnson immediately - probably with Hunt. Remove Cummings Immediately extend Brexit transition by 2 years Wherever I say these things I get told off. But don?t say I don?t offer advice
-
"this" as in your thread title - "Is Boris fit to lead?" The answer is clearly "no he isn't". But on this thread various people have ignored that to just strawman a "this is a leftie/momentum led" thing
-
Given the outraged response from so many conservative voters and tory press after yesterday?s debacle, we can at least agree this isn?t some lefty obsession now?
-
".he has done Brexit." well - we are out of the EU legally But we aren't in practice because we are in an extendted transition. A transition which will need to be extended again by at least 1 year beacuse a) brexit was and remains a ludicrous idea in practice and b) should he decline an extension he will be responsible for the break up of the UK, damage british countries for at least a decade and in the middle of a pandemeic likely cause the deaths of many more people unnecessarily as supply chains get knocked to smithereens. He has already thrown NI unionists under the bus - fishermen and farmers are next YOu can remind me of his majority all you like but he was up against Corbyn so what could anyone expect. And just a reminder that Blair and his involvement in Iraq was widely condemned afterwards but was supported by 2/3rds of the country for a while - so quoting maths and majorities is meaningless when faced with a changing world
