Tutoring for primary school children - is this necessary?
ClareC replied to millie42's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I grew up in Kent so did the 11 plus and was fortunate to gain a place at the local Grammar School. A few kids had tutors even all those years ago, only seemed beneficial if the kid was borderline. The teachers knew very early on who the definite passes/fails were. Us state school kids still competed with the private school kids - a lot of people paid for private infant / junior school to maximise the chance of passing the 11 plus, and then having a state Grammar place. -
Does anyone know if there is a service available locally for advice re existing home security and how to improve it?

Hmmm the VW in the middle of one of my wheels has disappeared too :-(

How do they steal the fuel? Is it vehicles with unlocked petrol caps?

I had a Smeg fridge dumped (and filled) my hallway! Apparantly that was a huge favour ?!?!?! My friend and I had to manhandle it to the kitchen which was no mean feat given the size of the thing, packaging and steps to negotiate !! John Lewis 'couldn't ' get bedroom furniture up to the top floor either.. :-(

Will never use a kettle in a hotel again!!!

At what age do they start JAPPS? If they then go onto JAPS at 4, do they still have to do the academic assessment to stay at 7? Guessing they do at 11.

Prefer Bluewater, doesn't take ages to get to and is free to park too!

My sentiments exactly! Seems to be common with all insurer's though. I went onto confused.com and did two idential quotes, 1 with no "claims" 1 with a non fault claim - over ?100 difference :-( (admittedly better than my existing insurer). Problem is although I didn't claim from my own insurance (or even use them), I technically "claimed" against the other driver's insurance so am deemed to have made a claim! My low mileage, 100% reliable, owned for 11 years, rarely used "old banger" was written off (uneconomic to repair), I was given a pittance and now it costs me extra per year to insure the replacement because I was given the pittance. Not to mention I had to shell out a great deal more than my settlement figure. Very irritating!!!

One non fault accident (my stationary vehicle hit by another driver who admitted liability and whose insurers settled direct, ie no claim necessary from my insurer)and my car insurance is increased by 50% despite having protected no claims bonus! How does that one work ?!?!?!? grrrrr Makes a mockery of fault/no fault and no claims bonus!!

I love dogs and we > used to have a lovely alsation when I was a kid, > but they are not humans and therefore should not > be humanized (not sure if that's the right word) How is caring about their welfare / that they are not mistreated humanising them? The OP showed concern, I don't see how that humanises them. If you genuinely love dogs as you claim, you would be concerned if you thought one was being mistreated.

My nephews have them (aged 2 and 4) and love them. Seem to work for my sister too although I beleive they are not as stable in pull along mode as they could be.....

Should you use a harness on a high chair?
ClareC replied to skip's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you were buying one or other I would get the babysat. I have both and the harness without the babysat would not work for a baby that young IMO. Your welcome to pop over and look/try my chair to help you decide. -
Advice please...what does your baby wear at nightime?
ClareC replied to prm's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter was born Jan, during the snow! We kept the heating on constant ensuring the room didnt fall below 18 degrees and dressed her in a short sleeve vest, long sleeve babygro and 2.5 tog grobag. My daughter was over 7 lb and therefore big enough for a grobag - you need to check the weight on each individual one but it all comes down to the size of the head hole - ie small enough their head's cannot slip into the Grobag. -

Recommendations wanted; holiday buggy / boot of car buggy
ClareC replied to ClareC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I have a large boot, however, I also have two dogs (hence the large boot). Ideally looking for something that folds quite compact so the dogs still have plenty of space when we travel dogs and buggy :-) -
Hi all, Am wanting to buy a second buggy to keep in the boot of the car / take on holiday / occasional use on public transport. I am after a buggy that folds easily and quite small, reclines (so that my daughter could snooze in it whilst out) and doesn't have wide wheels so could be used on the buses occasionally. Doesn't need to lie flat as she is now 6 months. I fancied the Microlite superlite but having looked at one in Soup Dragon today although they are light and fold quite small, the front wheels are wide so would cause difficulty using public transport. Any suggestions?

Prams, number 63 bus and aggressive driver!

I appreciate the example > on the 63 the bus was empty. Years ago not folded > can't get on but then I think society was more > disaplined then. I totally appreciate that prams need to be folded at busy time, unless it is mandatory to fold prams at all times (which to my knowledge it is not), then its not unreasonable to allow a sleeping baby continue to sleep and not fold a pram. If the bus was busy it would be a totally different situation. Prior to having my daughter I regularly used the 185, 40, 12 and 176, I didn't come across any unpleasant drivers at all. On the few occasions I have used these bus with the pram, ive had no problems at all - but then I have only travelled by bus with a pram a handful of times in the 6 months since my daughter was born. I have also only travelled at quiet times. I started this thread because the new design is very restrictive for many buggies, not just "large" one's. Also the driver concerned was not simply 'doing his job' he was was unnecessarily unpleasant and aggresive, he was not provoked in any way shape or form and there was no reasonable explanation for his behaviour. As mentioned I have purposely not provided any description of him as I specifically did not want to risk starting a "witch hunt". Do London buses really want to encourage those with prams who have car's to drive rather than take the bus, increasing congestion and pollution? Following the appalling manner in which I was treated for no apparant reason I would think twice about taking the 63 again, far more appealing to drive!
