  1. Regarding cost of food... to some extent the cost and quality go together, and I'm happy to pay for something decent. If it was like the cafe in Crystal Palace park (basically a selection of various deep-fried items with beans and chips) we simply wouldn't use it. But you need to strike a balance... it's too expensive. Even a can of coke is something daft like ?2.

  3. I don't think the "protestors are hypocrites" argument really stacks up. Surely the point is to change the nature of our infrastructure (energy, transportation)... rather than to stop using the existing infrastructure altogether. Moving towards renewables doesn't mean you have to live off-grid in the meantime.

It's right next to the playground, why wouldn't kids want to buy an ice cream or a drink? Yesterday I saw a couple of young girls walk away looking glum and rather embarrassed, because they couldn't pay for their their hot chocolate and cake. It got me thinking about what other people might not have cards... immigrants? The elderly and vulnerable?
  6. Anteto is probably big enough for a Spoons. It's huge. Especially if you include the next door bit (which used to be the cafe and is under the same ownership). Where is Lousia's petition? Has it caught Tim Martin's attention yet?
  7. What happened to the petition for a Wetherspoons?

Strangely, one of the larger units on LL - East Dulwich Deli - was split up into two, after which a chain (Sweaty Betty) took half of it. So... I am not 100% convinced of this argument.
  9. To me, VDR is almost pizza hut/domino's standard of pizza... however, the ankle-biter seems to love the food, and I like the beer, so we seem to end up there quite a bit. It sometimes seems to get busy in the evening, mainly with drinkers, with the food as alcohol-absorbing stodge for those who want it.

  11. It does suck a bit... if I'm going for a run I'll often chuck a fiver in my pocket so I can stop somewhere for 5 minutes at the end to relax with a coffee. I always assumed the main reason for going cashless is that they can serve customers more quickly, but yes I guess the logistics of depositing cash and keeping stocked with change has an overhead (and risk) too.
  12. I liked it too. But it was never busy... the fit-out wasn't great, and the prices were reasonably high (IMO).
  13. I think as a general rule anything that raises climate change awareness has to be a positive, whether it's "anarchists and old farts", or rather precocious teenagers. The gravity of the issue outweighs any personal dislike. Let's have a bit less of the "die-ins" though... it's a bit embarrassing..
  14. Nice work Luke. Did you guys get out in time to scare the mugger away, or did he manage to snatch the phone first?

  16. Yep... don't skim on top of paper, unless you want the whole lot to literally fall down. I'd still look at stripping the paper on the ceiling, getting the ceiling skimmed, and accept that some of the completed paintwork will need touching up afterwards. If a job's worth doing, etc etc...

Penguin68 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Because the stem is hollow but segmented (like a bamboo) > cutting it and directly apply glyphosate into the > stem will not work - you must drench the leaves. Stem filling can work very well... I know from experience... but you have to either make the cut at near ground level, or completely cut off the top and break up the internal structure with a long rod of some description. But yes, regularly drenching the leaves with a concentrated glyphosate preparation does work too.
  18. Surely only half a day's work for a plasterer to skim the ceiling? That's what I'd do...
  19. If it's in your own garden, tackle it yourself with glyphosate. It is doable if you are persistent. The only reason (that I can see) to get one of these companies in is that you can pay a fixed price for complete eradication with an n year guarantee, to keep potential buyers happy.
  20. Only one post that could even vaguely be construed as being anywhere near close-to-the-bone. And now this thread is offensive and should be closed?? Come on...
  21. That attachment... did you really mean to share that with us?
  22. I doubt you'll find any hard border between urban and suburban London. But East Dulwich feels pretty suburban to me, in that it's pretty much entirely residential - with businesses only really servicing the local population. If it's not, then it sure as hell isn't far off. Peckham, Camberwell, Brixton, Clapham, New Cross, all feel significantly less so.
  23. I never met anyone who had a Laserdisc player, as far as I recall! They were incredibly expensive. They did quite well in Japan though, you could still buy them well into the 2000s. Apparently Laserdisc, although it looks like a large CD, actually worked by a completely different principle... it didn't store digital data as such, but rather pits of variable lengths. So is really an analogue format (albeit with an optional digital audio track). Each side of the disc could only store an hour of video, so you'd have to turn it over halfway through a movie... or if longer than 2 hours, change the disc. Would love to get my hands on one, just to check it out.
  24. Oh I see! I never really bothered with pre-recorded.. partly as CDs were cheaper and superior quality (I seem to recall they had a reputation for being transferred from the masters "on-the-cheap", and rumours of early versions of compression algos being inferior). But mainly because it was only very mainstream stuff available. But I did pick up a couple of bargain bin ones... Blur and The Clash, I think. In your shoes, I'd probably just buy the MP3s, or find a way to capture the audio from a streaming service instead of transferring the MD. Personally I was only really concerned about the irreplaceable stuff. Gigs and radio recordings, teenage band "demos", things people had recorded for me off rare vinyl, etc.
  25. The Cotswolds??!! FFS. If it's worth risking your marriage for, then I'd think you could be a bit more adventurous than Chipping Norton. Eve and Emma both sound delightful, but I'm not sure what a "hybrid mistress" would involve.
