  1. Creams is a franchise operation, I'm not expecting great things, but it's probably a nice treat for the kids occasionally. We had a Taste of Afghan flyer through the door the other day, and it's also on Deliveroo... I'm not really familiar with Afghan food, but plenty of the dishes will look familiar to curry fans (karahi/biryani/tikka/etc). Lots of things seem to be available by the kg, and looking through the window, they seem to have some pretty large tables in there. So perhaps it's geared towards banqueting/catering? So maybe it's reasonably authentic stuff? Only ever went in The Hope once. I liked the decor, board games, drinks selection... but it was absolutely empty, and we had a roast which was not particularly good...

It's a not-particularly-tactful way of saying that it's frequented by builders and tradesmen. Which certainly used to be true 15-20 years ago. Not really sure about now, haven't been there in so long (since the smoking ban, probably!).

"Tommy" uses a completely made up name, so quoting his real name alongside it seems fair. Are you sympathetic to his cause, uncleglen?
  4. Well, he is now a wannabe politician... is it normal for politicians to operate under a false name? Not as far as I'm aware.

  6. I hear Wetherspoons don't allow dogs, so that could be a potential safe space. Perhaps your feline friends could sign the petition. But beware of the cat-ripper, the killer clowns, and the ever-present danger of being crushed and devalued.

  8. Seemed pretty busy when I went past the other day. Maybe not everyone knows (or cares) about the rather dishonest pretence of continuity. It's in a great location and looks the part... maybe that's enough for some punters?

  10. JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The price in Peckham Spoons is much cheaper than Chancery Lane Spoons Yeah, central London Wetherspoons aren't particularly cheap. Kentish Drovers/Fox on Hill/Capitol/Postal Order all seem to be the same price, through.

OK, I did once live in Clapham (in a grim flatshare in 2000), and it's true that we can afford to eat out at reasonably nice places.. but I also use Wetherspoons, Nandos, McDonalds, curry houses, etc. There is a valid point to be made about social cleansing, but instead of making it constructively (which you're obviously more than capable of doing), you repeat the same old insults, provocations, and general bitterness.
  12. This whole thread was always going to be all about "look at me, I'm so down-to-earth, everyone else is an idiotic snob/wannabe" We all know there's not going to be any ridiculous petition, it's just about YOU, making the same old tedious point. Again and again. Finally you play your hand, with the same old snide insults that you so love to regurgitate. Thoroughly unpleasant character. I hope you vomit on your ?2.50 brexit beer.

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem. It could be a local for the immediate area, but nobody else is going to make the journey especially. I seem to remember only recently, there were rumours of a drive-through McDs...
  14. Yes - much cheaper. I think around ?2.50 for a pint of ale, which would cost ?4+ anywhere else round here.
  15. TBH I think fireworks should only be allowed on certain days of the year... particular celebrations and festivals. If 4th July is one such day, then so be it.
  16. Captain Marvel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It has and I know I'm flogging a dead horse here but what does 'viable' mean? It's a good question... I am probably a bit out of my depth knowledge-wise. But even in the best case scenario, it can be difficult and expensive to retrofit old buildings to modern standards, in terms of infrastructure, utilities, accessibility, thermal efficiency, structural integrity. James Barber stated that it's of poor quality construction, with single-brick thickness (even the Victorian houses round here, which are of terrible construction quality, have double-brick construction on the side walls). We have no reason to doubt this. It would probably need a brand new steel "skeleton" for starters, somehow slotted inside the existing walls. So basically... it means it's too expensive to do. Totally unjustifiable under NHS budget. Would it get English Heritage funding? Of course not. Would the private sector take it on? Not if redevelopment would be more expensive than a new-build!! Captain Marvel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > And in response to your 'bit of tarmac' comment on > the previous page, the council resurfaced and > paved the whole of Court Lane completely > unnecessarily. Yes... we've all heard stories of councils re-surfacing roads to use up their budget (in fear of having it reduced if they don't spend it). Maybe it's true, I don't know. Resurfacing a long road like Court Ln will obviously be expensive. I've heard a figure of ?25 per sqm. So maybe... 25x8x1000 = ?200K, just for the road surfacing (not the paving)??? James Barber would know, I'm sure. But I don't think it would be even vaguely comparable to the costs needed to bring that hospital building into the 21st century.
  17. I didn't hear any fireworks... luckily!! I like America a lot, though (and, quite often, Americans). I don't know about having "so little that's real". Blues, rock n' roll, jazz, punk, soul. Joseph Heller, Philip K Dick, Hunter S Thompson. Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino. Bill Hicks. Richard Pryor. Texas BBQ, steaks, rueben-on-rye, key lime pie... state fairs, craft beer. Stunning scenery from cowboy country to wine country... secluded islands and beaches, to epic mountains. OK so the sports are terrible, and the cars aren't very good and going round corners. I still struggle a bit with country music. And they keep on electing morons. But you can't have everything.

Captain Marvel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I gather you're no fan of monolithic Victorian > architecture Fish > > Perhaps then you appreciate the irony of knocking > down a hospital wing to build a health centre I think it's a lovely looking building... I do appreciate it. But I'm also a pragmatist, and I'm still wondering what the building, if preserved, could actually be used for. Surely it has already been established that it's not viable as a hospital/health centre.
  20. Petition for a Wetherspoons. Haha. Very good. Because that's exactly how it works... pester them and they'll magically conjure up a suitable premises. The Grove Tavern is a TERRIBLE location for a pub. Awful. Shite. It will never, ever be a pub again. Flats or a small Tesco seem like the likely future for that place.
  21. sand12 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The issue is more about preserving the social and architectural heritage of the site. But there will be a new health centre on the site. So surely it's purely an architectural argument, right? I do wonder what people think the building should actually be used for..
  22. TBF, it is roast rib of beef for ?24. You can't expect to get that for ?15.
  23. Humdinger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > In fact, it costs even more than Hawksmoor Yes, the Hawksmoor roast is exactly what I was thinking of. If it's better than that, then fine...

  25. ?24 is steak money. If I pay that for a roast, it'd better be one of the best roast beef and yorkshire puds I've ever had.
