I drive (and am unashamed to say I quite like cars and driving) but parents driving kids to/from school is something we need to cut down on. Especially round here where there are so many decent primaries. I'm sure there are some exceptional circumstances, but it shouldn't be the norm. But even if you are in your car, spending ?2 to park so your kids can go to the playground doesn't sound like a big deal to me. A couple of times a week... ?100 a year. If you can afford to run a car...

Should road bicycle users/cyclists be taxed and insured?
fishbiscuits replied to Passiflora's topic in The Lounge
Cycling should be incentivised, not penalised. I do agree that there should be consequences for not using lights, as well as dangerous/antisocial behaviour... failing to slow down for pedestrians already crossing the road, jumping lights, cycling on pavement, etc. But not sure it's practical to enforce. -

I can understand that if you're paying ?20 each for a pizza and a couple of drinks, but seem outrageous if you're paying for something a bit nicer.

If it's cheap eats you're after, I like Yadas, FM Mangal, Honest Burger, Dulwich Tandoori, Napura. Made of Dough, Theos, or 400 Rabbits for pizza. Maybe the new Japanese in ED is worth checking out too. A bit further up on the price scale, Forza Win, Camberwell Arms, Coal Rooms, Kudu, Peckham Bazaar, Begging Bowl, Pedler all excellent...

The girl can rot in the desert for all I care. But to withdraw citizenship... seems logistically problematic. Everybody has to live somewhere (even if it's in prison).

Moving out of East Dulwich to release capital - but where to??
fishbiscuits replied to GrumpyOldGitLady's topic in The Lounge
Hove is OK... much of Hove is walkable to central Brighton, so it doesn't really matter if Hove itself doesn't have much going on. -

Brighton is quite a bit cheaper than here - even near the center. Or one of the nearby towns - Lewes, Worthing, etc. I'd definitely be looking in that direction if moving out of London. I quite like Canterbury (but trains are into St Pancras, not LB). You're close to Margate and Whitstable too. -
Call yourself a christian or are you a christian?

Angelina Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > it should not only be Christianity that is pulled to pieces. You're right that Christianity has become a soft target. Personally I'm more than happy to pull Islam and Judaism to pieces too, but risk being labelled a bigot by doing do, so will refrain for the time being. They all have similar problems to varying degrees. > I am saying that under the name of religion, there > are people who do great deeds of good. You mention the salvation army, but that's hardly a great example. They seem to exist primarily to promote Christianity, and they have disgusting views towards gay people (including only recently supporting "conversion therapy"). This is the problem when Charity results from the "carrot-and-stick" of religion. Trying to please your imaginary friend in the sky (and his bonkers book) is a very questionable motive, and doesn't always translate into objectively "good" deeds. -

The concept of worshiping any sort of deity is something of a contradiction in my eyes. Does your "god" have power to intervene in this world, help people, fix things? If he does, then why does he stand by when unspeakably horrific things happen to innocent people? If he doesn't, then why are you wasting your effort on him? He can't help you. -

I don't really get Christians or Christianity. I mean, if you believe the whole bible word for word, and use it as some sort of definitive moral code, then you must be incredibly naive, and you almost certainly have some rather bigoted views. If, on the other hand, you pick and choose the bits you like, and just treat it's assorted anecdotes as some sort of loose guideline... then what's the point? You've apparently already decided that your own morality takes precedence. -
?4.40 at Rocca is good! Do they do the kids drink free?

It's not bad. Quite old-school. Pretty popular on the weekends.

Looked at the menu online for Matoom. There's a lot of stuff on there that doesn't sound particularly Thai (won ton soup, aromatic crispy duck, gyozas, samosas, etc...). But I guess they're just trying to please everyone. If the actual Thai dishes are decent, I'd give it a try.

Er, yeah... Chinatown is renowned for impeccable hygiene. No rats, mice or cockroaches in those places. No way.

Gangs, gun/knife violence, and drugs are all facets of the same problem. Yeah, victims are often people who have gone down the wrong path in life themselves, but surely that's exactly the sort of person who needs help before it's too late. I'm really not sure what point Sally was trying to make. monkeyspanner - yes it looks like you can donate via their website too.

DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Since the old bar was ripped out and the tiny bar > installed it has become a soulless place to drink. It does lack any sort of homely vibe, I admit. But it's OK... the staff are really welcoming, and the interior's a vast improvement over the old, hideous purple theme.

People trying car doors - every night in ED?
fishbiscuits replied to DovertheRoad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's happened to me twice... luckily nothing of real value taken, apart from a pair of cheap prescription glasses. I think I must have left it unlocked. I don't believe that people are using high-tech equipment to break into cars, and then stealing items of negligible value. It doesn't add up at all. -
It's not great, but much better than it was 2-3 years back.

malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The biggest danger by far to cyclists is > pedestrians just walking out without looking. Yeah, interaction between pedestrians and cyclists seems a little problematic, particularly in central London. I think in reality we need a bit of behaviour modification on both sides. Pedestrians DO need to be more careful... I think a lot of us rely too much on audible cues, instead of looking properly. But at the same time, it's not reasonable for cyclists to turn into side roads at full speed, and shout at any pedestrians who happen to be crossing at the time. (Drivers are taught to give pedestrians right of way in this situation... cyclists need to do the same).

The quantity of the (supposedly) active substance is reduced to literally zero. The theory is that the substance's "energy" is transferred to the dilutant. The principle is totally different to early vaccines using actual live virus.
