  1. The area has definitely become wealthier. But there are also many more families with young kids.. so exactly the type of people who will rarely eat dinner out, but will often get takeaways. Weekend breakfast/brunch/lunch is still busy anywhere half decent. Peckham has a somewhat younger population, combined with a more "trendy" eating/drinking scene, so it stands to reason that it will be a bit more lively. In answer to the OP, "what are the magic factors that make you return"... it's got to be somewhere good enough to make you put a date in the diary and book a babysitter. It's no longer a local impromptu dinner, it's an occasion, a treat, and the food and atmosphere need to match. Along Lordship Lane, The old ToastED was probably the only place that fitted that criteria, and I suppose arguably Franklins.

Yeah I've not spoken with anyone who doesn't agree that it was in bad taste. I think where people are divided is on whether they believe he intended the racist connotation (and indeed whether his likely intentions are even relevant)
  3. It was obviously intended as satire of the royal family. In a democratic country, it's perfectly valid that we can openly question what value this inherited privilege, and associated ceremonial duty, really adds to our society. To most of us, being mixed race is not even vaguely noteworthy these days. As far as I'm concerned, kids of mixed heritage are not "mixed race children", they're just kids like any other. If he's of a similar mindset, and a racial slur is absolutely the furthest thing from your thoughts, it stands to reason that you might not immediately realise the connotations. So yes... extremely ill-judged, and with hindsight it seems obvious - so his employers had every right to discipline him. But I have no reason to believe it was an intentional racial insult, and I am certain his apology is genuine.
  4. I think a) The behavior described in the OP is so obviously reckless that there's nothing useful I can really add. If CLG is often used for overtaking, then the residents should speak with their councillor. b) Your accusations of others dragging the thread off topic, and attempting to show how clever they are, either demonstrate an evil glint of irony, or a staggering lack of self awareness.
  5. Yes of course it would be illegal. I wasn't trying to imply otherwise. Some may find it morally justifiable, others may not. C'est la via.

Our American friends might describe this phenomenon as "book smart" vs "street smart". But I agree, you have dragged the thread off topic for long enough. This thread is about dangerous driving, not about you! Back to the original topic, please!!
  7. Yeah, I'd just turn up with a ladder and a toolbox, and take it down myself. If anyone else actually wanted it, it would already be gone.

Oh come on, only a simpleton could possibly think it was a serious comment. I'm not particularly bothered if people didn't find it funny, but it wasn't intended to trivialize the OP. And in my defence, KidKruger started it...

  10. As a driver of a black car, I am offended. You never hear people describing bad drivers in white cars, do you?
  11. Looking into it further, there are a few male members. I wonder if any of them have ever put themselves forward? It seems unlikely. It would take a brave man indeed to claim he'd make a more suitable candidate (and potential MP), than the female members he'd be standing against.
  12. It's basically the stuff I listed in the previous post. Some electrical work, some new furniture, etc. Feel free to PM me.

Yes and no... gender is just one criteria you could use to split the population. Ethnicity, class, sexuality, disability... and plenty more besides. You could look at the conservatives for instance, and conclude that they're disproportionately white and privately educated. You also have to consider the raison d'etre for such a party. Realistically, they're not going to be expecting credible success in a general election. But perhaps they can achieve something valuable through representation in local politics, as well as raising awareness of issues affecting women, and presumably seek to influence mainstream the political narrative. Given these (assumed) aims, I'd argue that male representation is not necessary. This reminds me a little bit of "black lives matter" vs "all lives matter". Sometimes a marginalized group needs to shout a bit louder to get their voices heard... make the needle overshoot a bit before a system can reach equilibrium. Then a bunch of people completely miss the point and start wailing "but what about me!! I matter too!!"...
  14. Are you sure, Renata? Southwark's "additional" licencing scheme was introduced 3 years ago, and covers any property shared by three or more unrelated people. As a result I had to apply for a licence, make some costly modifications, and eject one of my tenants. Has this scheme now been reverted?
  15. I've also done one. Hard-wired, LINKED smoke alarm system, all furnishings to have fire safety labels, emergency lighting, a few assorted small electrical jobs. Then after doing all that, council declared that one of the bedrooms was considered too small (even though it had double bed, drawers, and wardrobe..). Saying that, the process wasn't exactly nightmarish.
  16. Are we talking actual building work continuing on a public holiday, or DIY? The former shouldn't happen. The latter is not unreasonable.
  17. Saturday morning kids films at the Picturehouse are ?2.50 (for both kids and adults). That's when we go. Wouldn't dream of paying over ?20 for peppa bloody pig.
  18. I know you're taking the piss, but General Store (Bellenden Rd) and Mons cheesemongers both sell good butter.
  19. East Dulwich used to have 6 per hour in peak times, before the London Bridge "upgrade" commenced. So 8 doesn't sound impossible to me. However, 8 trains per hour, PLUS 6 overgrounds per hour on the stretch through PR and QRP... that sounds ambitious.
  20. If you're still looking to cut up your old sofa(s), an electric hand saw (e.g. Black and Decker Scorpion) is a good way of doing it. Strangely enjoyable, but rather messy.
  21. The usual sanctimonious rubbish. Most people use the supermarket sometimes. Try carrying a whole weeks shopping for a family of four down Nunhead Lane! The key is to use a mix of local shops/markets when you can on the weekends (especially meat, fish, bakery and speciality shops) and supermarket (or delivery) for the bulk.
  22. The "Leave" campaign was based on some highly tenuous claims, particularly the outrageous "?350 million a week for the NHS" bus. That alone justifies a re-run IMO. Then add in the fact that there was almost no mention of the Northern Ireland conundrum running up to the original referendum... many of us are more aware of the realities and intricacies of the situation now. A second referendum seems completely logical. Unfortunately it probably won't happen, there is insufficient will in the two main parties.
  23. IMO this is the kind of thing you usually do if you're having other major work done, e.g. kitchen refurb. Then you can take up the kitchen floor and dig down down to connect up the soil pipe, and extraction can be designed into the new kitchen.. maybe even concealed in the ceiling. Otherwise, you'll need a macerator, with 22mm pipes under the floorboards and probably some boxing in. Not ideal. And god knows where the extraction will go... maybe along the corner of the kitchen ceiling, with more boxing in?

The forum should be a valuable way for businesses to engage with the local community, but time and time again, the behaviour of certain posters spoil things for everyone. Best of luck with the restaurant.
