Def an electrician. I wouldn't call a handyman, in fact I would expect most handymen (handy-people?) to refuse to do electrical work.
-
They look OK to me. Aesthetically I really do not like the sections of red brick next to the windows, but I guess that's just my personal taste. The fundamental design and materials look consistent with lots of other modern housing. I've never really understood the argument that new-builds should be "in keeping", do we really want mock-period architecture? I certainly don't! I would like to see provisions for kerbside electric car charging considered for new build houses. Maybe a couple of pop-out outlets out the front (if such a thing exists!). The chances are that a family buying a fairly expensive house (850K?) are going to own a car, or at least be considering it.

Not so long ago, simply running one minute for a bus or train would make me exhausted to the point of nausea. While I'm never going to be much of a runner, I can now at least run/jog 10K in relative comfort.. or squeeze out 800m in 3 mins, which probably puts me above average. Anyway, my point is, jog/walk intervals are a decent way to start. But I would suggest that you can build it up at whatever pace you're comfortable with. Sticking with the habit of doing it frequently is more important than hitting weekly targets. Also, different people run/jog at different speeds, and gradually decreasing the walk intervals doesn't necessarily translate to a non-stop 5K at the end of the plan. Another thing that a lot of people find, is that after achieving 5K, it can be tough to take that onto longer distances. I know I did. They key for me was to mix it up. Going back to the walk/run intervals, and sometimes attempting a steady-paced non-stop run, and sometimes doing gym stuff instead (running is pretty hard on the joints, and gym equipment makes it very easy to measure your performance).

cella Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why is it great news? Presumably a brext/boris supporter. I don't really understand what people expect him to do. EU have already said they're not willing to negotiate a different deal (I suppose they might accept some small tweaks). Anybody with a modicum of sense knows that "no deal" would be disastrous, and that we cannot risk reverting to a hard border in Ireland. Brexit seems like an almost impossible conundrum, but Johnson doesn't seem to have suggested concrete solutions, it's all just noise... empty words and patriotism. I have literally no idea what he's planning.. if anything.

Not sure if this is the same everywhere, but on our road, one guy comes round wheeling all the bins out onto the pavement, then the other guys follow in the truck emptying them. Sometimes they return the bins to the front yards, sometimes they do not. This is particularly annoying as it makes it very obvious if a house is empty for any length of time. And of course is pretty inconvenient for buggies, wheelchairs, etc. Often - particularly with the style of houses that have stairs up to the doorway and a semi-basement level below - there is no front yard at all. Not sure what the answer is there.

malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > most of the craft ales are made in beer factories owned by multi nationals, again > feels a bit like what is happening here. You just have to use some common sense. If it's available in Tesco for ?1.70, it's probably going to be a large scale operation. And if it's an American beer widely available in UK, it's hardly going to be a lovingly hand-crafted product. But there are still smaller breweries too... both in UK and US. Surely all beer is from an adapted European recipe. Not sure what the issue is there.

Yeah... I mean I'm probably not going to actually start brewing, as I have nothing like the necessary amount of time available. So for me, the UBrew course was something I did purely out of curiosity and thirst(!) for knowledge.. and I really enjoyed it. But I'd love to follow it up with something where I could maybe dream up my own beer idea, and an expert could help me make it. Another thing I liked about UBrew was the bar.. I am not sure, but it seemed like a mixture of commercial beers and member creations. Had some really interesting beers there.

Ready-Mixed Concrete Delivery - any recommendations ?
fishbiscuits replied to KidKruger's topic in The Lounge
Easymix, Croydon. They can bring ready-mixed concrete to you, and pump it through your house in a flexible pipe. Or mix it on site in a traditional mixer... depends how much you need and what your access is like. -
I think the very hoppy American-style is here to stay, but at the same time, it has been something of a fad and we're a bit over-saturated. I don't think you need more than one tap in a pub selling that style (unless it's a 20-tap beer-nerd bar). I think the flavoured beers are a reaction to that - people looking for something a bit different. Some work, some don't. Earl Grey IPA, or a saison with a hint of Gooseberry - great. Sickly peach lager, or vanilla mocha porter - gross, and you can't even taste the beer. It wouldn't surprise me if traditional cask had a resurgence, though. Some American breweries are starting to import English hops and trying to create versions of "English bitter". American brewers are always looking for a new trend, and with the massive interest in artisan produce now, it wouldn't surprise me if fresh unpasteurised, uncarbonated beer started to make some headway overseas. In answer to Helen - yes brewing courses sound great. I did a course at Ubrew, which was great, but would prefer something where you're encouraged to be a bit creative with hops and other flavourings and create something unique.

I think there are two colonies of ants, both currently trying to access our premises from the garden, via any available gap. One set of wingless, one set of winged. Luckily, copious amounts of various anti-ant products both sides of the perimeter seem to be keeping both at bay for now... If you locate the nest, the worst thing you can do is try to destroy it. It just seems to scatter them, and they form lots of smaller sub-colonies.

Who's having a go at cyclists?? It's a great way of getting about town, especially with the growing cycle infrastructure. Yeah there are some bad cyclists... some bad scooter riders... some bad car drivers... some bad bus drivers... even bad pedestrians! But that's not going to change, is it? Everyone just needs to be careful. Petrol engines, you say? Sounds like the future!

Yes, the Palmerston was def more of a restaurant. (I always consider a "gastropub" as somewhere you'd go to eat, not really just for a drink.. a restaurant in a pub-like setting...) I never considered it over-priced, though. It wasn't cheap.. but good food rarely is. It was successful in an era before gentrification had fully gripped SE22, but people liked the food, and it didn't have much competition (Franklins aside). I wonder what you think a fair price would be, for a three-course meal with quality ingredients? (Curry doesn't count). -
Springer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Woman killed in battersea today on a electric scooter Sad as it is, it does not indicate that they're any more dangerous than a bicycle, for instance. We def need some regulation on these things. Perhaps under certain speed/power they could be treated as bikes and permitted without license. I've just seen one available which can go 40mph... gears, lights, suspension.. how is that not a full motor vehicle?!! (I would love one, though...)

You just need to get a TV aerial installed (if you don't have one already). https://www.freeview.co.uk has the complete list. Personally I don't bother with any broadcast TV (just use streaming), but I know some people still like it...

Rumbero Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The two or three years it takes to complete is a character test as much as > anything else and demonstrates commitment to a career I'm not quite sure why having drivers committed to a career as a cab driver is necessarily a good thing. And bear in mind, it's only a matter of time before that particular job simply doesn't exist any more.

I don't really get the problem with electric scooters on the road or cycle lanes. They go a similar speed to a bicycle. (faster than a slow bike, but slower than a fit/keen cyclist). Why shouldn't they go wherever a bike can go?

uncleglen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > "his cause"....all he has done is highlight the > activities of certain muslims Yes but specifically focusing on Islam is problematic. I would be the first to admit that Islam has more than it's fair share of problems right now (and I am not a fan of religion at the best of times). BUT acting as though it is the only problem this country faces is highly disingenuous, and undoubtedly borne from prejudice. For instance, surely you can think of other institutions which have covered up, or failed to investigate child abuse in recent times? Or terrorist acts committed in the name of other ideologies or religions? I am not attempting to mount some sort of straw-man defence of radical Islam, but I am saying that some perspective is required. As for the hooligan-inspired pseudonym - I am not sure why you bothered mentioning that. Tommy Robinson is still not his name. It just goes to show what an unpleasant character he really is.

Local Mum Robbed - Adys Road.

Oh, and despite the tide of gentrification, this is still south London. Best not to walk around talking on, or looking at your phone. (not everyone agrees, but as far as these kids are concerned, you're basically walking around waving a few hundred quid in the air. So... your choice). -

BUT... if someone else was also mugged at a similar place/time by someone matching that description. Or if a parent noticed a phone in their son's bedroom. Maybe I suppose it could be useful.. Chasing after them is a bad idea though. I've done it myself in the past, and his mate was waiting just down the road. If they're organised, there could be more... maybe with knives. I know these things don't occur to you when the adrenalin is pumping, but it's just a phone. We have people depending on us. -

Yeah I agree, it does seem to have got better. I had put it down to increased competition (Addison Lee and then Uber, etc), so drivers not being able to be so picky. I'd also thought that maybe since I moved to Peckham, perhaps it doesn't sound quite so far away as "Dulwich"! But maybe your point is also pertinent... more money in the area = more customers asking to come here. For balance, I've also had Uber drivers accept the ride, then cancel it at the last minute and drive right past me. But overall it's still a far superior service.

It's not uncommon. I've had drivers refuse to drive down here, or on one occasion, behave abusively for the whole journey because he resented going out of his way. I wonder if those very same drivers were protesting against Uber?
