Tonkotsu is pretty decent. I heard there's also going to be an Indian "small plates" type restaurant, and a new offering by Forza Win in the same building.

I rarely buy "takeaway" beer there, because I'm afraid it stretches the wallet rather. But sitting outside on the bench on a warm evening with a couple of fancy beers is an interesting alternative.

Although I recently tried the hog roast bap (with black pudding and hot sauce), and I enjoyed it... so I'm OK with the offering still. The cynic in me thinks that they've gone hog roast because it's easier to do in bulk, rather than cooking burgers to order, but I like the fact that they're trying something new. I guess time will tell whether it works out.

The Old Jaflong Restaurant to become a Pizza place

We have enough pizza restaurants. On that, I can agree. -

Then on another thread, you have the absolute cheek to say "ignore the usual suspects", and accuse someone else of being "passive aggressive". You're a troll. Sod off and ruin another forum. -

Another look at me foodie type. I called you out for talking rubbish. I don't know where you've been to in Italy... but Naples and Rome are full of pizzerias. Even in the North... Milan, the lakes, the ski resorts. Not just foreign tourists eating there either. Yes Italians eat pizza as a meal, beyond any shadow of a doubt. Admittedly it is considered a fairly basic meal, but it usually is here too. If you were simply opining in a friendly way, I would have been more polite. But you were deliberately attempting to belittle others, which is just nasty. So I called you up on it. You are talking UTTER BOLLOCKS. And if you want me to apologise you're going to have a f*cking long wait. -

A craft beer specialist bar could definitely work in ED. In fact this must be one of the few affluent London boroughs that doesn't have one, despite several failed attempts. Just having good beer isn't enough though, it needs to have the right atmosphere, decent food, accessible location, and prices have to be in the sweet spot. Brick Brewery in Peckham is working really well, now they've moved the actual brewery off-site, and it's just operating as a bar. The food is just right, too. The jury's out on the new Brew By Numbers bar up on Bellenden Rd though. It's nice having a simple tap room to taste some nice beers, but it's a bit too austere to make me want to stay for long. Perhaps they will evolve.

The Old Jaflong Restaurant to become a Pizza place

Italians don't eat pizza for a meal... bloody hell.. why pretend to know about something (in an apparent attempt to insult the tastes of others) when you obviously have no clue what you are talking about. Same old bollocks. -
LV0210 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The See Woo in Greenwich is also good. Yes, it's excellent. Massive range of Chinese ingredients, and also quite a bit of Thai/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese stuff. Fresh fish/seafood straight from the market, significantly cheaper than any fishmonger I've ever seen. Huge range of frozen seafoods too.

New Sweet Shop on Lordship Lane

colville09 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I'm fascinated by the way that this wider national > franchise brand must have been inspired in part by > the success of our own local wonderful, witty and > sadly missed Hope & Greenwood. I think it's a different proposition. H&G had quite a lot of original recipe stuff... fudge, marshmallows, chocolate truffles, and ice creams. This new shop is more about buying in stuff from wholesale and presenting it in a retro style (which is fine... I still love sherbet lemons and wine gums, etc, it's just a bit of a different model). -
That really is a shame. I know I said at the time that it would be a difficult site... but it took a lot of guts to open there, and they gave it a good go. I would have loved to have been proved wrong.

KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Vietnamese shop on Rye Lane opposite Asda. That is called Wang Jia - it is actually Chinese (although I'm sure they have Viet stuff in there too). It's not as good as Wing Tai, but the crazy music pumping out on massive PA speakers can make a visit worthwhile. There is also a Vietnamese shop called Kim Lien, on Peckham High St.

Gala festival in Peckham Rye park
fishbiscuits replied to DoctorM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Would it be better if the stage was in the middle of the park, rather than right at the edge? On the downside, it might mean that the event needed to be moved to a more heavily used section of the park. -
Sainsburys - removed more trolley tills
fishbiscuits replied to tiddles's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I remember some supermarkets having in-trolley scanners back in the 90s. I distinctly recall going to Sainos with my Mum, and being stopped on the way out by a security guard, performing some random checks. She was none too pleased about being picked for the spot check, and proceeded to give the guy a right earful.. I hid round the corner until it was all over! -

Humdinger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The main beer supplier was Fullers, who arent exactly local independent > craft beer brewers. Oh OK. I didn't go yesterday, but went last year.. I seem to recall it being smaller breweries.. and also remember spending a fortune on drinks! I also seem to recall just ONE ice cream seller, with a 50 metre long queue, who had sold out at by 5pm!! -
Yep. Wot Sue and C-bag said.

Humdinger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ?5 for a small can of beer The thing is with Jam On Rye is that it's billed as a food festival as well as a music festival, so not surprised that the beers available are the ?5-a-can craft beers rather than cheaper mass produced varieties. But it would be good if there was a choice. -
Almost as daft as when estate agents tried to re-brand Bellenden Rd & Choumert Rd as "The French Quarter" a few years back. Except, that actually happened.

Wagamama is not great IMO. I'm happier with Monkatsu.

The Old Jaflong Restaurant to become a Pizza place
fishbiscuits replied to DulwichFox's topic in The Lounge
Oh god... stop bloody moaning. Nobody cares if you like pizza or not. -
FWIW, my experience was... hard to get hold of, had to chase several times to get a quote, took aaaages to agree a date to start the work, which was subsequently put back at least once. But when they eventually did the job, they did it very well and are obviously hard workers. I'm glad we stuck with them.

Terroirs is good. But more of a lunch-with-kids place for us (as is the new Japanese on North X Rd), rather than somewhere which justifies the palava of going out for dinner.

Gala festival in Peckham Rye park
fishbiscuits replied to DoctorM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Let's face it, that corner of the Rye is not heavily used. I think people are just complaining for the sake of it, rather than actual loss of amenity. As for getting kids to sleep - now you DO have my sympathy, I know what it's like. But it's only once a year (or twice I suppose, if the Gala festival and Jam On Rye are running on consecutive days again, tbh I'm not sure). It's a bit like your neighbours having a house party.. you can't really complain if it's only a rare occurrence and it doesn't go on ridiculously late.
