Energy saving light bulbs, what a waste of time, throwing out
ianr replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Yes, I've still got several boxes of them (CFL-Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb) all got free from utility companies. Unfortunately they contain small amounts of mercury, so shouldn't be put in household recycling, but taken to a dump that comes within the "WEEE compliance scheme". You can search Southwark's list of such available sites in the area at https://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/recycling/recycling-centres/recycling-locator. It includes Devon Street. -
Or parakeets. Noisy domineering *s.

There's a new 'on time' metric been brought in from July 2017, which looks at accuracy of arrival time to the nearest minute at all stations, rather than the 'right time' one which looks just at endpoints. Its coverage is currently 80% of stations but rising, and it seems to be scheduled for introduction (ie 100%?) in 2019. There are announcements and an example of some preliminary figures using it at https://www.raildeliverygroup.com/media-centre/press-releases/2017/469773044-2017-07-18.html and https://www.networkrail.co.uk/who-we-are/how-we-work/performance/public-performance-measure/punctuality-national-rail-network/. I've not seen it stated explicitly, but the reporting year seems to me to run from 1 April, and is then further split into 13 periods. "Control Period" is another entity entirely; CP6 reportedly covers 2019-24. If Network Rail have access to the source data (they already summarise to TOC and sub-operator level: see eg https://www.networkrail.co.uk/who-we-are/how-we-work/performance/public-performance-measure/) then conceivably a breakdown by station, route, or time-of-day might be obtainable now or in the future, via an FoI request if necessary. Thee are also oodles of statistics published by the ORR, http://orr.gov.uk/statistics. I was surprised to see that the East Dulwch estimated entrances-and-exits fell from 1.71M in 2015-16 to 1.33M in 2016-17. The figures for Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye for both years were 7.00M->7.18M and 7.52M->7.46M respectively.

fines for dropping cigarettes in Brixton, near the station
ianr replied to Jules-and-Boo's topic in The Lounge
> The fines for dropping cigarettes have been around for at least a couple of years now. Since at least 1991, by virtue of ss.87-88 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1990/43/part/IV. Section 98(5A) was added in 2005, to leave no doubt: 98(5A) "Litter" includes (a) the discarded ends of cigarettes, cigars and like products, and (b) discarded chewing-gum and the discarded remains of other products designed for chewing. There are archived articles in Newsbank featuring complaints about FPNs for cigarette ends well before the 2005 amendment. I also came across and downloaded an Independent On Sunday feature article of 4 July 2003 entitled "Fighting the dirty war - What will it take to keep Britain tidy? Perhaps you'd think twice about flicking that cigarette butt out of your car window if you knew it could result in a pounds 50 penalty. JULIA STUART patrols the grimy streets of south London [southwark, to you and me] with the man they call the Enforcer". Access via http://infoweb.newsbank.com/signin/LondonBoroughSouthwark or Southwark libraries webpages, https://www.southwark.gov.uk/libraries/elibrary/emagazines-and-enewspapers (have your Southwark library card number handy). -
Peachpie, could you perhaps check whether his meter reading has been registered or not, and let us know.

Will the keyboard allow you to interrupt the boot process using whichever keys (F2, F4, F8, Esc, Delete, ..) are prescribed for doing so? Yes, do look at the keyboard Device Manager(s) to see if it reports the device(s) are believed to be working properly. It will also permit a request to update the drivers, and should tell you if they're up-to-date. Another diagnostic/prodding alternative would be to try booting from a linux disc or USB stick. Or to try an external USB keyboard. What make of laptop is it, and what operating system? Googling "WhateverLaptopMake laptop keyboard not working" might just bring forth something more specific.

Man arrested in connection with Dulwich Park stabbing
ianr replied to gerry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
apbremer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Pathetic sentence. The bleeding hearts will > doubtless let this scum out to do it again after a > mere six years The law is an ass. According to https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/girlfriend-of-dog-walker-stabbed-in-head-with-screwdriver-in-dulwich-park-weve-got-justice-a3709541.html there is also an extended licence period of five years. I believe that makes it an Extended Determinate Sentence. It means he will serve at least two thirds of the 13 years before release, and will have to satisfy the Parole Board that he is safe to release if he is to be released within the 13 years. Even then he will still be on licence for five years from his earliest date of release, and be eligible for recall if he breaches the terms of the licence within that period. See for example https://insidetime.org/extended-determinate-sentences-and-the-impact-they-have-on-prisoners/ or http://www.prisonreformtrust.org.uk/Portals/0/Extended%20Sentences%20info%20sheet.pdf. I recommend reading the remarks of his girlfriend in the Standard article. -
> you can unsubscribe but it takes 6 months or so to filter through so I've been told That timescale suggests the Mailing Preference Service, which covers only addressed direct advertising: https://www.mpsonline.org.uk/consumer/what_is_mps/. RM operate an opt-out from their own unaddressed junk delivery, https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/293/, but that still leaves all the other leaflet delivery outfits.

I seriously doubt that none of the prescribed buttons (there can be system variations: have you tried eg F4? What machine and OS are you using?), for accessing startup or boot management will function. What you're describing sounds to me like an interrupted attempt to boot. It sometimes happens to me when I've left a second system disk externally attached to the system, which the BIOS then grasps at as the device to boot from. In your case I'm wondering if one of your optical drives still has a disc in it that's causing the trouble. Or possibly the "the sonos software", whatever that is, has commandeered the boot process for its installation, with maybe a virtual drive installed somewhere? Do you have no recovery disk? Another possibility is that your boot sector has got corrupted and needs resetting.

A standard expert view on daytime napping, btw -- last heard on the radio yesterday -- still seems to be to limit any one spell to no more than twenty minutes.

Does having solar panels installed add anything noticeable to a house's likely selling price?

I see that your cardigan account is still live. Have any likely passwords to try come back to you? If so you could try those first. After that, why not try the lost password procedure again and see what happens?

How to get a car moved that is over your drive??
ianr replied to 1st Timer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
> Thanks just called them and they said we have to get given a form > to sign which allows the council permission to ticket anyone who > parks over our drive, however that will mean we then cannot park > over our drive as they will ticket us!!! So we are powerless. That's aiui not the way the legislation works. As I wrote in http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1712143,1712564#msg-1712564: "The London Local Authorities and Transport for London Act 2003, s.14(4) vetoes the issuing of PCNs for parking adjacent to a dropped footway that provides access to a single residential driveway "unless requested to do so by the occupier of the premises." So the way it works, if there are no yellow lines, is that anyone can park in front of a dropped kerb at any time with impunity, unless and until the occupier makes a specific request for action against the vehicle currently blocking the drive. Southwark already know this, as robbin's quotation above from their web page http://www.southwark.gov.uk/parking/guide-to-parking/dropped-kerbs-and-driveways?chapter=3 (last updated 26 September 2017) shows: "If there's no enforceable yellow line, you can park close to this type of driveway without penalty. We only enforce if the occupier of the property makes a specific request." Perhaps there has been some misunderstanding or miscommunication that needs to be resolved. They certainly have a need and right to check the validity of the request, but that's all. So don't feel pressured into entering any unnecessary and disadvantageous ongoing administrative agreement that, as far as I can see, they would have no right to require. -

I had one from RM for a parcel last Friday, but couldn't swear for certain that the bell wasn't rung, given that it was timed at 7.34 am. But I did notice that the postie's name/id part had just a slightly diagonal dash in it. I've no idea if that's the identifier used by one particular postie, or just an anonymous dash. What's on yours?

Being on bail would be sufficient.
