Bring back polytechnics
womanofdulwich replied to womanofdulwich's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
My personal experience was that I knew I wanted to be a surveyor, and my degree was specialised to exempt me from the professional exams, as it was monitored by the professional body. most students on my course became surveyors when they graduated.same for those in hotel and catering-and civil/structural engineering, planning and housing- we all did sandwich courses- the degree was a means to an end. Not sure about those that did english lit etc- whether polys even ran those types of courses? i just wonder if making polytechnics into universities was such a good idea- when originally they were mainly vocational courses, not just a way of keeping people out of unemployment for 3-4 years. all our courses were 20-40 timetabled hours a week. have i got rose tinted glasses? -
we went to las vegas via chicago last month with AA, agree about the age of air stewards, but the planes were great- one was only on its 4th flight.

Help - rod for own back!!
womanofdulwich replied to littleEDfamily's topic in The Family Room Discussion
might help if you got out of your routine a bit by going on holiday to a differnt house with different cot etc and then you could start again. do you have to drive to school? is there a different way? cant you take her for a long walk?we used to go round the park for about an hour every morning/afternoon. lots of fresh air etc?i rememeber when i had had enough i used to drive to a park and then park up and read a book while baby slept in car-not recommended, but we all have days like that. I think the day time sleeps while you take her for a walk are a good start- then she will not be so tired and hysterical later- get her temper right first- then take on the " going to bed in cot at bedtime". may be in her own room? you can work you way up to the rest later.Try and get your partner to help you with the settling in cot at night . -
ice skating? ( a 19 year old? maybe the sales................)

? technically only smokeless fuel. practically, dry wood or coal, broken up pallets, old bank statements. garages and diy shops sell coal/ wood. be careful your fireplace is safe first though- you can get a chimney sweep to clean it- make sure you are not going to kill yourselves with toxic smoke..

taking day off to care for sick child?
womanofdulwich replied to busymum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
only done this once ( in 18 years),as looked on very dimly by work colleagues. In fact I came in to central london in car with sick child on back seat with sick bucket, took my work and brought it home. quite often sick children are much easier to look after at home and work than if they are well. I really think it depends on the work culture where you are. of course annual leave is very precious. would rather take unpaid if i could. I think you need an army of back up carers/ family. But working at weekends to make up is always a good one. I know this is not always possible for everyone. I think you have to share this with your partner where you can. -

Conservative plans to use the unemployed as free labour
womanofdulwich replied to Brendan's topic in The Lounge
I cant help thinking if the street cleaning was 9.30 - 3pm mon - fri, then a lot of people with kids at school would apply to do the job, paid. why cant employers think along these lines anyway? there is nothing wrong with cleaning streets-outside job- meeting lots of people- school friendly hours..... -
Keeping a toddler happy on a long car trip?
womanofdulwich replied to Kes's topic in The Family Room Discussion
really would wonder about a motorway- so hard to stop if you have to- try and use some A roads too- and have at least a break every 2 hours- little walk etc ( oh so easy to say i know). at least if you look out of hte window on an a road- you canlook at the cows etc etc. -
i think this is somehting you can support at home your self- with a book to guide you if you need it- it is good fun . go to a good book shop and look at the choices, w h smiths usually has a good selection if you cant find one locally. keep it light and fun though- lots of reading together at bedtime and weekends. You could ask the school to stear you on teaching guides.

just keep using it? If you have a deepfat fryer dont you just keep using it and topping it up? or if never again can't you use it tablespoon at time to fry your onions etc in? or maybe you use it to soak dried bread in to feed to the birds ( not an expert though)?

If we went back to polytechnics, as well as universtities, wouldn't the course fees there be much cheaper, leading to much more vocational courses with skills that employers want and jobs for graduates? They would not be carrying the academic research that the older universities do. I can't see that the course fees would be anything like ?9k. Hasn't the education for educations sake gone too far? Just a thought. What do others think?

try the velodrome?

The tv coverage made them looks a shambolic lot. I doubt it helps their cause.

A MASSIVE dilemma re parents and driving

My duvet is 13.5, I no longer have a baby but why is the sleeping bag 2.5? I have a 9 tog and 4.5 tog that i velcro together. Even my teenagers are sleeping in 9 tog duvets now- but if it stays this cold they wil go to 13.5 tog too ( which they have since they were 3 yrs old).

Son just doesn't 'get' maths - any advice?
womanofdulwich replied to chrism's topic in The Family Room Discussion
i think they sometimes find it hard to switch on to maths, they think it is boring/ see no relevance/ have no confidence. I would try and get a personal tutor if you can afford it- if you try your self it can all get too personal. my eldest son was like this, but now he plays a sport where mental maths is important his maths - pb's times , averages etc are all so much more important to him. We had a tutor for 2 terms once a week in year 11- but i had done loadsof those carol vorderman/ letts books- it just never stayed in his head long enough.
