John was a local legend and was rightly the cover 'star' of the first issue of the "Dulwich Diverter" newspaper two and a half years ago. At the paper's launch party (I write the crossword for it), he and I had a big chat, mainly about late 60s West Coast music as he was wearing a Moby Grape t-shirt in the photo on the front of the paper. Lovely man and he'll be much missed.

Almost certainly not this season. Even if Meadow were to cave in suddenly and let the club play there on acceptable terms, the pitch is in a right state and would take months to get up to standard. Think next season at the earliest ? which is a shame, but the club will survive and it will return.

It's the wood above Sainsburys car park and next to the adventure playground. There's a small path that leads from it through to Green Dale fields.

There are lots of bats along the railway line between East Dulwich and North Dulwich. They prefer 'tree highways' rather than open spaces to feed along. We did a bat walk in Green Dale fields and Dog Kennel Hill Wood a couple of years ago and the detector picked up common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and noctule bats.

Hmmm, the heatwave makes it sound more like cracking in the subsoil and below due to the moisture content decreasing ? which is the cause of most London subsidence. And birch roots are very shallow. Further investigation need, I think.

There's one of those bikes chained up outside our house. The Ofo bike people say they're not supposed to be left chained up and they'll come and retrieve it. It's been there for about five weeks, so I've given them one last warning to pick it up or I'll report them to the council for dumping it.

The only councillors who've ever responded to me in 24 years are James Barber (when he wasn't a councillor in my ward) and two Tory councillors in Village Ward (the late Toby Eckersley and Michael Mitchell), all three of whom were extremely good at sorting out the issues involved. As someone who's not either a LibDem or a Tory, I find that depressing and an indictment of local government, particularly in Labour-dominated London.
