  1. I'm not sure whether to immmensely impressed they got Peter Stormare to appear in those, or actually quite sad that someone of his cult status has now sullied himself with something like this. Mildly amusing.
  2. This week's New Statesmen Today's Metro And news of the next project from the maker's of The Wire in today's Shortlist freebie-zine Wire-tastic!
  3. jrussel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I don't understand why you ask whether French > twenty-somethings are similar to German or > Spanish? Really? You don't say.
  4. In honour of our favourite poster JRussel: Men at Work - Land Down Under
  5. And those Pacific Islanders! I tell you.... Can you really say you can tell the difference between a Tongan and a Fijian?! I can't. And I'm mad about it. They come over here with their polite manners and dignified social behaviour and do their "activities". If I ever see one, well, I'll probably come on here again and tell you all about it.
  6. Don't know any French twenty-somethings. Are they similar to the Germans and the Spanish though. Why do you even care? Are the Aussies and Kiwi's particularly vociferous in their objections to you cutting down trees?
  7. I know I'm gonna regret this but.... ...your opening assumption is wrong. The stereotype of Aussie/Kiwi bar workers is just that. Sure, they exist, but to imply the entire diaspora as lager-swilling idiots is simply naive. So the difference between them is moot. What's the difference between any bunch of young-twenty somethings with money in their pockets away from home and up for a good time? Regardless of nationality.
  8. Bon3yard, can I borrow series 4 please. I can come & collect it from you if that's ok. Also, today's Guardian has a great Wire article.
  9. The woman could eat an apple through a letterbox. Curtsey? Christ, do we still do that for royalty? I'm surprised some patsy from HR hasn't come around telling you what's expected. She likes lighthouses and hairspray - that's the limit of my knowledge.
  10. I got a flyer for this at the weekend. Had a nice chat with the guy and he told me about their proposals: Food will be local, seasonal and some organic. Menus will change regularly to reflect this. Wines will be from Green & Blue He'll have real ales from next week. He's looking for a return to a real pub atmosphere from what it was before. The flyer also gave you 20% off food. Could be great if it lives up to the idea.
  11. Well it's a whole lot more fun than the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group. And I've not made that up! But, it's not that interesting - aside from the odd jolly and some free beer. You have to be a MP or a Peer though - and that is dull!
  12. I hear you with the whole "tsar" thing, MP. I've got a feeling it's a meedja term though. The guys real title will be something rather dull like "Administrative Oversight Controller" but that never looks good on paper does it. "TSAR!!" on the other hand reeks of imperial presence. But, yes, the semantic implications of that one haven't really been thought through.... On a lighter note in the American campaign, the Colbert Report (like a funnier version of the Daily Show) has been running a thematic where you have to make McCain more exciting. He gave a speech behind a green background the other week and it's allowed the photoshop nerds out there to play havoc with it; with hilarious results. Link
  13. Well the petition was never the real aim. The BERR Select Committee hae re-opened the inquiry into PubCos and if all goes well the OfT could do the same. That's the important, decision-making bit. And louisiana is certainly correct in her assumption that EDMs are rather a waste of time yet MPs sign hundreds each year and they are spoken of in the press as some great parliamentary procedure when they're nothing of the sort. Best bet if you want to support this campaign is to write to your MP expressing support for the campaign. There is another/joint campaign currently running out of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group highlighting the cultural importance of the great British Pub. So, all is not lost..... Hopefully Mark or scor46 can update us with more details soon. Best of luck guys.
  14. I thought the amnesia had rendered this thread forgotten.
  15. Regardless, 9 litres of dirt won't do anybody any good.
  16. 'Fraid not - it's a volume rather than a weight. And 4 pecks make a bushel. Weirdly in Scotland (and this is all from a well known internet encyclopedia) a peck could be either 9 litres or 13 litres according to what you were measuring. Very reassuring stuff.
  17. Stubborn, obstinate, jerky eating, SOBs! Bloody drawn. After all that excitement earlier on. Pah. I'm going back to Twenty-20!
  18. @ MM For a decent fish restaurant (albeit a French one) try the Lobster Pot in Kennington.
  19. Honestly, and this isn't an attack on James or anyone else in particular, but if I hear one more person ask for an M&S I'm going to suffocate myself in some excessive cardboard and shrink-wrapped clingfilm. Argh! Dim-sum would be good. I know its far from authentic but Ping-Pong in town is quite lovely. The steak in Franklin's is pretty special so I'm covered for that. I really can't think of anything that we don't have or that isn't a short journey away. Cajun/soul food would be lovely but can't see it surviving. I'd like Le Chardon to be a bit more rustic bistro-esque and have prices to match. Otherwise I'm pretty happy. Edit: I see a NYC style steak-house is being mooted. Witha proper brolier then it could be good. But no wagyu or USDA meat please, we can do amazing beef from British farms.
  20. As are Bar Story - "cafe/bar experience" was the wording I think. It can't be being taken over by all of them can it!?
  21. First vaguely interesting thing: About the ease of calculation for metric measurements, under Napoleon the French had a revolutionary calendar where there were twelve months, each divided into three ten-day weeks called d?cades. The tenth day, d?cadi, replaced Sunday as the day of rest and festivity. The five or six extra days needed to approximate the solar or tropical year were placed after the months at the end of each year. Each day was divided into ten hours, each hour into 100 decimal minutes and each decimal minute had 100 decimal seconds. Thus an hour was more than twice as long as a conventional hour; a minute was slightly longer than a conventional minute; and a second was slightly shorter than a conventional second. Clocks were manufactured to display this decimal time, but it did not catch on and mandatory use was officially suspended April 7, 1795, although some cities continued to use decimal time as late as 1801. Second much more interesting thing: A cool site showing the neat-o and somewhat crazy world of scale Kinda blows your mind.
  22. Feeling cocky all of a sudden are we, Brendan? Only nine wickets to try and hold out for the rest of the day on an increasingly soft pitch. Dullest. day. ever. Boycott'll love this.
  23. .
  24. @ Strawbs - at least I now know I'm taller than 164cms!!
  25. Considering I studied metric for all of my school years I still measure my height in feet and inches. I have nooo idea what it might be in centimetres. Like an earlier poster, hot weather in faranheit (100 degrees = hot) but cold weather in celsius (-anything = bloody cold) Weight in either - stones or kg. All lower weights in kgs and grams. I've no idea what an ounce is, although an 1/8th was quite common at uni.
