  1. Is it important to be outraged?
  2. I saw the placards and thought that if they really believed that there own followers were 'going to paradise' and our soldiers were 'going to hell' that they would be pleased about it, thus negating the concept of it being a protest. Surely more of a celebration of their own fate with a bit of sympathy for ours would have been more appropriate.
  3. If we were brought up with the concept that if you don't have a job you can still get by with government support but you have to put some hours in as part of the deal, that sounds reasonable don't it? The difficulty is when the government has to justify itself when introducing the ideas as a new concept because it then sounds bullying or patronising.

  6. Brendan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We should pay from education so that the next > generation can benefit from it and benefit from a > world where education is free. . > > Or is the idea that we should leave the world a > better place than we found it no longer valid? How do people who dont go to university benefit from people who do? I agree that education should be free but who pays for it? I do think we should try hard to leave the world a better place than we find it...yes yes yes.
  7. I think the detail of the changes mean that 'working class' students will be more protected while the rest of us get hit. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's hard to attack the idea that those who benefit from education should pay pay for that education. Also it's fair to say that the price of education isnt going up with these cuts its who pays that has changed. This is all part of the squeeze innit? VIVA THE NUANCED REVOLUTION COMRADES

  9. Both sides are asserting their rights. One to sack, the other to strike. The argument is about who has the power not really about changes in shift patterns. It's testes at dawn. The Suburban Pirate- taking moderation to the extreme
  10. This is from the fire brigade link posted above "Our real issue is that we know the LFB plan to close Fire Stations on a 'risk based' basis and this is the first step towards it. They want to run the Fire Brigade on fewer fire engines to save money. This means moving fire engines around London according to fire statistics, thereby closing some Stations at night in areas where calls are fewer. Their own figures however, show that most fire deaths and injuries happen at night." I dont know how the fire brigade should be run other than 'risk based'? Why would they close a station at night if there is more demand at that time. I doubt any manager is that stupid. I detect willful misunderstanding or misinformation.
  11. Is section 188 something about the rights of wearing a fireman's uniform inappropriately?
  12. Good point Steve, I call it bullying. If you are small fry the producer warns you dont try and sell. If you are a celeb they suck up. It's the corruption of celebrity.
  13. Moflo You have my support but does that mean that you are justified in hanging on to working practices that are being tightened up? These are not normal financial times, the shit has hit the fan and flexible has to be the response to getting squeezed. As a self employed person my income has been cut by 50% in the last 12 months, no pension, no union, no boss to blame just half pay. It is true that your job is more important than mine but does that mean your response to the economic meltdown should differ from the way others are responding? 17. Ah a bit of closure...nice. The next thing to work out is at what income level do we withdraw child benefit. Any ideas?
  18. Hey IV I think you have proved that you can afford having a big family.
  19. I always thought, me and the wife that makes two of us to do the work,so two kids is what we can handle, support and afford. I never liked the idea of having more kids than I can handle. I loved Ideocracy..spot on.
  20. I think having lots of kids is a choice. Having one might be a 'right' but having loads is ....ummm yeah a choice. Calling that choice a 'lifestyle choice' gives it an edge but it's still a choice to have a big family.
  21. Ah Dulwich Dulwich...and parts of Peckham... I salute you. I feel it is my duty to turn ambivalence into an artform
  22. Do you remember the Monty Python sketch where the city bastard character is asked to give to charity and thinks it's an investment and cant get the idea of giving. Well this topic reminds me of that sketch. The unfairness of giving and not getting anything in return.
  23. I trust Harry and Paul to get it right (not right on) but right.
  24. Its a Daily Mail Moment for me on this one. http://www.thesuburbanpirate.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/DAILYMAILMO_AW-e1286313745943.jpg
