Is the Stop The War Coalition a waste of time?
Santerme replied to reggie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes is the answer, it hasn't achieved anything -
I divorced after 22 years of marriage. To sort out the finances we sat down at the kitchen table and came to a reasonable arrangement. There were no third parties involved so, as much as it can be, it was perfectly amicable. I married in Canada three years ago, which is a country that allows pre nups, but we both decided not to as we felt it would get things off on the wrong foot.

Mr Maybe at DKH used to write your name in reverse on a hairbrush and imprint it on your backside. I was caned a boarding school, the effect lasted as long as the pain. My essays on the life of a blade of grass and the inside of a table tennis ball, were a much more effective deterrent having to be done over a precious weekend.

University- Is it all it's cracked up to be?
Santerme replied to Narnia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks Ann Languages are a good inroad to many careers. My youngest brother did French and German, he leaves the service next year and is joining the UN in New York. -
Unbelievable!

I still think it depends on the University you attend, I am not a great fan of dumbing down in order to increase the numbers of graduates. My first two years were very much a social event, my final year became very intense as a result. I was sponsored through by the Govt and had my career path mapped out. So to me it was the vehicle I needed. My eldest daughter's first term at University College, London starts tomorrow.... I guess I will know shortly how that works out. -
The Carnival Is Over, Summer Is No More....
Santerme replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
It is glorious weather in the South West, unbroken blue sky and set fair for the village cricket this afternoon. I am torn between a lazy day with a good book and the sound of leather on willow or a trip to West Bay for a fish and chips, this late in the season the beach will be locals only. -

I used to live in Germany Cologne is probably the easiest to get to by car although you pass Aachen it is not worth stopping there from my experience If going further afield Heidleburg or Aschaffenburg are awesome I went to Aachen Xmas before last and came back through Lille in France which has a great Xmas market and Fair and you can do Lille on the Eurostar

My question to Americans is always, would you have declared war on Germany after Pearl Harbour? Remember it was Germany who declared war on the United States. I am not so sure they would have

Lessons were 'interesting' and ranged from complete mayhem through moderate mayhem to something creeping up on normality. Which was a total 180 degree aboutface from my previous experience. But being away at boarding school, if you cope, makes you quite psychologically tough and adaptable For the most part I was untroubled by the chaos around me. I developed a quick wit, which came to my aid several times in moments of possible confrontation. I played Rugby and participated in Athletics for the school, so I was not a typical geek. It was, to my mind now, a thoroughly good experience. I was lucky to have a teacher who recognised I had potential and pushed me to do well, there were many more like me, equally capable, who slipped through the net or just found conforming to the unruly behaviour more meaningful at the time. If truth be known I could easily have taken that path, I just knew I was better than that, mainly because my grandparents (my parents were deployed overseas)and one teacher in particular told me I was.

I learned survival skills quite quickly, but boarding school is a good preparation for that. In fact both establishments set me up very well for my subsequent career. It all seems a little surreal today thinking back, but it definitely was not for the faint hearted! Mr George was an English teacher, he was one of the few there that actually made a difference. I guess you were there for the Ali visit?

Jah Lush Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Santerme Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Did you go to the now sadly missing Tulse Hill > > School? > > I went there and there's nothing sad to miss about > it. I respectfully disagree. I went to a boarding school from 1969 to 1975 and then got the culture shock of my life as a member of Faraday House at Tulse Hill from '75 to '77. A teacher from British Guyana called Mr George took pity on me as I was not really working to my potential. I ended up with a place at Durham University, pretty much because of him. I am still in touch with a few of the people from there and most of them have done really well for themselves..... You manifest your own destiny, THS taught me that.

Just back from two weeks in New York and New England, yesterday and today have shaped up well in darkest Dorset. An Indian summer would be ideal!

Did you go to the now sadly missing Tulse Hill School?
