Shed some light...(questions you never knew the answers too)
Brendan replied to bean_and_legumes's topic in The Lounge
Why does a series of Zs indicate that someone is asleep? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz Is it some kind of onomatopoeia? I have never heard a sleeping person make a sound that sounds like Zzzzzzzzzzz. And is it peculiar to English or does Zzzzzzzzzzz mean that someone is asleep in Portuguese, French or Swahili too? -
Let?s not get too highbrow here. I?m reading a comic. Frank Miller?s Sin City vol. 5 which is one of the stories out of the film, the one involving Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba. Well that and a book on Thomas Steer the engineer who built Liverpool?s first dock but that?s for work so it doesn?t really count.

I?m probably getting brit-pop confused with the whole Stone Roses, Manchester indie scene.

Re. The Pixies. As a teenager I got my hands on Trompe le Monde just after it was released. I had never heard anything like it. Within a week I had their entire back catalogue and became a bit obsessed with the band. So much so that I had to ration myself to only listen to 1 Pixies album a day. In my opinion they were the most innovative of the underground American ?alternative? bands of the late 80s early 90s before the whole thing exploded into the monster that was Grunge. You probably experienced it differently here as the whole thing was kinda overshadowed by Brit-pop. Or at least that is the impression I get. Funnily I never liked the Stone Roses. I always thought they were overrated and I couldn?t see the point of 5 minute long intros. Over the last few months though there has been a ?best of? album on my ipod and I have actually started to get into them.

That sounds like a very similar view to other people I know who work for them.

I?ve always loved the mighty boosh but then I do have a taste for the absurd. Not particularly fond of Harry Hill though.

And as the tax burden gets larger the delivery of public services gets worse. So where the fuck is all our money going?

Well if you intend on only living unitl you're 70. Personally I'm aiming for at least 120.

I wasn?t getting defensive Sean just pointing out that even when you have a very clearly identifiable problem there is an inability/unwillingness on the part of GPs to do anything about it. It has happened to me a few times. You have to actually fight the NHS for treatment. They seem to put as much as possible in the way of you getting treatment as they possibly can. I also don?t see why just because it is a public service there should be any excuse for it not delivering anything other than the best care possible.

Fox and Cat fight on Heber Road Friday night
Brendan replied to edenial's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Surely an urban fox hunt would have to be carried out by men in hoodies on those buzz-bike, Japanese style mopeds preceded by a pack of staffeis with spiked collars. Instead of a horn it would be heralded by some hippiddy hop blasted from a mobile phone and as the hunt comes by girls in track suits would walk around offering trays of turkey twizzlers to the riders. -
I am anything but a hypochondriac and I have gone to the GP with a real compliant, being in constant pain to a point where I couldn?t do my job, and then been faced with a blank-faced, grunting, GP who pushes a button on their computer and then stares at you with a ?and so what should I do about it? expression. The service the NHS offer is inadequate, simple as that. As the people who pay for it we have every right to say so. In fact I would say that we have a duty to say so.

Anna please don?t take this personally it is not meant as an attack on doctors, but as someone who has had direct experience of another medical system as well as the NHS I can honestly say that the quality of care received from GPs on the NHS is piss poor. I have luckily never had to visit an NHS hospital so I cannot comment on that. GPs however don?t seem to be able or willing to diagnose or treat anything. I don?t know whether this is down to inability, administrative constraints or institutionalised jadedness but as a patient you are almost forced to go private in many circumstances. I use private health care, even though I can barely afford it, because it is often the only way of getting decent treatment. This irks me because in principle I think all private health care should be illegal as a country like Britain should be able to deliver the best care possible through a national health system funded by proportionate taxation. I am not saying that NHS staff are not dedicated and don?t work hard. I am friends with a number of nurses and midwives who are very dedicated. The problem is that the service the public should be getting is not being delivered. I think this is an issue that NHS staff should be just as upset about as the rest of us.

Bookstall in ED Warehouse Closing (Lounged)
Brendan replied to Ultraconsultancy's topic in The Lounge
Come on folks, life?s too short. Anyone can come on here and say what they will but just remember this is a community forum and the folks on here are your neighbours, the people you share the bus with, the people in the pub etc. They are what make up the community that you have chosen to live in. -
Can?t think of anything I can firmly say that I will never do again but I will actively avoid doing the following again: Ikea That tea room on LL A night out in Clapham A night out in the West End A night out in Shoreditch MacDonald?s The Bishop Borough market The No.12 bus at rush hour Going to South Africa via Kenya

I hate that fuking marketing speak crap that they have to use. Do you think it means buggerall to an elderly person who finds themselves ill and in need of care? Care that is, not ?customer service? a ?clinician?, ?excellence? or whatever other confounding bumph they prattle off to smokescreen their ineptitude.

Am I wrong in thinking that I am not the only person who has a remedial knowledge of human physiology and is generally aware of how their body should be functioning? I?ll decide whether I need to see the doctor or not. I am the one paying their fucking salary after all.

I'm with you! I knew it was closing but didn't realise it was so soon. It will indeed be missed. Closest alternative for a similar (by no means the same though) type of place is the Drum.

I have never actually met anyone with the same name as me. That What?s in the Name website says there is one other person in the UK with my name although I have a suspicion that they are both me and that I have just confounded some bureaucratic system somewhere. A google search only reveals me and another guy who appears to be the drummer in a band based in Johannesburg. I do have a story though: As a student I worked in a video shop and one night this bloke came in and asked if he could take out a video on his son?s account. ?No problem sir? said I. Being a clerk of the friendly and helpful persuasion (Achieved by ensuring that I stuck to a strict regime of regular caffeine and THC intake.). ?And what would your son?s name be?? ?Brendan Wotsisname.? said he. ?Is it fuk!? said I. ?That?s my name that is and I know not of anyone else in this two cortina town that shares my magnificent moniker.? ?No really it is.? he remonstrated, ?I named him myself.? ?Listen bucko,? said I, ?This is surely a ruse on your part to take advantage of my kind nature and make off with my gracious employer?s only copy of Bikini Babes in Space, leaving me done up for the crime. Now offski before I set the hound on you.? I looked over my shoulder at Sebastian my fearless bulldog who accompanied me on nightshifts. He opened one eye, gave me a ?not likely? look, rolled over, broke wind and continued to chase cats in his sleep. ?Please? said the suspect customer, ?I swear to all the gods and on the graves of all my dead relatives that I am being honest. If you just make pointy clicky there with that computer you will see that my son does in fact have an account here and that, no matter how unlikely it may seem, he shares your name.? ?hmmm? I said, one of those drawn out suspicious hmms, and I made with the pointy clicky on the computer. And do you know what? There it was, as clear as day, another fellow with my name. ?Bugger me!? I exclaimed. ?No thanks? said the now valued customer. ?But I may tell my other son, who has recently adopted an alternative lifestyle, that you also offer such services.? So he paid his 16 Shekels (as it was half-price Tuesday) and disappeared off into the night, with the only copy of Bikini Babes in Space, never to be seen again. When it came to the monthly stock-take and the only film of the Astronaut Swimwear genre was missing I related this story to Big Vince (the owner of Vince?s All Night Video). In reply to which the fair and magnanimous Big Vince made liberal with terms like ?Slacker?, ?Smartarse? and ?Smelly mutt? before we came to a mutual decision that in order to grow as individuals it would be best if we went our separate ways.
