How Ashbourne has changed in the past few years. Once upon a time you could actually park on it, without getting involved in a "dropped kerb" argument with some new arrival.

I have witnessed guardian reader / upstanding people damage cars that have dared poke a bumper across someone recently dropped kerb.Irrelevant that there was plenty of access to the paved garden area at the time, and no one was actually blocked in.

Still, its better to scratch someones car when they are on LL broweing amongst the overpriced tat , than to actually SPEAK to them when they get get back. Thye could have KNIFE on them you know.

There are some long term residents that its probably best not to irk too much if you get what I mean

Doubt it's connected, but I got quite a fright when I turned into Melford Road off LL early on Sunday to find a smashed up car halfway across the street (near the corner by that block of flats with all the wood). Looked very much like someone had lost control, smashed into the parked cars and then legged it...

It looks to have been moved to the side of the road now, but first time I had seen it (and was lightly steaming, so I assumed a fairly recent addition to the area). Perhaps a repeat performance?

There's another one up by the corner with Underhill Road though which I've phoned the Council about before.

Its a bit worrying to read this because my car was damaged at the weekend, I went to get into it on Saturday morning to find someone had smashed the rear window screen and tried to steal one of my alloys :(

I dont have an anger Ex so I haven't got a clue whose done it and no point in telling the police as there isn't much to show apart from broken glass so they won't be interested....This is now the 3rd time my car has been damaged in East Dulwich since I moved here last year, last time someone slashed my tyre.

Either I've really upset someone (god knows who) or my car is jinxed and bad luck! (6)

Now looking to move out of the area when my tenacy agreement ends, as I have never experienced such bad car crime.

Sorry to hear it nat - stuff happens sometimes - may not be your fault - this is London after all, and you have to accept the odd scrape and scratch, but not usually broken wiondows unless the crackheads have been in the area - these usually go in spates.

Tyre slashing is usually personal - as I was saying, even the chattering classes do it to their neighbours xcars now , rather than speak to them and sort a problem out.

nuttynat19 - there are plenty of places in London with far worse car crime, I guess you've just been very unlucky. I'm intrigued though, do you have a "posh" car? My car's always been fine apart from one little accidental knock, but it is a bit of a heap and I can't imagine anyone vandalising it out of jealousy!
Bizarrely, we had someone walk over our [not posh] car a couple of months back, I'd guess kids mucking about - noticeable because the car was so dirty that the evidence was plain to see - I should've taken a couple of moulds! A couple of small dents which is fairly irritating. Don't know if they 'played' the whole road.

you need to be really pi$$ed off with the flash git who owns it."

"Poor thieves and vandals. I blame the car owners."

My God I didn't know this forum had such vicious and unthinking contributors. The "Flash git" happens to be a nice quiet unassuming guy who seems to believe in all the right things. Why should he be to blame?

Of course Keef & Maurice could be the proud possessors of a very dry sense of irony and if this is the case then I most humbly apologies.

If not, then shame on you two.

jonsuissy - I understand why you might think that but 2 different examples there methinks

Keef's post (as I understand it) was just to clarify the likelyhood that it would be someone known to the owner for a car to be damaged so badly - he's not condoning it but explaining that when things gets personal they can be more viscious than random acts

Maurice on the other hand (again, as I understand it) has continued his tone from other threads wherby he seems to think we are all on the side of criminals. Personally I can't find ANYTHING on this thread to back that up but I could be blind

Sean - yes I got that bit (and can understand why he says that) its the "flash git" bit I thought was totally outrageous.

MP - yes he is entitled to make his point - doesn't make very good reading though.

I was so disappointed to read those 2 original comments, I thought this was an enlightened house.

Anyway, let's move on.

    • While it is good that GALA have withdrawn their application for a second weekend, local people and councillors will likely have the same fight on their hands for next year's event. In reading the consultation report, I noted the Council were putting the GALA event in the same light as all the other events that use the park, like the Circus, the Fair and even the FOPR fete. ALL of those events use the common, not the park, and cause nothing like the level of noise and/or disruption of the GALA event. Even the two day Irish Festival (for those that remember that one) was never as noisy as GALA. So there is some disingenuity and hypocrisy from the Council on this, something I wll point out in my response to the report. The other point to note was that in past years branches were cut back for the fencing. Last year the council promised no trees would be cut after pushback, but they seem to now be reverting to a position of 'only in agreement with the council's arbourist'. Is this more hypocrisy from 'green' Southwark who seem to once again be ok with defacing trees for a fence that is up for just days? The people who now own GALA don't live in this area. GALA as an event began in Brockwell Park. It then lost its place there to bigger events (that pesumably could pay Lambeth Council more). One of the then company directors lived on the Rye Hill Estate next to the park and that is likely how Peckham Rye came to be the new choice for the event. That person is no longer involved. Today's GALA company is not the same as the 'We Are the Fair' company that held that first event, not the same in scope, aim or culture. And therein lies the problem. It's not a local community led enterprise, but a commercial one, underwritten by a venture capital company. The same company co-run the Rally Event each year in Southwark Park, which btw is licensed as a one day event only. That does seem to be truer to the original 'We Are the Fair' vision, but how much of that is down to GALA as opoosed to 'Bird on the Wire' (the other group organising it) is hard to say.  For local people, it's three days of not being able to open windows, As someone said above, if a resident set up a PA in their back garden and subjected the neighbours to 10 hours of hard dance music every day for three days, the Council would take action. Do not underestimate how distressing that is for many local residents, many of whom are elderly, frail, young, vulnerable. They deserve more respect than is being shown by those who think it's no big deal. And just to be clear, GALA and the council do not consider there to be a breach of db level if the level is corrected within 15 minutes of the breach. In other words, while db levels are set as part of the noise management plan, there is an acknowledgement that a breach is ok if corrected within 15 minutes. That is just not good enough. Local councillors objected to the proposed extension. 75% of those that responded to the consultation locally did not want GALA 26 to take place at all. For me personally, any goodwill that had been built up through the various consultations over recent years was erased with that application for a second weekend, and especially given that when asked if there were plans for that in post 2025 event feedback meetings (following rumours), GALA lied and said there were no plans to expand. I have come to the conclusion that all the effort to appease on some things is merely an exercise in show, to get past the council's threshold for the events licence. They couldn't give a hoot in reality for local people, and people that genuinely care about parkland, don't litter it with noisy festivals either.
