Go to the van on NCR, brilliant meat, always friendly and very rarely lenghthy queues. They are in the process of buying one of those long, French-style vans and will also be there 6 days a week. Gave up on WR quite a while ago - the weekends are too short to spend that long waiting to be barged in the queue and abused by the staff.
why cant meat be ordered over the phone and picked up a bit like the organic veg box type thing ,funnily they wont take credit cards or cheqies in wr which is odd in this day and age ? they could do all the orders late friday and they could be collected with a ticket on sat morning .......ie .5 of akilo of mince one fr chicken a dozen eggs a large goose stuffed with other wild game birds till we reach a lark .......143 pounds please ...blah blah

You can get meat delivered much like the organic box schemes.


Abel & Cole (probably the most prominent of the veg box co's) sell meat.


So too do Riverford. I have heard good things of the Real Meat Company. As long as your happy for your steak to sit on the doorstep till you get home you'd be fine.


To stay on topic the sign in WR says they do take cheques. A bit achronistic I know, but cards would slow the whole thing considerably. People complain about a five minute queue now, with cards it would five times worse.

Cards don't take any more time than cash with chip and pin machines, and certainly nowhere near the time that cheques take to write. I can understand WR not wishing to pay the fees charged by credit card companies, and that's more likely to be the reason than transaction speed.

C & P machines would not really be practical in WR because, on Saturdays at least, they have 9 (or more?) people serving and, in order to keep the queue moving at its usual swift pace, you'd need at least 9 machines - which would clutter up the place no end. Cash transactions are traditional with bucthers' shops I think - and the vast majority of WR customers know it's a cash place and prepare themselves accordingly beforehand.


And if the lovely guys and women at WR really were habitually abusive then there must an awful lot of people around ED well into that kind of thing.....


I've nothing against the guy with the van on NCR - he was of course there before WR opened their shop - but I'd be amazed if he could make that pay 6 days a week....

However, obviously not everyone does prepare themselves beforehand, and we are supposed to be moving to being a cashless society. It's quite possible for busy places to have a number of wireless card machines in operation too. There seems to be a fair number of people saying they'd like the business to take cards, so they made find it useful to consider that some change may be advisable.

really suprised to hear this, boys and girls always lovely to me, even gave me a bag with their name on it thought i was the only one till i looked one saturday at the people up and down lordship lane. the only complaint i have got is there too busy so go really early 8.30 twice a week some times there are different things going on in our life which might not make us a cherful person but i always find i treat people like i like to be treated myself and most days its all good keep smiling as we never know what around the corner and we have only got one life xx p

Don't know if this was at all aimed at me, but can I just say that I for one have never said they are all rude, or even that the one person is always rude. Was just telling a story, mainly to make them aware of something.


As *Bob* says, the queues prove they're doing something right, and I am a fan of their stuff (not that I get there that often). I will say though, that even if they were rude all the time, I don't think it would suggest that a lot of people are "in to that kind of thing" at all, I truly believe that people will go there regardless.

They have got their business model right. What the queues also show is that they dont have enough competition. An additional high quality Butchers on their patch would soon up their levels of customer service I think.

I have to admit that I have been into WR once with a note from mrs Snorky for some steak or something I dont touch.


It was a bit offhand when I read the requitrement from the note - eye rolling & tutting - the meat was thumped down, wrapped and money demanded with no please or thank you


Obviously this was a sample of 1 trip and Im not likely to hang with me butcher bludz on an evening, so am not really in any position to judge one way or another on the situation


they were very busy though, so its maybe not the best time to draw any conclusion.

So... Whether you think they're rude, cheerful, overpriced or good value: business-wise, they're just about as successful as they could possibly be.

Obviously I'd love it if, when I went to my local butchers, they sprang forward to open the door when I arrived, greeted me like a long-lost friend, enquired as to the health of my silver-haired Mother, shined my shoes and then secretly slipped a tenner into my back pocket whilst opening the door for me on the way out - but - I'm settle instead for some really tasty flesh at honest prices.


If I had to queue up all day for it, I might go elsewhere, but a life of loafing means I can nip down whenever it's quiet. AND.. our favourite butcher is BACK! Ahhhhhh......

I was in William rose today bought some meat and dave the boss gave me tips on preping it,meanwhile 3 other customers entered the store and he greeted them all very warmly,all the others were busy working. The person who initially had the problem should go in and chat to dave,and hopefully you will come to a resolution.

" Is anyone au fait with the Clean Air Act 1993, and  particularly with the state of 'Smoke Control' law and practice generally?  I've just been looking  through some of it for the first time and, afaics, the civil penalties mentioned  were introduced into the Clean Air Act, at Schedule 1A, in May 2022.  So it seems that, in this particular,  it's a matter of the enforcement policy trailing well behind the legislation.  I'm not criticising that at all, but am curious.

    • The solicitor is also the Executor. Big mistake, but my Aunt was very old, and this was the Covid years and shortly after so impossible to intervene and get a couple of close relatives to do this.  She had no children so this is the nephews and nieces. He is a single practitioner, and most at his age would have long since retired - there is a question over his competence Two letters have already gone essentially complaining - batted off and 'amusingly' one put the blame on us. There are five on our side, all speaking to each other, and ideally would work as a single point of contact.  But he has said that this is not allowed - we've all given approval to act on each others behalf. There are five on her late husband's side, who have not engaged with us despite the suggestion to work as a team, There is one other, who get's the lion's share, the typicical 'friend', but we are long since challenging the will. I would like to put another complaint together that he has not used modern collective communication (I expect that he is incapable) which had seriously delayed the execution of the will.   I know many in their 80s very adept with smart phones so that is not an ageist comment. The house has deteriorated very badly, with cold, damp and a serious leak.  PM me if you want to see the dreadful condition that it is now in. I would also question why if the five of us are happy to work together why all of us need to confirm in writing.             The house was lived in until Feb 23, and has been allowed to get like this.
